For the past 3 or so years I've been hearing and see a lot about the advantages and ultimate future of the written word, or more importantly the body which holds our written word. Books.
As the founder and administrator of a TEXT driven website based on the age old art of story telling and roleplaying this both evokes a thoughts of fear, but also unbridled joy. Myself like many of my fellow staff and members at www.aesirstar.com are heavily influenced by the, literature and texts which we have read and ultimately taught through. These books open portals to information refined and born hundreds or even thousands of years ago as well as capable of opening portals to entirely new worlds in the intangible plain of imagination. The Book in my personal opinion is the greatest creation man has ever created, having taken oral traditions of the learned and historical and transporting them to something much more finite... something much more tangible then the whispers that linger off the human mouth for mere seconds.

E-readers both threaten and embrace the ideas of the current generation, the children of the information age' tamers of the internet. By both combining the accessibility, storage capacity and inherent archival nature of the world wide web with the portability, accessibility, and and intuitive payload of electronic text reading and storage devices something familiar and new happens. The love and joy inspired by our old friends hardback and standard print become young again. Suddenly my love of literature and thirst for knowledge can be sated simultaneously. And why stop at one? Download hundreds if not thousands of texts , all in a slim, light weight packaging that only augments not only the human need for knowledge with web driven applets and sites like Wikipedia , but also the human condition for interactivity and ultimately community.

The Era of electronic information has long been underway, but with our old friends the textbook and hardback in new smaller and educationally/(socially) augmented forms...well

things are looking up to live in the 21st century.

I will say, I love the ebook readers. Great idea. Though in truth unless you have multiple ebook readers, if you do cross referencing like in dungeons and dragons (which I tend to do a lot) it's not as good. And besides it's nice to see a great collection of books. But for reading, or studying, or travel and need something to do, the device is great (though I don't have one, I want one). At that Alex Android Ereader is looking awesome.

E readers are rather impressive, though I think it is sad to know that libraries will be phased out eventually. Having a 'hard' copy of a book is something I always took pride in. As with Kyoto, I also find that they are a pain when doing anything that requires having a serious damn arsenal of books at your side (d&d, shadowrun, Dragon Age, etc).

The innovation is wonderful, but where it goes from here is what truly frightens me. For books to become obsolete would truly make me feel a little dead inside.

I agree, Razor.

Though this is cool as fux, I want to smell the scent of old books, and touch slightly crackled pages when I read.

There's just something to me about sitting down with a good book. I personally love the musty smell of books that are more than thirty years old, as well as the new book smell.

Can't see myself sitting down with an e-reader. Too much screen text hurts my eyes.
