Caernohabditis elegans is a nematode worm and one of the model organisms used in the study of genetics. I had a research and a paper on them not long ago and they are very fascinating creatures. Long story cut short, they can prolong their own life by 40% with the activation of certain genes. It's their natural thing and it can also be enhanced with genetic manipulation. But essentially they're like 80-year-olds who act and look 40. More and more is discovered about them every day and some of that knowledge is also used in the cosmetics industry - fancy new anti aging cremes and stuff like that, which is a small step forward in prolonging our own life. Of course, my Star Wars oriented mind connected all that with the Sith quest for immortality as soon as I've found those things out. So Yeah, had Anakin knew about C.elegans, dauer and FOXO and daf-gene families; he could have saved Padme's life and wouldn't have gone to the Dark Side... :p
