For the National Novel Writing month I am going to be working on my novel. The challenge is to write 50,000 words in 30 days. I'm nearing 2,000 on day 1 so if I keep this up I'll be good.

Also as some people may be interested I'll be posting up chapters on this thread. When I finish the first draft of a chapter, I'll post it for your view. Constructive criticism is always welcome as I have to write with the audience in mind. Though this is the first draft so things will certainly change. Also many of you may know the characters in this story. The main character being Kyoto Kitsune. Tasuda will be in it as well as Maruji. Kashira may though right now I don't have a place for him though once I get to a point I may be able to fit him in just fine. And our favorite villain Pico will be in it though under another name. His actions will certainly speak for himself.

Synopsis so you have the basic gist of the story

From the ashes of a war, a world was born to be the paradise for the children of the Goddess Alesia. But the peace is threatened when an ancient evil breaks free of his prison and begins his rampage of destruction. Only an ancient hero who died thousands of years before can rise up to defend them and bring peace to the world built on chaos and destruction.

A young boy named Kyoto destined to lead the Temple of Kitsune, a well known temple who have produced many of histories greatest heroes is thrown into chaos as his family was murdered in the most vile manner. Exiled, he hunts down the one responsible only to be lead into something bigger and more dangerous then he could ever imagine. Will a mere boy be able to cope with what his true destiny is?

Chapter 1
Kyoto

The city center was bustling with trade and people setting up for the millennium celebration. Children already ran around waving sparklers around filling the area with the smell of sulfur. Merchants trading clothing for the celebration which consisted of a long white robe with silver lining and a blue design of seedling blooming. The colors were significant as the Goddess wore white when she helped the first of their race create the city they were now in and the silver signifying the blades the angels used to defend them against the evils of the world. The seedling signified the birth and the growth of all living things. These were sold to those who weren't members of temples. The temples wore robes that was usually very extravagant and very heavy. Design usually had the symbol of the temple and in their language the book of Alesia was written in black letters or white if the robes were black. The message was their vow they recited daily. It was a vow to protect all life, though in many more words.

The day was heating rapidly as the beginning of summer had struck. Near the endless sea, the heat was more intense then most of the other cities.

A young boy set a plank of Arapl wood down. Though he was only twelve, he was considered a young adult and therefore capable of doing manual work. A tattoo of a fox was imprinted around his right eye signifying that he belonged to the Kitsune temple. A temple that were used as scouts in battles. Though battle hasn't been seen in fifty years with the exception of a few bandit raids in the smaller villages. His temple was only used to track down the bandits, then the rest of the temples and soldiers would go in to end them.

Though the temple were used for scouting, they were one of the largest temples and were used for special missions during the days where battle was a daily occurrence. The Kitsune family were powerful and well respected. One of the grandmasters was known to have single handedly stop a small force of thirty. This was common when the forces were smaller. A monk from a temple could generally hold his own against a dozen soldiers. Though they were trained to do that now, they were trained mostly to work as a team.

The boy was a direct descendant of that grandmaster and the heir to the temple when he proves himself. But that was still twenty years out. Though most suspect he'd be ready in fifteen, some say ten. His father Judai, the current grandmaster of the temple trained him while everyone else was resting.

“Kyoto,” shouted one of the older students. “Can you grab that plank and bring it over here? We have to finish the stairs.”

Nodding, Kyoto picked up the plank, sweat beading down his bald head. The bald head allowed the energy to flow easily through the warriors, allowing them to last longer in fights and strenuous activities. Plus it kept them cool. Kyoto delivered the plank and helped hammer the nails down.

The stage would be used for the matches between the temples. This would be Kyoto's first year to participate. Only students are allowed to participate, and in their society, you had to train in the temple till age eleven. This was a test to see if the student would benefit from the temple, or if another temple would do better as each temple had their own specialties. At age twelve, they would become a student and gain their tattoo showing they belonged to that temple and if that temple were to fall and you are still alive, you would be banished from the temple world. You would be shunned by the society as you did not die to protect it.

Kyoto always thought this was harsh but there were reasons. Entire family lines relied on the survival of the school. You were tied to that family once you became a student. The temple adopted you. Your last name became the name of the temple. As you were tied to that school, and each profession in the Marcian culture had their own tattoo, there was nothing left for you. Temples had fallen before, but only a few had ever been exiled. And though the Kitsune family line was one of the strongest, they did have a dark period when one of the descendants was exiled because he left the temple.

After the stage was finished Kyoto and his peers headed back to the temple. There they would have a final meal, clean up and get ready for the celebration. This was a big one. A thousand years since the creation of their race. The Rovarians wouldn't be celebrating today as they were created three hundred years after the Elvasians, Kalmarin, and the Marcians.

The early dinner was simple. Rice that was made thick to fill quicker for portions control, vegetables that was pulled from the garden which consisted of tomatoes, carrots and green beans. Then to finish it off, they had fish which was called a Rock fish as they tended to hang around the cliff face and blend into the rocks. These were the easiest fish to catch though taste wasn't great. Fishermen would put rocks in a net and lower it into the water. When it would hit the floor it'd open up and the small rock fish would enter around the rocks. The fishermen would leave the net there for several hours and when they brought the net up they would generally have a dozen rock fish. There were fifty pulleys that did this. So by the end of the day, they would get a couple hundred of these fish. This was only to augment their real catch which were sword fish that was rightly named for the long pointed nose. These were a bear to catch but they sold pretty well. Crab was another favorite one to catch as though they were dangerous, they were easy to catch.

After dinner, the large pool beyond the garden was used to wash up. A dozen students could wash up at the same time. The females and males washed a separate times allowing each gender to have their privacy though sexual inclinations were usually frowned upon except to provide heirs. That didn't stop the raging hormones of the younger boys though.

Throwing on his shirt, Kyoto pulled his celebration robes out from the chest near his bed. It was brand new, his father had just gotten him a new one a month ago. It was slightly different then the other students robes to signify being a direct heir. On his should were yellow stripes. Each stripe was what generation he was in his line. The robe was green with black trim which were the colors of the school. This also meant that he was a scout, or at least that was the job of the temple. The fox design on the back was threaded with a gold thread.

The lettering on the robe was threaded with silver in the language of the celestials. Only the three main races knew the language as it was taught to them at a young age.

Peace is but a point in which we prepare. Evil is ever constant in this world. The training of our minds, bodies and spirits help us combat this evil on a daily basis. As a warrior of Alesia, we swear our devotion to the protection of the innocent and the unable. We will fight till we can't fight no more then push past our physical barriers to fight longer. We will not rest till evil is finally vanquished and death is no longer the end. This world, this plane, this realm is ours to protect and protect it we will with the last of our breath. Our devotion is to our creator the Goddess Alesia as she birthed us and mothered us. We follow her wisdom as even if we don't understand, she has her reasons. For this I swear.

The vow was said once a year at new years to renew our oath and remind us why we train. This vow drove the temples. They all had the same vow. Putting on the robe, he tied the strings on the inside down to the waist then over lapped it and tied the outside again down to the waist. This allowed for easier movement during the matches as they had to fight with the robes on.

A young girl ran in jumping up and down as she got a new robe as well. She had the same tattoo showing she was from the same temple and the bald head so the energy flow wouldn't have any obstacles. “Kyoto! I'm excited! We are now considered students. I am happy!”

“Now our real training starts. We can progress among the ranks and prove how good we are.” She was named Sugao, the twin sister of Kyoto. She was born only minutes after Kyoto. It was rare to have a successful birth with twins. Many considered them to be blessed. It was also rare to have siblings who got along as well as they do.

“Five years and we'll be ready to become heirs of the temple!” Sugao was among the best fighters, though like Kyoto she tended to be arrogant.

“Then I will take that bet.” Their mother walked into the room smiling. She wasn't a fighter. She was born in a merchant family and had been married off to their father Judai when their family went broke. Kyoto's grandparents took them in and gave them jobs around the temple. Though when they left to travel to the capital city of Alesia which was the home to the elvesians, a group of Ranvian bandits attacked and killed them both. That happened only a few years ago and the children remembered how much their mother was affected by it.

Kyoto slipped his shoes on and ran the lace up his leg crossing them over one another then tied it. This kept his pant legs tied so he doesn't trip over them. Standing up he mother smiled. She was proud that her children are finally students.

I like the idea behind the story. It seems like a pretty exciting and epic one. Just a few pointers on the story...

The first thing I noticed is that your writing is very clunky. You don't use many 'ands' or commas, and pretty much everything that could be a comma is a new sentence. This makes it kind of difficult to read.

