Hey, just wondering if anyone else here does MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)?

I started back in late September because I became so into UFC and now I'm getting really good. It's amazing how much I have learned and how much faster, stronger and more flexible I have become! I mean, I have done martial arts before, but this is just so much better.
Right now, i'm training in Muay Thai Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I feel ready for my first amateur fight, but unfortunately I have to be 18, so i'm going to train my ass off for the year so I can be more than ready to take on whoever is put in front of me!

Anyways, just thought i'd share that. Feel free to comment or tell me what you're up to :P

Peace.

MMA is.... a joke I'm sorry to say, (the premise is great but everything basically falls down to muy thai striking and Brazilian jujutsu grappling....its not mixed at all, in fact the ledger to be signed into MMA styled events requires training of some kind in at least thoes two arts if I recall correctly) its basically a giant ad for Brazilian jujitsu.... which is a fucking joke. American arts like JKD and Boxing are effectively eliminated for the sake of rules and fairness..... so no its not mixed. If you really have to get into grappling I'd suggest Akido mind you its a personal suggestion.

That said, I'd been a practitioner of shotokan karate for going on 8 years and boxing on a (very) amateur level for almost a year.

I train at Black Label, it's not the most known place but when I can get around more I plan on training at Team Roughhouse and then at Greg Jackson's as well.

And also, soon they're going to be teaching us a whole lot more, like Boxing, wrestling and adding in some fighter conditioning to make sure we're all ready.

I'd like to add that if you took more interest in the MMA world, then you'd realise that it's very mixed. You get lots of people who train in shotokan karate, judo and kickboxing (although I do know that's very similar to Muay Thai). The reason most train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is because it's the only real martial art that is based on ground work. Also, to become a good mixed martial artist then you need to be good at striking (boxing), kicking (Muay Thai), takedowns/takedown defense (wrestling) and ground grappling/submissions (BJJ). Other styles may aid this and i've seen that it does.

That said, i'm really excited, my first fight will be May 29/30th so i'm going to be training like mad now XD (Not that I wasn't already :P)

I have to fall into agreement with Crossheart here.

Unfortunately, Aikido is almost useless in MMA due to the restrictions on small joint manipulation, or I would partake myself. I do respect Jujutsu, even in it's deviant Brazilian forms; though it seems that most people forget that Jujutsu is a dirty martial art (eye gouges ftw).

My problem with MMA is the restrictions on the styles themselves. Look at how watered down the Muay Thai is, considering you cannot use elbow strikes. I can't even try to picture fighting without integration of wrist + eye/face raking techniques. I know that seems dirty to some, but that is how I was taught to fight.

I still find it funny that you can't get someone in a wrist lock, but you can pin them to the ground with your knees and pummel their face in until the ref literally has to pull you off. Eh.

aikido is litteraly translated as harmonious energy techniques. It is designed to unequip your opponent, use there own energy against them through pressure points, joint locks/grabs and quick striking while generally keeping them and yourself intact.

Steve does rock Aikido, as do I. It is a powerful martial art. I simply said it is almost useless in MMA because it relies heavily on small joint manipulation. That and when combined with jujutsu, you have some brutally efficient templates to build from and combine. I love MMA fighting as a sport, I just wouldn't (couldn't) be a competitor.

Make your nickname your worst move. Old boxing trick I learned from a friend. Fabian 'Right Straight' Perez, and he threw them rarely. Keeps people scared of something that isn't really a threat and makes some nice openings.

I'm gonna try to get into Aikido in a couple of weeks since I'm moving to the morning shift.

So far I've done Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi, Kenpo Karate, Hapkido and 5 animal style Kung Fu (Dragon, Crane, Panther, Tiger, Snake).

Woot, I actually found a Krav Maga school nearby. Hmmmm, gonna check that out.

MMA is very mixed and Im not sure where you get your information from, but you're way off base. If you look at the amount of successful wrestlers in the MMA world then you would know that its not simply a giant ad for BJJ, and there are several successful boxers (Look at Dan Hardy fighting GSP for the Welterweight title) as well as practitioners of other arts (Lyoto Machida is a karate guy and LHW champion). Fedor, perhaps the greatest fighter on the planet, is a Judo/Sambo guy.

And for whoever posted saying Muay Thai elbows are not allowed in MMA, they are.

There are exceptions, there's always exceptions. But you join MMA and that's essentially what they teach you. He's not talking about each fighter. Predominantly, MMA is BJJ and Muy Thai. But also it depends on what you want to do. Fight as a sport? Or learn to defend yourself? MMA and TKD, great if you want to compete. Aikido, Krav Maga.... great for knowing how to defend yourself. It depends on what you want to do. Sure learning MMA, you could defend yourself, but you are shown to fight within rules. Other styles out there how you to fight without rules.

I understand what you mean there Kyoto. I do want to learn more to compete rather than to defend myself, although it can come in handy. But my teacher also tells us things we could do from each position if we were defending ourselves.

And just to add, it's not hard to learn things that you can do defending yourself on the streets as apposed to a cage/ring lol.

A lot of the issue is that when people learn martial arts, they learn the movements. The one thing they need to learn is how to actually apply it. In Hapkido, I applied what I learned and adjusted the techs so it did the same thing just in a different way that can benefit from my large size. Majority of the martial artists don't do that. They are taught to kick, they kick.

You can take anything you learn martial arts and apply it to self defense. Just some aren't able to see it.
