Strategy is the big picture in warfare, this determines logistics and what troops are where. Teaching strategy or tactics is difficult as they vary from case to case but some overall lessons can be taught such as:
The most important thing to remember in strategy is to keep a supply line to the soldiers open or they will be quickly overwhelmed by the enemy as they have no food or ammunition, in order to do this you have to know here you are fighting in the jungles the few roads will be critical as vehicles are next to useless in the thick forests whereas on the Russian steppe in summer an off roader convey can move quickly without any form of road.
Know your battlefield and look at it before committing to battle, look at a map and decide where the best areas to attack and defend are and then plan accordingly.
Always have a back up plan so that if the enemy foils your main plan you can still fight even if the back up is a plan of how to make an ordered withdrawal from the area.
Know what your enemy can do before you attack many offensives have failed due to poor intelligence.
Never underestimate your enemy and believe they are useless for no reason or rely on things over which you have no control such as a rebellion against the opposing government.

There may be more when I think of it, if any one else would like to post any more strategic good ideas please do.

"TACTICS ARE DEFINED BY TECHNOLOGY"

When you study history you will notice the introduction of various weapons that have somehow changed the course of warfare on the battlefield. The Most often used weapon in all of man's recorded history is the sword. When it first came into being as a weapon on a battlefield over 5000 years ago, it changed the way man killed one another.

As technology progressed, many learned that if he cooperated with other men their chances for success in battle increased. Then they realized if they stood in a certain way; maintaining specific formations, their chances for success grew even more. Formations like the Greek Phalanx and the Swiss pike (16th) century changed the way men fought.

With this said, based on the technology of the mid 19th Century, the basic maneuver element was the regiment. A regiment might use its battalions to fire and maneuver as it advanced on an element, but the Regiment was the basic Maneuver element.

As the machine gun began to dominate the battle fields in WWI and WWII, learning how to overcome its firepower changed tactics again as well as the dominant impact of Field Artillery. In WWI, the presence of Field Artillery was felt the most severe.

With the Advent of the Assault Rifle (German Sturmgewehr), tactics at the company, platoon and squad level changed dramatically. As nations adapted new tactics to address the assault rifle, the squad became the basic maneuver element.

In WWII, a rifle squad was a 10 or 12 man unit built around a Browning Automatic Rifle. Twenty Years later, The rifle squad was an 11 man unit divided into two fire teams with a combination of weapons built right in. One man in a fire team was designated the Auto Rifleman and his job was to put out an increased and sustained rate of fire with the intent of suppressing the enemy. The Riflemen in the squad were there to take careful aimed shots at the enemy to eliminate him. The Grenade Launcher was used to cover dead space; areas not visible to further force the enemy to leave. As each of these weapons was improved on over the next 40 years, so did tactics.

When you plan a military operation, use the following acronym: METT-T

M - Analyze the Mission you are being ordered to perform.
E - Analyze the enemy to determine his capabilities and most probable course of action.
T - Conduct at a minimum a Map reconnaissance to analyze the Terrain the battle will be fought on. If you can physically go out and look at the ground, that is better.
T - Analyze the Troops you have available. Are they sufficient to execute the mission you are being given? Suggest ways of improving their position.
- T - Analyze the Time available. Your soldiers will need more time than you to prepare for the battle. They need time to get their equipment ready, learn their tasks for the mission and rehearse, rehearse, rehearse.

Mission, Enemy, Terrain, Troops - Time Available.

I know this was covered, but it can not be stressed enough.

If you are fighting in clear open terrain like desert and plains, lead with your armor and have Mech Infantry immediately following.

If you come upon small wooded areas and lightly built up areas, lead with your mech Infantry and allow the tanks to provide cover fires when needed.

If combat needs to take place in the woods, mountains or major built up areas, you will want to lead with dismounted or Light Infantry formations. The presence of heavy or armored forces in a support role will help the light formations advance.

Have preplanned indirect fire targets set up ahead of time. This way ,you can either fire a planned fire mission or adjust fire from a known point (Target Reference Point - TRP).

Integrate combined arms whenever possible. Armor, Infantry, Artillery, Engineers, Air Defense Artillery and Close Air Support.