In addition, you sometimes get confused with tenses and plurals:
Quote:

The temples wore robes that was usually very extravagant and very heavy

I think the was here should be a were, since you're using robes as a plural. And I'm not sure about temple being in there, but that just seems like a typo.

Other than that it looked pretty interesting. Starts off kind of like Raymond E. Feist's 'Magician'. I'd like to see it when the ancient evil comes into play.

yeah Feist is my inspiration as he's my favorite author. I've been catching up on his series. As a matter of fact, I'm reading book 2 in the dark war saga now to get my creative juices flowing.

Chapter 2
Vile

The smell of sulfur filled the air as the fire works were launched. The ceremonial dragon wound through the crowd spitting fire as it danced along. Children watched in glee as the largest festival of the millenia was under way. The Kaze temple followed the dragon displaying their aerial moves. Their robes shinning brilliantly in the fire light. Many gazed in awe as they used their power over air pressure to do amazing feats.

Those not from Tai Jir or familiar with the temples stood amazed at what even the mere students could do. The Elvesians had their magic, the Kalmirin had their beauty, but what the Marcians could do was amazing. There performance brought many to tears as they watched the incredible performances.

The second temple was the Chiyu who were known to be the best healers in the land. They had a couple of the new students drop seeds and behind them the reset were quickly growing sturdy plants that held up their weight four feet off the ground. They walked on the massive leaves and as the grandmaster walked behind the plants retreated back to the seeds to grow naturally.

Several of the other temples went through displaying equally as impressive stunts and techniques. The final temple was the Kitsune temple. The senior students began to vanish as they walked through the crowd displaying their ability to use their own energy to create a mirror like effect to cloak themselves. The audience found gifts in their hands before they realized what had happened. Little fox toy that was soft with artificial fur and adorable. Kyoto's mother and many of the students and wives created them.

As heirs to the temple, Kyoto and his sister Sugao walked between their parents. The crowd revered Judai for his over abundance of help over the years. He had ended many gangs that ravaged the lands. For this those in those lands were excited to see him. Many flowers were thrown at the family. Many revered Kyoto's mother Miyu for her support in helping families through tough times. The Kitsune temple was highly charitable as it gave away their excess funds to families in need.

Kyoto and Sugao watched in awe as the dancers danced upon the stage telling the story of the creation of their world. A young actress known as Kumiko of Fujimoto played the role of Alesia. Many regarded her as the goddess of acting so this role was fitting.

The play ended in an uproar of cheers and claps. Flowers were thrown onto the stage and many professed their love to Kumiko who only blushed before departing off the stage.

The next part of the festival began with a speech from the emperor of Tai Jir, Norifusa Kamei. The speech was lengthy but after awhile the speech ended. Kyoto only recalled a few parts of it. He remembered the story of the first battle that he was in and the story of when the city was founded and when they named him their leader. Beyond that he said thanks to the different temples and the original founders then beyond that he was lost.

The final event was upon them. Three fighters from each temple would face off. The winner would receive the trophy for the years best temple and this year was extra special as those who won would go to Alesia with the emperor to meat Tanis, emperor of Alesia and Queen Ayaba of the Kalamrin.

Both Sugao and Kyoto were chosen as they were the heirs of Kitsune along with one of the elder students who was only a year away from graduating and becoming a full fledged scout. The other schools chose their participants and the matches were under way.

They were single elimination. Each student was faced against another and if you faced a student of your temple you both would move on as a team. The matches were empty hand fighting. A circle had been painted on the stage and a judge verified if any fighter stepped out of the circle as that would be an immediate loss. The only other ways of winning was knocking your opponent out or making him surrender which in this society was rarely done and if it was it meant they were no longer part of the temple the next day or if they were an heir, they would be punished. So surrendering was not an option.

The first fight was underway. And after a minute it was over with Kaze winning the match. The next two matches were completed bringing Kyoto next in line against the Mizu temple. His opponent's name was Kashima, one of the senior fighters of the temple. Though he had experience, Kyoto didn't fear him. He was excited to finally show how much he had learned the last seven years.

After the gong sounded Kashima attacked immediately. Stepping in with his right leg between the legs of Kyoto and sending an open palm to Kyoto's chest. Though this was a basic technique to throw the opponent off balance. His training in the soft art Gan Baru prepared him. His leg swung around behind Kashima's leg and grabbing he hand that would strike him, he twisted the wrist launching Kashima a few feet before colliding to the ground.

Standing back, he allowed the young man get up who seemed perplexed as even heirs usually weren't able to do that. Heirs were usually taught basic techniques and were usually slow. Throws were taught though being able to grab a strike was difficult and usually required excellent reflexes and coordination.

The next attack came, though the boy was smarter this time. He wasn't going to underestimate a child who knew advanced techniques. He used his school's style which flowed like water as their temple's name suggested. The next attack was feigned though Kyoto didn't go for it, instead he waited for the next attack which came with a knee towards his groin while at the same time an elbow to the throat. Shifting his stance and bringing up his left hand the knee slid harmlessly off his thigh as the elbow struck Kyoto's wrist softening and stopping the blow.

Kyoto had watched countless times the training of the other schools and adapted a lot of what he saw into his own style which proved to be more versatile then the other styles. His left arm twisted so he could grip the elbow of his opponent while his hand shot up and gripped his wrist. Twisting it he had control over what Kashima could do. Positioning to the end of the ring, he let go as he jumped up and struck his knee to the boy's chin sending him sprawling back and eventually falling off the stage.

Many applauded that a beginner student could do so much. Usually a beginner student who was the heir would be equivalent to a mid level student, not an advanced student. Kyoto was announced the winner and the fights were under way. Sugao and the Advanced student on their team named Toyama dispatching their opponents just as easily.

The rest of the fights that night had ended with Kitsune not losing a single fight. The three of them would travel with the emperor to Alesia in a week's time to meet with the other leaders and supposedly Alesia herself.

Kyoto ran up to his father. “A few of us are going to go to a feast at city hall.”

His father nodded. “Ok but don't stay out too late as we have more training tomorrow.”

Kyoto nodded and was about to invite Sugao but a big yawn let him know she was exhausted with the night. With that he ran off with a couple of the other Kitsune students one being Toyama.

The feast was massive and the Kitsune students had their fill of food and a couple of wine. Those who were able anyway. Kyoto was exhausted as the day's events and the food drained him. The lights were out at the temple meaning everyone as already in bed.

The door slid open quietly as they carefully stepped into the main hall so they don't make the hardwood floor of the temple squeak. Kyoto's footing was lost as he hit a puddle of liquid. His foot slid forward forcing him to do splits as his hand came down to catch him. The others suppressed their chuckles.

Kyoto could feel the wetness on his hands as they rested in the puddle. “This should really get cleaned up.”

A voice in the dark caught their attention. “Yes it should.”

A light was lit which revealed a man maybe in his thirties with markings all over his face and head. Markings none of them recognized. He had a grin that suggested malice and dark robes were draped over him. Kyoto looked down and saw a red liquid. After a moment he realized he was in blood. Quickly getting up he looked around the now lit room. Then at his companions who stood their frozen in fear, color drained from their skin.

Kyoto followed where they were looking and behind the man staked to the wall were his mother and father. Both nude and split open with their intestines spilled out and wrapped around the man. Kyoto felt nausiated as he looked at them. Limbs laid in the hallway removed from their bodies. He wasn't sure who they belonged to.

Scuffling brought his attention to a corner where Aya was slowly moving, her body naked and blood covering her. She was out of it. Her eyes vacant. Her mind was gone but her body remained moving on it's own.

“She was a nice lay. A virgin, very tight.” The man grinned as he sat their watching the boys witness horror before them.

She was only eleven. A month away from being named officially a student. One of the boys lost his stomach contents as he hurled his feast to the floor. Kyoto and everyone else were in shock at what they saw. Then realization he didn't see his sister. Everyone else was dead, she had to be dead.

Kyoto's anger boiled over as he snapped to. “Who are you? Why would you do this?” Tears streamed down his face as he screamed out.

The man laughed. “Who am I? Well I am Tano Slau and I do this because I enjoy it. Nothing personal, just pleasure.”

Kyoto's fists tightened as he launched himself at Tano. Toyama reached forth but missed Kyoto. Kyoto jumped at the man as he threw a right punch but where the man stood Aya sat. Kyoto's momentum couldn't be stopped as he plowed into her sprawling on the floor.

