I am tired of hearing that Final Fantasy VII qualifies as the best rpg ever, or even one of the best. That is like saying Phantasy Star IV was better than II.

Final Fantasy VII had good gameplay, but that was it. The storyline was so convoluted that it hurt, and the lack of focus drove me to the brink of insanity. I know, fanboys will cry, but the truth is the truth. VII is far from the best rpg ever, and was not any better (imo) than FFVI. In fact, the characters were more believable in VI.

FFVII featured an amnisiac anti-hero for a main character (double cliche), who thought he was a clone of some alien bimbo who is poisoning a whole planet by being on it. Come to find out, he isnt, and then he finds the real clones (who ironically are all retards). However, there is that special clone, and he was all shiny and whatnot.

Materia- one of the best systems in FF, second only to the Jobs system.

Summons- 7 had some of the best summons in an FF game ever, next to 9 (considering 9 gave them a bit more of a purpose and effect).

Control scheme and interface- For it's time, fantastic.

Everything else- sub par. It played well, but if you pay attention, the game itself is a good mechanical system over cardboard cutout garbage.

Though I am sure this will become a flame fest, I just cant stand to hear it anymore. There are still good rpgs out there that have a story AND good gameplay, but they are underappreciated.

Also, Advent Children was the prettiest flying turd I have ever seen. Flying? Cloud beating Sephiroth alone??? Three clones that were magically overlooked amidst the pools of retards?????

lol. I do invite people to discuss this if you wish, but please keep the flaming down for obvious reasons. Opinions are opinions and I play rpgs for a comprehensive and gripping story. I have never laughed harder at 'serious' moments than I did when playing FFVII...wait...nvm...there was FFVIII.

I'm not into flaming.... well don't particularly want to flame right now anyway lol.

FF7 to me had a great indepth story. The twists in it was good and the characters were loved or hated (at least most of them). Yes cloud's emo-ness got a little old and even though that cleared by the end it carried over into the movie but that's who he is (how would you act if you found most of your life was a lie). The supporting case also moved the story along (at least Tifa, Barret and Aerith did) while each had their own story.Yeah Sephiroth though a cool bad guy lacked the indepth-ness the other characters had and Shinra kinda took the spotlight from him.

So yes story had flaws, but in truth it was one of the few rpgs that kept me interested the whole way through. To keep me interested in an rpg I need to love the characters. I need to grow attached to them and 7 was one of the few rpgs that got me to do that.

Materia system yes is awesome, though broken lol. But the diversity in how you build your characters is sweet. But yes job system is better as there's more diversity.

Summoning I thought was cool but not the greatest. I kinda reserve that currently to FFX and XII.

FFVII may not have the best story overall and maybe a bit cliche but the characters kept me interested more so than any of the others.

Final Fantasy VII is not only one of the best, but THE best rpg ever. Doubting me is like saying that Phantasy Star II is better than Phantasy Star IV.

I don't think any game can be considered the best, but for me...FFVII was my best.

I concur with you on that Reno, as no game can ever truly be 'The best game ever' considering the different genres and communities that gaming is supposed to speak to.

Also, Snow, if you would like to provide some input that would be nice. I was asking for a discussion.

If either of you would like to post 'what' and you liked about the game and 'why' you liked it, I would appreciate it. Everyone always says 'ZOMG BEST GAME EVAR' but nobody can say why. Please refrain from these too->

'Best story'
'Best characters'
'Best etc'

Just give a legit reason. Explain yourselves, because that is how people can truly debate things.

FFVII is the best because I said so, and my say-so is a legitimate way of debating things.

(lolol I haven't even played it)

In comparison to the age and type of video games when Final Fantasy VII came out, yes, it could be labeled the best game as far as innovation. There hasn't been a game since that has made such a leap and dominated the markets based on ingenuity.

And the storyline is pretty good too.

It is the best game ever because it had good characters. I like good characters and good storylines, and this, the best game ever, had them both.

And this is why discussions on the internet fail sometimes.

Good characters is a horribly loose concept.

As well, good characters should not be walking cliches. Combining cliches can sometimes be pulled off, but it has to be done just right. I only felt there were two characters that really spoke to me in FFVII: Cid and Tifa.

Cid was due to his complete lack of confidence, which took most of the story for him to overcome. As well, he was one of the few who I truly felt bad for after they explained his back story.

Tifa was also a character I could relate to, but only because of her 'love comes second' attitude when there was the world at stake. It was nice to not see her tripping over cloud every hour (like most females in jRPGs), and it was also nice that they combined the 'broken hearted damsel, with the 'bad ass chick' cliches and melded them together well.

The main cast, however, was rather lacking imo. For a game that was built to be taken seriously, most of the cast felt like an out of place joke. It was nearly as awkward an experience for me as Legend of Dragoon (the only game that honestly made me cry due to it's epic failings upon hitting disc 2 and beyond).

Ummmm....

Shenmue

The game recreated the concept of RPGs. In my opinion, Shenmue was the best rpg ever made. One of the innovators (and most brutal implementers) of Q.T.E. A full, spoken, dialogue tree with thousands of NPCs. Day/night cycles, etc.

Shenmue was much more innovative and original than FFVII. I know, most of you will disagree, but I bought the game the day it came out on DreamCast. I have beaten every FF game to date (shy of FFXI and FFX-2...I refuse to play them). They cannot touch this game, nor it's sequel.