Aya moved to him, her vacant brown eyes looking at him. “Kyoto,” she whispered. “Come be with me.”

Kyoto sat frozen as she reached up and locked lips with him. Kyoto could taste the blood she was covered in.

Pushing her away he said, “Aya, snap out of it. We have to get out of here.”

“I want to be with you Kyoto. Sleep with me.” Her hand reached down to his groin and began massaging it.

Kyoto pushed away and stood up. “Aya! Wake up! This isn't you!” He looked up at the other boys with him who were struggling as more of the students had appeared holding them. They fought but the students who held them were too strong. A couple of the older female students moved over to them seducing them.

Feeling a tug on his pants, Kyoto looked down to see Aya looking up at him with a smile on her face. Kyoto pushed her away realizing she wasn't in her right mind. Moving around he rushed over to help the others who were losing the struggle.

“This is interesting Kyoto.” Kyoto turned and saw Tano sitting on a chair that looked to be made of limbs from the victims. “A boy who's passed his own grief to try and save those left alive. I'm impressed.”

Kyoto's anger, fear, and grief were held in check only by sheer will. He knew he had to at least escape with those left. Even if it did mean exile. Ignoring Tano, he pulled one of the girls off Toyama.

“You don't even want to talk.” Tano grinned as he vanished from his spot and appeared next to the girl Kyoto and pulled off of Toyama. “Apparently she's useless.”

Turning he found Tano caressing the girl's breast while looking at Kyoto. “Get your hands off of her!” Kyoto moved to attack. A glint of steel showed a hidden blade slide across the young girl's throat as blood poured from the cut arteries.

Kyoto knew she was dead and there would be plenty of time after to grieve his family and friend's death. He lunged at Tano to only again hit air. Stumbling over, he felt a body land on him. Aya once again laid on him. She moved up and fought against Kyoto's resistence. A blade came down through Aya's head and stopped mere inches from his face. Looking up he saw Tano standing there.

“Yeah I agree, no breasts, definitely no sex appeal.” Tano grinned as he walked over to the others.

Kyoto's eyes were wide as he looked at the dead body that was once Aya. Tears flowed freely as helplessness took over. Fear gripped him, he couldn't move, he could hardly breath. Blood dripped on his face with out a flinch from him. Shocked to see a friend murdered before his eyes.

“Kyoto! Get up! Get ou-”. The voice from Toyama was cut off.

As Kyoto looked over, the senior student was slouched over the shoulder of their murderer looking at him, mouthing the word “run”. But he couldn't, he was frozen in fear and duty. He had to fight to the death but the murderer wouldn't kill him, he was toying with him.

The other boy that was with them broke free of the hold and sent a kick at Tano who easily side stepped him. With his sword, he slashed at the boy's neck removing the head creating a fountain of blood before the body struck the ground. Kyoto was the only one left aside those who were no longer in their right mind.

Scurrying out from under the body he stood up slipping on the blood but once he got his balance he darted down the hall into the central courtyard. There was a maniacal laugh from the killer behind him. Not bothering opening the wood and paper doors, he broke through them and then through the wall that led to the outside.

Behind the temple was the rest of the city. He ran down the city streets panting, fear the only thing keeping him going. The sound of Tano's laugh still in his mind. He knew people had to be out still as the feast was going strong. He quickly turned down and alley and stopped, a dark figure with glowing red eyes and teeth that glistened unnaturally that grinned at him. Stumbling back he continued down the main street towards city hall.

Reaching the stairs to the open doors he called out, “help-” but he was interrupted as a shadow flew by gripping him. He looked down and saw someone out there to see who had called for help. He tried to call out but he couldn't force his voice out. The shadow carried him towards the cliff.

“You are no longer fun Kyoto. A shame. You had great potential. But now I must end you,” said the voice from the shadow.

His grip loosened and he fell. He struck the edge of the cliff that the pulleys were on and bounced off over.

Chapter 3
Exile

The town magistrate stepped out of the temple. His face was green as he tried to hold in his vomit. He didn't want to show weakness to the crowd that gathered around the temple. Though it was useless as his staff ran from the building throwing up their breakfast. The emperor walked out just shaking his head.

“What happened,” the master of the Kaze temple asked.

The magistrate was unable to speak so placing his hand on the man's shoulder the Emperor stepped forth. “There was an attack on this temple. The Kitsune line has ended and everyone including the students.”

Someone in the back screamed. The crowd opened up a path, some in shock as the site, others whispering to one another as Kyoto limped down the open space. His head was bleeding from a gash, his right arm cradling his ribs as they appeared to possibly be broken.

Kashima ran forward and allowed Kyoto to put his weight on him. Bringing him forth the Emperor walked over.

“Get this boy some water, and get the master from Chiyu. This boy needs help.” The Emperor looked down at him. “He's badly injured magistrate. He needs to rest before you ask him any questions.”

The magistrate nodded, “understandable. Besides I can't concentrate with what I saw in there. I need to pull myself together.”

“What ever happened there wasn't cause by even a demon. No one is that twisted. Pray to alesia that whatever caused that doesn't return.” The emperor picked Kyoto up and placed him on the cushion of the carrier. “Take him to the Chiyu and make sure he's looked after. Get guard on him.”

The carrier lifted and hurried off. The Magistrate looked at the Emperor. “He may have survived but the Kitsune family and temple is done. Not one is left to pass on their secrets.”

“I realize that. But maybe they have records. Get the place cleaned up, burn the bodies and get the general and his men to search the temple for any documents on the techniques. We'll have to hand it off to one of the others.” The Emperor turned and left the area heading back to the tower the housed the royalty.

The young healer of Chiyu wiped the wet cloth across Kyoto's face clearing the blood. The master had applied an ointment to his cuts and bruises which stopped the bleeding. Now Hitomi was cleaning off the blood and the sweat from his fever dream. His ribs were found broken as well as his ankle. Both were now reset and bound. She had admiration for this boy as he just gritted his teeth and held in the pain. Now he rested though a constant nightmare was plaguing him.

The mistress of Chiyu, Kasumi, walked in with a bowl of soup that was made to break fevers. “How's he doing?”

“He's constantly shaking, rapid eye movement, some murmurs. Whatever happened wasn't something someone so young should go through. We all know the Kitsune Temple. Kyoto was strong for his age. A mere raid or assassination would cause fear like this. And whatever the Magistrate saw was horrible as I've never seen him so ashen faced before. I feel sorry for him.” Hitomi wiped the new sweat from his forehead.

“And whoever did that ruined him. He was tied to that house and now has no home.” Kasumi showed sign of pity and regret but with the mark of the Kitsune, no one could take him in. He would have to find a new home and try to build a new life though the Kitsune name would be forever scarred. Most left the city and never return.

Kyoto sat up screaming, eye wide with terror. Once he came too he gripped his chest and doubled over in excruciating pain. Hitomi rubbed his head whispering “it's ok, you're same” repeatedly. Kyoto laid their tears streaming and wimpering. Not from pain from his wounds, but pain from loss. The thought of his sister, mother, father, Aya who looked into his eyes, and Toyama who was one of the best fighters who looked into his eyes as he died. Too many deaths, and now he had no one, no one to go home to. Now he would be alone.

Kasumi set the soup down. “He needs to eat this. And once his fever is broken we need to get him moving. Otherwise he won't be fit to travel. The Emperor is still going to bring him to Alesia. One so young shouldn't be left alone, so he's going to try and find him something to do there.”

Three days had passed, Kyoto laid in bed spaced out looking at the ceiling the shock of what he saw still racing through his mind. The fever had left shortly after eating the soup as they had said it would. Not like he doubted the capabilities of the Chiyu temple. It was still hard to breath with the broken ribs and walking was painful with his ankle the way it was. Hitomi forced him out of bed twice a day for at least a half an hour and he knew any minute she'd be in here to do it again. It was only reaching mid day and so there would be another point towards the evening she would be here to take him out of bed.

As if on cue, Hitomi slid the door open and walked in. Moving to crab the crutches she said, “come Kyoto, time to take a walk. You need the air.”

Kyoto looked at her, “Isn't it better to have someone lay in bed with broken ribs and ankle?”

She pulled the covers back and said, “normally, but you have to keep your strength as you will be leaving in a few days for Alesia. We'd normally keep you here of a couple of months. But by order of the Emperor, you must be ready to travel. Though travel will be easy as you'll be in a carrier and not a wagon. So you'll have plenty of time to rest.”

He sighed and winced as he pushed himself up into a seated position at the edge of the bed. Grabbing the crutches, he placed each one under an arm and with the help of Hitomi, he was standing. The walk was through the courtyard which was decorated with some of the most vibrant flowers in Tai Jir. Most though were used for treating illnesses and injuries. Others were poisonous but were used to counter stronger less treatable poisons.

“So, is everyone dead?” Kyoto watched the flow of water from the fountain they had in the center.

“So far as they can tell. Most weren't recognizable.” She paused a moment understanding his pain though not knowing how it must feel. “I'm sorry Kyoto, I wish there was something I could do.”

Kyoto watched the reflection of himself. It was disfigured with the bruises and cuts. He didn't even recognize himself. “Not much anyone could do against the mad man. But once I get better I will hunt him down for this.”

“Seek guidance,” Hitomi said. She watched him as she could sense mixed feeling of anger, sadness, and fear in him. “I am sure if you spoke with one of the angels, they would stop him for you. You nearly lost your life last time.”

Kyoto's frustration was getting the better of him. Just that night he had proven he was better then most advanced students and yet he didn't lay a single finger on that man. The thought of him actually failing his family and friends and as the weakling, being the only one alive angered him. “I rightfully shouldn't be alive. But as I am, I must do this on my own.”

The end of the week came and the trip to Alesia was under way. He had his own carrier which was a much more enjoyable ride then a wagon or carriage would've been. Those who carried it were well trained and knew how to move to keep the carrier from bouncing. The Emperor rode a horse beside the carrier and when they set up camp, Kyoto rested in the Emperor's tent on a soft bed made of various soft linen and feathers.

The journey itself was easy and uneventful, though he knew he would never be returning to Tai Jir. His home was no more, and those he knew were lost forever.

Chapter 4
Alesia

The towers were the first thing Kyoto had seen. The six towers that held the Emperor Tanis and the five senators. They were still a full days ride, but as they peaked the hill, they realized why during the battle against the Ranvians it wasn't taken over. At the time there were no walls, but the enemy could be seen a whole day in advanced. It was a wide open space that funneled into the inlet of the mountains. You were forced to fight head on. In the morning sunlight, the white marble buildings shinned brilliantly as if they were nearing heaven itself. It was a magnificent sight, one that made one stare at it in wonder.

The massive gates were open inviting any who seeked to enter. People of all races walked the streets going to their destinations. This was a city of academics and art. All along the sides of the street etched into the ground was writing in the celestial language. From what Kyoto heard, it told the history of their Goddess and the people of Alesia.

They moved through the massive streets passing various shops, inns, taverns, schools, and homes. The trek to the main tower was long. The city was massive. Kyoto couldn't help but to look around in amazement as the mages and clerics in their ornate robes walked to their destinations.

His eyes caught something he had never seen before. An Angel stood speaking and teaching to children in a small park. His elegance was almost blinding like he was giving off his own light. His massive feathered wings folded behind him.

The angel was smiling as he looked up. Then his smile faded as he locked eyes with Kyoto. A look of disbelief was etched on his face. Kyoto's smile had faded as well as the look was eerie and deep down the angel to him looked almost familiar.

Quickly turning to the emperor he asked, “Who was that angel?”

The Emperor looked over and nodded to the angel. “That would be Kormal. Teacher of the clerics. Those kids are to become clerics and pass on the teachings as well as provide healing to those who fight to protect or contract diseases. Why do you ask?”

Kyoto sat back thinking his words betraying his true thought, “just curious. Never seen an angel before.”

The emperor watched him but said nothing. They just continued on to the tower. It took an hour to get to their location and the sun was setting. They were given accommodations in the emperors tower as well as food and a bath.

A knock came on Kyoto's door after the bath. “Come in,” he said.

The door opened revealing a Cleric. “I was informed you had some injuries that needed to be treated.”

Kyoto nodded, “Yeah, I have broken ribs, a broken ankle. The bruises are just about gone and the cuts have healed though are tender.”

The Cleric entered and closed the door. He had a bag that Kyoto assumed had equipment in it. “How may I ask did one so young get so many injuries?”

Kyoto looked down at the bandages and splint on his foot thinking back at that night. He wasn't even sure it actually happened anymore. It was so unbelievable, it felt more like a dream. But he wouldn't be in this shape if it didn't happen.

“My temple was attacked and I was almost killed with the rest of my friends and family.” Kyoto's grief still lingered but he tried to suppress it. Though at times he simply couldn't.

The cleric paused a moment looking at the boy. “You must be strong to have survived that ordeal. I recognize your tattoo. Part of the Kitsune temple.”

“My father was the Grandmaster of the temple,” said Kyoto.

“Judai Kitsune. I had the pleasure of meeting him when he was just a child. His father served in the Ranvian War. I know your family's strength well. I see it in you. And who ever could destroy you temple wasn't just anyone. Alesia must have plans for you.” The Cleric pulled out new bandages and splint as Kyoto's were wet from the bath.

“If she saved me from falling off the cliff then why didn't she or any of her angels step in to stop Tano?” The thought of Alesia sparing him and not Aya angered him.

“Tell me young Kitsune. How did you survive the fall off the cliff?” The cleric removed a knife and cut the bandages.

“I was being carried by Tano and then dropped over the eastern cliffs. The only thing I remember was hitting the ground first before going over.” He paused a moment. “When I awoke, I was on a ledge which I guess is lucky as it's the only ledge.”

“Do you count it luck? Or do you count it fate? With what I've seen, things happen for a reason whether or not Alesia had a hand in it.” The cleric began wrapping Kyoto's chest.

Kyoto didn't really have an answer to that. “I just don't believe that me out of anyone else was spared. Why me? I'm no one special. Why couldn't Aya have been saved? Or my sister? I watched Aya die. I was frightened. I couldn't do anything. I wanted to, but I froze. Why couldn't my life have been traded for someone elses?”

“Maybe that's why you were spared? Your willingness to sacrifice yourself for others. Your desire to protect others. That is a desirable trait. And sometimes you must know loss before you can appreciate what protecting others is about. One who protects and never fails tend to be more laxed. One who has failed and hates himself for it is one who will try harder and never relax. You are a protector. And you are a true protector as you've had your life yanked from you.” He tied the bandage and signaled for Kyoto to life his foot.

“If I recall,” he continued, “the way the Marcian society works is that if you lose your temple, you become an exile.”

Kyoto nodded, “yes, because of our tattoos. They signify which house or temple we belong to. I had mine since five years of age as I am the heir of Kitsune. But now unless I find a way to rebuild, I'm done. Though rebuilding isn't an option as the name Kitsune is cursed. It's scarred for life. No one wants their child to be in a temple who was wiped out just a few years previously. That kind of thing sticks.”

The cleric removed the splint and bandages from his foot. “Then what is it are you going to do?”

Shrugging, Kyoto replied, “for now I'm not sure. Once I heal up I guess I'm going to hunt down Tano Slau and take revenge or die trying.”

“What a waste,” said the Cleric. “Tell you what, when you are finished with whatever you are here for and you need a place, go to the temple of Kormal located east of here. It's not hard to find. And we will accept you in our ranks. You could become a great Paladin.”

“A Paladin?” Kyoto hadn't heard the term before.

“A protector of the innocent. A demon hunter. They number few though are trained in the ways of the divine. They are the elite in Alesia much like the temples in Tai Jir are. Go there, and tell them Manei Kormal sent you.” Finishing the bandages to his foot, he put the items back into his bag. “I hope to see you in time. Until then, stay well. You are healing faster then most though your bones won't heal for awhile. The splints and bandages can be removed in two weeks, after that you'll be sore for about a month. So heal up and seek me out.”

Kyoto nodded, “Thank you Cleric.”

Standing he replied, “Manei will do.”

After the cleric left, Kyoto laid back in the bed, his thoughts of what the Cleric had told him and his offer. He had a place lined up, but he had to kill Tano. Though how he was going to do it, he wasn't sure. The last time he didn't lay a hand on him. He had to learn more, and he was in the perfect place to learn it. Libraries that housed all of the information this world had to offer, and the mage schools would have that weren't in the books. And in the meantime he could learn from Manei. In a couple of months he would leave in search of the mad man, but he had to get clues which this place was a wealth of knowledge. And maybe he could as Tanis tomorrow as well as he's one of the oldest living people, just celebrated his one thousandth birthday this last new year.

He seemed content as he drifted off to sleep. Tomorrow would prove to be a good day since before the slaughter.

Kyoto bowed once he reached the seat where Tanis sat. His visage betraying his age. The man looked to be forty years of age with gray streaks just in the past couple of years making themselves known. Tanis was a man with a thousand years of knowledge and twice that of wisdom. In his studies of the creation, Tanis had been a leader with the approval from the Goddess herself. He had done much in his time.

“Kyoto, Kame has told me much of what you accomplished as well as what you had gone through that very night. Please stand.” The look on his face was one of sympathy. “We must speak. Please, follow me.”

Kyoto nodded and followed the man to a room with Norifusa behind. Entering, the room was simple. A fire place, a few swords that looked to be very old. Against the north was was a bookshelf made from polished Toris wood, a wood used for it's sturdiness and and beauty. Once in, the door closed. He was instructed to sit.

A figure caught his eye, a female, a woman, dressed in all white. Beauty that was unearthly. A beauty that was natural but yet magical. She looked at him a smiled. He sat down smiling back. The woman sat down as well with Tanis and Norifusa.

Tanis spoke first, “Kyoto, I would like you to meet the head of our church, Yasima Alesia.”

Kyoto nodded, finding it difficult not to stare. Her blonde hair looked soft. She seemed to glow like the angel he saw earlier, and some how she seemed very familiar. Yasima's green eyes seemed to cut into his very soul as if she was looking for something.

Yasima broke eye contact when she spoke, her voice almost seemed musical. Goosebumps appeared all over him. Something about her was beyond anything human. Her very voice felt as if it was projecting energy. “Then this is the boy who you were speaking about.”

Tanis nodded. “Kyoto, there was only so much our friend Kame could tell us. Can you tell us what had happened?”

Kyoto nodded, it was painful to think about it, but if he wanted answers, he had to. “First; I want to know, have any of you heard the name Tano Slau?” Seeing Tanis' reaction proved he had. Alesia just simply watched him and as Norifusa already knew, he was indifferent.

Kyoto continued, “I have heard stories about war, art from the war with Ranvian that was quite gruesome. But what this man if you want to call him that did,” his voice began to get choked up and tears started to flow as he remembered his parents bodies being staked to the wall and Aya being some how controlled. “He had no rhyme or reason. He told me, it was fun, as his reason for doing what he did.”

Yasima looked at him, pain evident in her eyes as if some how she were responsible for what transpired. “We have to find him.”

Norifusa replied, “We don't even know where he's at.”

Kyoto spoke, “Wouldn't Alesia know? I mean, she is the Goddess and all. I mean, if the Cleric who visited me last night is right, she had to have known what was going on when she saved me. Why wasn't he stopped then?”

Tanis spoke, “A being like Tano Slau is not one who can be found. He exists, yet he doesn't. He had mastered the art of bending reality even to a celestial's eyes. There just isn't any way to find him.”

Kyoto shook his head, “So you sit back and allow this... this abomination to do as he pleases?”

Yasima looked down at the ground. He knew she was bothered by something. “Kyoto, Alesia didn't save you. The whole ordeal was shrouded. You surviving was your own doing.”

Kyoto couldn't believe it. “I was unconscious hitting the ground. If she didn't save me then either he let me live or I was lucky.”

“Kyoto, I can assure you, he didn't allow you to survive. He isn't one to allow a survivor,” said Tanis.

“Then why the hell did I live?!” Kyoto's anger and frustration was getting the better of him which caught everyone off guard. “My friend Aya was was merely a year from becoming an official student died. Eleven years of age. My twin sister, mother and father died. Even the advanced students who were better than me died. How is it that I survived? Why didn't I die with them or die instead of them? Tell me that! And no crap about me failing to be a protector to become a better one! I want real answers! I want to know everything so I can kill him myself!”

Once finished, Kyoto broke down, tears streaming, sounds of weeping and anger left his mouth. Yasima stood up and walked over, placing a hand on him. “Kyoto, you survived, that's all that should matter. You are stronger then you give yourself credit for. A force to be feared by those who do harm. Kyoto, you are a white knight painted in red with the blood of those who do evil. This is who you are. And soon you will see this. You seek vengeance right now which is because of your anger, pain and frustration for not having any answers. But answers will come to you in time. You will know what your destiny is as only you can choose it. You have several paths you can go down, which one you choose is your own choice. We can only help provide guidance.”

She paused a moment. “If you want your answers, go see Cleric Kormal. He can train you which in turn will give you the answers you need. Here you will have friends though. You will have teachers. All you have to do is ask. Ask and accept guidance. Till then you will be safe.”

Yasima's voice seemed to calm his mind. Her voice, the music that calmed the soul. But the outburst he had down got him exhausted. The negative emotions he was filled with drained him. This was something his father always taught him. “Don't dwell on your negative emotions. They deplete your energy. Mourn those who are lost and move on.” He always heeded those words till now. But how can one expect to move on from what he had witnessed.

“May I ask you something,” he asked.

Yasima nodded and knelt beside him. “Of course.”

“How can a man who enjoys watching people suffer exist? It doesn't make sense?”

“Evil is in everyone. The desire to do harm exists in everyone, even in the mother. Some ignore it, some embrace it. Those who embrace it can do the most horrible things. Those who ignore it don't have the guts to do what's needed in time of need. You have to find balance. Once you do, you may not find happiness, but those who benefit from it like children will find their peace.”

Chapter 5
Divinity

Kyoto reached the Temple of Kormal, it was closer to the tower then he had thought. It was a massive marble structure with the statue of Kormal with his hand out to those approaching, his wings unfolded showing the true extent of his magnificents. Walking up the large steps, passing by the clerics leaving, a few students he passed through the massive double doors that stood open and only closed when a storm would hit which wasn't very often.

As he entered, a young cleric approached and bowed. “I am Cleric Akmorad. How may I help you?”

Kyoto returned the bow. “I was sent by Manei Kormal and Yasima Alesia for training.”

The cleric stood frozen at the name Yasima Alesia. And after a moment he responded. “Please, this way-”

Kyoto realizing he didn't give his name, “Kyoto Kitsune.”

“Kyoto Kitsune.” Placing a hand on his arm he guided him towards the high cleric's office.

On either side of the main hall were statues of various angels built into the columns that held up the massive building. It was unlike anything he had seen. Even the Emperor's tower wasn't as magnificent though it had it's own symbolizm. Kyoto was led into a smaller hallway that had doors that lined either side. A couple were open revealing rooms that were vacant. He assumed the clerics slept in these ones.

They reached a door at the far end that was simple in design, but the simplicity was beauty in of itself as it felt more like the one behind this door was modest as a cleric should be. The temple design was meant to give the visitors a sense of wonderment while those who went to see the clerics knew the clerics weren't in it for anything other than truth and the need to help others. These doors and accommodations showed this.

Entering through the far door, Manei was sitting behind a desk looking at a few scrolls. Looking up he smiled. “Glad to see you here Kyoto. Please sit.” Looking at Akmorad he said, “Thank you.”

As the cleric left he looked at Kyoto. “I am glad to see you have decided to follow through with this.”

Nodding Kyoto said, “I want to know more. I want to be stronger for others so I may one day protect those I care about.”

The cleric replied, “There is more to protecting then simply getting stronger. The knowledge of the world is just as important. Knowing how to lead is vital, and knowing the hearts of man is the most important one of all as one can twist that heart and force someone to do their bidding.” He paused a moment. “Kyoto, your father taught you well. You have the capability to be a great warrior. Heck, in a one on one fight you could probably take out a paladin. But in an all out fight, you wouldn't survive. This is for one reason. A paladin can look into your heart and tell what is the one thing that drives you. If it's anything other than the will to live, you already have lost as he's ready to tear you apart. Your training will begin tomorrow. Cleric Shima Galinstra is going to be your teacher. She will teach you everything you need to know to become a cleric, then teach you everything to become a powerful leader and Paladin. The church of Galinstra is a powerful one indeed. Galinstra is the guardian of the gates of heaven.”

Kyoto felt the name was familiar and he had a longing to meet her. “Am I able to meet Galinstra?”

Manei nodded, “When it is time to gain the title of Paladin, she will honor you with that title.”

Kyoto nodded. “Then what is the next step?”

Manei smiled, “rest and eat dinner. Shima will be here in the morning to take you.”
Standing up, Kyoto bowed and walked to the door where Akmorad waited outside.

Chapter 6
Assassination

Kyoto had met with Shima who donned a breast plate that was white with silver trim, a long sword hung at her waist, the sheath white with silver celestial characters on it saying “Sacrifice Oneself for the good of all”. The hilt was white with a silver guard and pommel. It was a simple design but yet very beautiful. Her bracers, shin guards matched the rest and her clothing was white. White symbolizing purity of one's soul, and silver meaning the light of goodness.

Kyoto's initial reaction to her was she was stern, she took her job as a Paladin seriously. He figured with the hardness of her face even though she was only mid twenties, she had seen more then her share of action. A typical monk in the Marcian temples would maybe see action once by that age. But then the monks were trained to fight other men, not demons like the Paladins fight. Even a monk ran for his life in the face of a demon.

She led him through the town to get fitted for a suit of armor. According to her, books is postponed till he knew how to fight in a suit of armor as experience was a better teacher then a desk. She informed him that she would be taking him on some easier missions to deal with imps who were minor, though vicious. She gave him one week to learn.

Once they had gotten him fitted, she said, “There is a gathering at the temple of Alesia. Each time an angel speaks, we will be there if we are not on a mission. This one is doubly important as Tanis will be there with Alesia herself. You must know what they teach as they are the two who you will protect and serve. When you become a full flegged paladin, you will become a general in the army of Alesia. You become an elite, a general, a teacher and an icon. Some cannot accept that kind of roll, but people look up to you for guidance as they would an angel or the goddess. Know who they are and learn everything you can from them. Then you will be a deadly weapon against those who do harm.”

Kyoto nodded. He spoke up which she had informed him earlier that if he ever had a question, not to harbor it as you can only gain more insight if you ask. “Do you know a man named Tano Slau?”

Shima continued to walk at a leisurely pace to the blacksmith. “I have heard the name, as we are to keep an ear out, but I have never run into him. Manei informed me you'd ask about him. For now, let him go. When you are ready, you will find him, but until then, you must learn and adjust yourself otherwise you will faulter.”

They got to the blacksmith shop and in a half of an hour, the fitting was done. They would return the next day to retrieve the simple armor which would be heavier then hers but provide same protection. Her training ideas were similar to the monk's as they use weights for training. They helped the user increase their speed quickly. He told himself if he ever got the free time, he get some made. He had to improve quicker then anyone thought possible. He had to get to the point where he could face Tano again.

They reached the temple of Alesia. People made way for the paladin as they made their way to the steps. They would be standing at the top and watch over the crowd while she spoke. They reached the top of the steps and saw Tanis already there, standing near his guard, donned in battle armor.

“Why is everyone in armor for this? Isn't it just a teaching session going on?” Kyoto looked around as there were no ceremonial armors to be seen.

“Yes we are here to be taught but history has told us that when the goddess appears, those seeking to remove her or Tanis do too. So we must always be ready. Learn to keep your ears open to the lessons as well as to the slight noises that an assassin or a demon will make. Keep your eyes keen. Your senses must be attuned to the area. This I don't expect you to know now, but you will learn. For now, listen to the lessons.”

After a few minutes, a spot above the stairway grew brighter, as energy manifested. Kyoto could feel the massive amount of energy as the form of someone began to take shape. Wings of an angel appeared and casually flapped ruffling the white dress that appeared. The energy cleared though the being before them still shinned with magnificent brightness. He blonde hair was like the sun as the slight wind blew it back.

Kyoto stood there in amazement at what he saw. Though something was familiar about her beyond the gut feeling. No, from the back she looked familiar. Then it hit him. It was the woman Yasima when he spoke to Tanis. “She was Alesia?” he thought.

And her voice gave it away. A magical voice, smooth, soft, and kind sounding. “I welcome you all,” she said.

The lesson started. It was a lesson on her own past experiences. A lesson to stand up and keep pushing forward even when all else seems to be against you. Kyoto couldn't help but feel this was aimed at him.

Everyone stood there listening intently. At one point Alesia had everyone singing a hymn which sounded as if the entire world was singing. Wine was distributed out along with bread for sustenance as they had already been standing there over an hour. He wondered if this happened all the time.

During one of the songs, Kyoto paused. Something made him uneasy. His eyes darted around trying to find the source of it. There were so many people and the area consisted of tall buildings which made it difficult to check. Looking at Shima, he saw she was intently looking around. Though she seemed a bit relax. He wondered what the feeling could be.

A brief flash caught his eye. Off to the right, someone was sprinting between buildings. Successfully hiding once he reached his next spot. He moved so quickly, it was as if he was a moving shadow. The figure leaped onto the wall, a black curved blade could briefly be seen before he was gone again.

Kyoto stepped back and casually began to walk in that direction. Shima looked back then watched where he was going. Kyoto paid no attention to her efforts to get his attention. The figure showed briefly again before vanishing in through a side door. Kyoto moved quietly along the wall.

Shima nodded to the royal guards and moved towards Kyoto. Reaching the door, Kyoto peaked around the corner and saw a flight of stairs. Backing away, he came out from under cover and looked up. There was a window three stories up the south east tower.

Getting a running start he planted his foot on the column then launching himself he gripped the eve and pulled himself up. Shima watched him with some admiration. Though she was an elite, she had no illusion of being able to do that.

Continuing to the door she saw Kyoto look into, she pulled her sword, the blade glistening brightly in the sun. Moving slowly through the door, her blade ready to defend herself, she looked around. The door only led to a flight of stairs. Up top was a bell. Quietly moving up the stairway she readied herself for any attack.

Kyoto had found enough of a hand hold to climb the tower on the outside. Reaching the window, he found it was a stain glass window that didn't open. Looking up, he there was an opening where the bell resided. Climbing up, he took it quickly as he was quickly losing strength gripping the small crevasses. Reaching the top, he pulled himself up and was met with a black blade pointing at his nose.

“I must say,” the black clad figure said, “being able to climb that isn't easy. But I'm glad I got your attention, and the attention of the Paladin. It seems my job is finished.”

The blade rose then came down. Kyoto let go of his hold falling. Using his feet and hands he tried to grip, slowing his decent. After a second, his body was jarred as he struck the ground. Using this training, he lessened the pain and damage by rolling immediately. Looking up, he saw the flash of steel from Shima's blade.

Good, he thought. Another figure darted in the crowd unnoticeable it appeared. “Get Tanis out of here” he called out. The guards looked up and saw Kyoto was pointing a figure to a man who ran up the stairs at frightening speeds. Leaping down from the eve, Kyoto began to run over and saw the assassin who wasn't wearing a mask like the other dispatch the dozen guards who were around Tanis and Alesia. This guy is better, he thought to himself as he ran over realizing he probably won't make it.

The assassin seemed to vanish from his spot and appeared in front of Tanis swinging his black blade. Tanis though being a thousand years old and a veteran of war reacted quickly, though not quick enough. The strike cut him across his chest cutting the armor that was supposed to protect him. Though he didn't dodge it, it gave Kyoto the time he needed to get there.

The black haired assassin who's eyes were as sharp as his blade saw the boy coming and realized he had to abort killing Tanis. Turning his sword's blade horizontally, he stepped once and seemed to vanish again. Kyoto felt the danger move around him then saw him appear to the right.

Stepping back and bending backwards, the sword sliced through the air above him. But it stopped in the middle of the swing and twisted so the edge was pointing at him, then came down. Kyoto cursed himself as his hand came up knocking the sword off his path and turned. Losing his balance, his right hand came down to catch himself. Bouncing back up he had to sidestep as another sword strike came at him.

Kyoto's focus was on the blade and when an iron bead struck him in the forehead, it knocked him off balance, and a sharp pain followed by a warm liquid told him, he had been cut. Thankfully it was his left forearm. Seeing a thrust, he stepped in and sent an elbow that connected with the assassin's chest forcing him back.

Kyoto had to get a weapon and quickly. Seeing Tanis, the emperor signaled to him that he can use his sword. Running backwards as the assassin came at him, he gripped the sword and with the blade running along his forearm, he managed to block a cut that would've cleaved him in two. Deflecting it away, Kyoto spun the sword around, amazed at how light it was, he lashed out, sending a slash to the enemy's mid section. But it was obvious this man was no beginner.

He deflected the cut down as he moved up and over giving Kyoto no space to maneuver his blade. Another small blade came out, curved like the first as well as black. The small one came down stabbing the hand. Kyoto's sword was dropped immediately as he came in to do a head butt to the assassin's chest. The long blade cut into his neck, deep missing the artery by mere hair's width.

The assassin fell back, glaring at the boy. Then seeing several armed men running up the stairs and the Paladin on her way, he ran towards the soldiers slashing at a few then vanishing. The few he got fell, throats cut.

Kyoto's vision began to swim as the loss of blood became too much. He felt himself fall and was caught by Shima.

“Come on Kyoto, stay awake,” Shima called out.

He wasn't sure if it was do to the loss of blood, but a light took his entire vision before all went dark.

I would like to thank Crono for stating which program he used as I've been trying to find a fairly simple program for mapping. I love this program. Anyway, without further ado, here is the little portion of the planet that is colonized.

Hit one of the largest road blocks a writer can have. Lost 8 chapters of my book. My word count for NaNo is cut in half. This really bites. Stupid flash drives are too small. At least I remember most of what I've written

Chapter 7

Maruji

The dark figured turned the corner into the alley way, gripping his chest. It felt as if his ribs may have been broken. He knew that his failed attempt would be costly and he hoped his partner survived. Movement caught his eye. Ducking around a corner at an inner section of the alley, he peaked around and saw a dark figure stumbling about as if he were drunk. His keen sight saw the man's face. It was his partner and friend. His mask had been removed and a hideous gash from a sword ran down between his brow that blood flowed freely. He cradled his arm which the assassin saw his hand was removed.

Leaving his spot of hiding, he ran to his comrad. “Hang in there Gabe. We're almost to the hideout.”

Gabe was lost too much blood and used what little energy he had to walk. The assassin helped him along. Reaching a point where they had to cross a street, he watched till there was an opening and ran as quickly as possible to the next alley. He reached an iron lid that led to the sewers.

Placing Gabe against a wall, he used all of his strength to open the lid. It slid open reluctantly. Getting Gabe up, he brought him to the hole and had him climb down. Gabe's vision swam and he fell into the sewage from the city. Climbing down the latter, he closed the lid behind him. Reaching the disgusting water, he helped his friend up.

Trudging through the sewage, they reached a part of the wall. Using his free hand the assassin pushed on the wall. The concrete slid and opened into a room where several armed men and women were there ready to strike. Noticing the injured man, one walked over and grabbed him. Then when the assassin entered, the secret door was closed. A few tended to the bloodied one while the another looked towards the other.

A large man walked up to the assassin. Based upon the gold amulet that was showing of a skull, he was ranked as the leader. “Tell me Maruji, is Tanis dead?”

Maruji shook his head. He allowed the one looking after him to remove his tunic and tend to the broken ribs. “The avoided a death strike though he is wounded. I ran into opposition. Opposition I didn't expect to be there.”

The leader knelt in front of him. “What do you mean?”

Maruji looked at him. “Kitsune was there. Not sure why they were in Alesia, but one of the students were.”

The leader laughed. “A mere student stopped you? Maruji of the Gensai Ryu was stopped by a student.”

Maruji grinned. “You obviously haven't had any run ins with the Marcians Marcus. Their children can take out veteran soldiers. But no worries, I was still too much of a match. He's probably dead, if not in the infirmary. He unfortunately bought the time he needed to have the Paladin Shima to arrive after disposing of Gabe and the rest of the elite guard.”

Unsheathing his sword, he pointed the tip at Maruji. “I've said this before, failure is not an option. We are tasked with the most important mission. Getting rid of Tanis and the other elders is a mission that cannot fail.”

“Remove that blade Marcus, unless you want to sit on it for the remainder of your days. A failed attempt just means we'll have to try again. And if I managed to blunder that one, no one else here could do better as I am by far the best swordsman here.” Maruji glared at the man. The one bandaging him up finished and backed away feeling something is going to happen.

Marcus lowered the blade. “You are the better fighter, and if you used poison on the blade like the rest of us, Tanis would surely die.”

Walking over to Gabe who was laying on a bed as the others bandaged him up. Marcus walked over shoving one aside. “Him on the other hand is useless.”

With a swift motion, Maruji had drawn his wakazashi and thrown it. The blade pierced the back of Marcus's head and after a moment, the body fell lifelessly to the ground. Walking over to Marcus he pulled the blade out, wiped the blood off and sheathed it.

“You were a fool Marcus. You aren't a warrior. You were merely a thug who happened to be the King's son. You were no leader, and you certainly were no killer.” Maruji looked around at the others who sat there wide eyed. With the King's son dead, Maruji would certainly be the next mark as well as anyone who didn't report it.

“Tanya, report this. I will be a hunted man. No need for the rest of you to become hunted as well.” Maruji looked at Gabe who looked at him back. “Do not worry brother, you will live.”

Gabe, unable to grin said, “Maruji, you think we'd allow you to be a marked man? Do you think we'd want to try and hunt you down? Do you think we have any inclination of being able to beat you? An army we can fight, you we cannot. Sorry but if you are marked, I'll be marked with you.”

Tanya touched his shoulder. “He's right Maruji. We've been together for the past five years. No way would hunt you. No I think we'll stand and face the King's wrath together.”

Maruji looked around. The other two agreed as well. He sighed. “Then so be it. Finish bandaging him up and let's get moving. Don't want to be here when the king learns of this.”

Ducking behind a tree, Maruji watched as the King's soldiers moved, searching. It had taken a month to learn of the son's death and another three months to find the rogue assassins. Gabe hadn't survived his injuries and died a few days after the mission failure.

They had split up, Tanya and the others going under disguise in Alesia. Tanya had joined the Church of Galinstra as a cleric, giving up the path of killing. Wynn had joined the Elvesian alliance forces and had been promoted to captain, and Vance went on the path as Maruji did to direct the forces from the other two.

The squad of soldiers moved past and disappeared around the bend. He stepped out and moved in the other direction towards the city of Alesia. He had only needed to kill a couple of them but he knew the Rangers would be arriving soon if they weren't already, as well as the other assassins. Soon Alesia would be full of those looking to kill him and the others. This didn't bode well for them or those of Alesia. It isn't like he cared about those in the city beyond his principles of not killing innocent civilians.

Chapter 8

Mage

The blond haired warrior looked over the ledge of the cliff over the city of Alesia. It had been two years since he had seen the beauty. The emperor's tower reaching two hundred feet shy of the height of the cliff of the great Celestial Mountains. The wind blew his long bangs revealing the tattoo of the Kitsune temple which had a scar through it. His features had hardened from his training with Shima. His blue piercing eyes no longer filled with sadness, or grief, but instead looked to be the eyes of a veteran warrior.

The past three years since the attack against Tanis, Shima had been training him to progress quickly. After the year, he had surpassed her in combat and after that they left on a pilgrimage to attune his soul to the divinity which came at a much slower pace, though quicker then she had seen.

He still had some training left which would be done with the Elvesian forces. According to Alesia, he needed to learn to lead. A command would be given to him and with the second in command's help, he would learn strategy on the battlefield.

Making their way down the narrow path, Kyoto and Shima moved towards home where they looked forward to a soft bed and real food.

The two entered the Church of Galinstra to be met by a woman who had joined during their time here. She was named Tera, a woman from what Kyoto could tell could be dangerous though she had a gentle demeanor about her which Kyoto couldn't place. This confused him at times.

Reaching his room which looked untouched since he left, he placed his traveling bag on the floor. Removing his armor, he felt relieved. Next he removed the weights he had on his arms, waist and legs. He felt so much lighter, though he had gotten used to the weight as he wore them for the 2 years he had been out training, and most of the training at the church.

Going into his trunk, he pulled out a fresh set of cloths and left. He walked down the hallway, enjoying the marble floor touching his bare feet. Reaching the bath, he stripped and stepped in. He let out a sigh of relief as he melted into the warm water. Cold rivers and lakes got old fast, this was heaven.

The city was bustling with trade as the spring crops had come in. Shima had given him the rest of the day off to relax. He had decided to check out the mage school that was nearby to check for information on Tano. His research before he left said he was a hero from the war with the Ranvians. His talents had led the battles to tip in the Elvesian's favor many times. He wondered if soon after the war if he lost his mind.

Reaching the school, the massive archway towered above him. It was massive compared to any other entry ways he had seen. Walking through the entry way, he entered the school. It was massive, the entry hall was the biggest place he had ever seen. Even the hall to the emperor wasn't as large. Students walked around going about their business with books. Some repeating chants. A few kids sat in a circle using their magic to make balls of light dance.

A young man, only a couple years older than Kyoto walked up and bowed in respect. Kyoto returning the bow said, “This is greater then I have ever imagined.”

The young magician smiled. “I am pleased you like it.” Pausing a moment allowing Kyoto to absorb the room he continued. “I am Granshya, how may we assist you young Marcian?”

Kyoto figured the tattoo had given him away though he did his best to let his hair cover it. “I was wondering if I may speak with one of your instructors. I am doing research on someone specific and all that the library had to offer didn't provide me much aside from who he was.”

The young man nodded. “Yes of course. Follow me.”

Granshya led him down a corridor where rooms on either side had students in them practicing different spells. Reaching a door, the young man told Kyoto to wait there and he'll get an instructor to meet with him. Kyoto went to the doorway of one of the rooms and watched a female mage around his age struggle with a spell. He could tell she was exhausted as the energy seemed to just fizzle. He also noticed where the energy was coming from. Not from her, but the area itself which seemed to be full of energy yet the strain to absorb it to use the wild energy was great.

Seeing her let out a sigh of defeat Kyoto made his presence known. “It's a lot less strenuous if you allowed the wild energy flow into you and out through you instead of trying to herd it to where you want it to go.”

The girl seemed to not like someone telling her how to manifest. “I know what I am doing. But if you think you can do better, let me see you try.”

Kyoto knew he couldn't do it, but stepping in, he simply wanted to show her how to gather the energy. “What chant are you using?”

She folded her arms and said, “Not a chant. An incantation. There's a difference. Clerics chant.”

Kyoto nodded once, “ok, incantation.”

“Fireball,” she replied.

Kyoto focused a moment and gathered the energy through him. He had the knowledge of energy transfer for awhile now, since he trained at Kitsune. The ability to use wild energy was taught to him while he was in the mountains. It was slightly different then divine magic, but he figured the principles were the same.

He could feel the warmth from the energy gather. Then holding out his hand a ball of light formed, then focusing on the elements and pushing the air away from the energy, it burst into flame. The female watched as this boy she didn't know easily performed a high level spell.

“What school do you belong to?” Ashera was curious though she knew only 2 schools existed when dealing with arcane.

“Not part of a school. I'm training at the church of Galinstra to become a paladin. Got about another year left.” He made the ball of fire vanish.

Her eyes widened. “How old are you?”

Kyoto looked at here with a questioning glance. “Fifteen, why?”

She couldn't believe it, one at that age would just now be starting school with the clerics. Another fifteen years down the road, they would be starting training as a Paladin. Another ten years and they were officially a Paladin. She told him of this.

“I've been training my whole life to fight. The combat training was easy. And with my knowledge of energy, the magic training became easy once I learned the basic workings of it.” Kyoto then realized she didn't see or didn't know the tattoo.

Grandshya interrupted, “Tamiya will see you.”

Ashera said, “I have to go there anyway, I'll guide him.”

“Thank you Ashera,” Grandshya replied.

Ashera led Kyoto into the heart of the school. Desks lined this room where students studied book knowledge. At the end there was another door, and through that door were small rooms that had various instructors. She led him to one where a woman, maybe about as old, maybe younger than Shima.

“You must be Kyoto Kitsune,” Tamiya greeted.

At the name, Ashera understood why Kyoto could channel energy so well. Kitsune could do easily, though controlling wild energy was different. But maybe with the knowledge of controlling the light energy, he learned how to control wild through his previous training. This she thought to herself but she'd be sure to ask him when she got the chance.

Kyoto nodded to the instructor. “I have an inquirey about someone that you or someone here may have known.”

Tamiya nodded, “Go ahead.”

“I am inquiring about Tano Slau. Per historical records, he was once a hero in Alesia.” Kyoto hoped he would get some kind of idea where he could be located.

“Yes I know him, he was once my instructor as I am Ashera's. During the Ranvian war, Alesia was under attack. Without a wall to protect the city like we have now, the mages were hard pressed to defend it against the siege weapons. One night when it quieted down and everyone was resting, Tano decided to take the fight to the enemy. Using his illusion spells, he created a great beast that only the Ranvians could see and hear.”

“They fled in fear as their arrows and weapons had no effect on it. Some died of terror.” Her eyes looked as if she were watching it now. “The Ranvian forces never returned to Alesia, though battles continued to be fought. He led a group of soldiers to the final battle front. The group was only twelve soldiers who he said were to only stand and defend if there was an attack close by. The horror those men saw was beyond madness. He chose only twelve as what he conjured up in his illusions scarred those men for life. After the battle, the Goddess gave them death to free them of their tortured minds. Filled with shame and grief, Tano was never seen again. He won the war, but realized that the cost was too great.” Tamiya looked down at her hands.

“What did he do that was so horrible?” Kyoto wondered if it was something akin to what he witnessed.

She let out a sigh. “No one who witnessed it spoke of it. All I know is that the Ranvians refused to fight again. Many of their soldiers committed suicide, the others went insane. So I would figure if it drove a people bent on murder and destruction to bow in submission, then it had to be worst then the demons could muster. It had to have been a fear that even the demon lord Karagma couldn't match as they were under his command.”

Kyoto walked down the streets thinking over what Tamiya had said. Maybe his own illusion or what ever it was changed him as well. He had to know more. The man was a hero at the cost of his own soul it sounded like. Walking up the steps to the church he cleared his head and decided not to dwell on it. It would come when it was time. Now he knew he wasn't ready, but he was close.

Chapter 9

Discovery

Kyoto sat, sipping at his cup of tea. The next part of his training was under way. His men were enjoying the fine taste of ale. His group was small, only twenty men. But he didn't need much as this was just a patrol. This part of his training was to get him used to being in charge. At the start the men hated the idea of a boy leading, but not much they could do as it was customary that a Paladin led. Though they never lead for patrols unless they were in training.

They had traveled east and hit the first village. It was small though the inns made great profit as it was three days west to Alesia and a week east to the next stop. They arrived there mid the previous day and Kyoto ordered that they rest this day and be out the next. It was customary to be at an inn for four days before venturing out so they didn't like that idea. But the route they took passed by Tai Jir. He was eager to see how much the city had changed, yet he didn't want to see it as it was already bringing back the painful memories.

The next day led them out to the next village. The ride would be long but they were going at a relaxed pace which the men welcomed. They were ahead of schedule and he said he wanted to spend more time in Tai Jir to visit with the emperor. He had sent a letter on ahead. He expected to get a response at the village after the next. He also wanted to see if they did anything with the Kitsune temple and see about taking it over, though he knew it was likely that someone else already grabbed it as it was a great location.

They hit the village before Tai Jir, and waiting for him was a letter.

Dear Kyoto,

I would welcome your visit, though I will warn you that many are leery of you and so you should come straight here, your men can stay in the palace guest rooms for the time you are here.

Sincerely,

Norifusa Kame

Folding the parchment, he tucked it away. There was a young lady who sat in the at a far table looking at him. Kyoto took a drink and tried to ignore her. After a moment, she stood up and walked over.

“You're from the Kitsune temple in Tai Jir right,” the lady asked.

Kyoto replied, “Used to be about three years ago.”

“There was another asking if anyone had seen someone with her tattoo. It's been awhile but your tattoo reminded me of her.” The lady sat across from him.

Kyoto was interested. “Did she say her name?”

The lady nodded. “She said it was Sugao Kitsune if I recall. She headed north but she hasn't been back since.”

“How long ago?” Kyoto was getting a bit on the excited side.

“It's been about a year. I warned her that the city up north belonged to the Ranvians and that a girl like her would certainly be captured. But it appeared she was fairly arrogant. We haven't seen her. But maybe she went another route.”

Even Kyoto knew unless she trudged through the forest, there was no other route. Why she would head north he wasn't sure. Standing he went to his second in command.

“Keep going to Tai Jir, the emperor has guest rooms for you and the men.” Kyoto sounded more like a leader then he had the entire trip, yet as a leader, he isn't supposed to leave his men.

“Excuse me sir, but what about you?” asked his second named Belamy.

“Another matter was brought to my attention. I must head north.” Kyoto began to turn when Belamy stood and place a hand on his shoulder.

“Sir, this is your training. A leader ignores his personal life or orders his men to help him. As you are simply training, I would suggest you continue on with us if you expect to gain the Paladin title. Cause if you go, you can be sure you'll be expelled.” Belamy was a veteran and has been the leader in many squads. This was why he was chosen to help Kyoto.

“I don't care. I was just going along with the training till I found out where Tano Slau was. But I found something better. News that my sister lives came to me. I must find her,” he said.

“I know your past Kyoto. As we have two weeks in Tai Jir and a week travel to there, you have that time to meet with us here. If in 4 weeks when we get here and you aren't waiting, we will move on and it will be reported that you left. Meet up with us in Tai Jir if you can, but should you not show up here, your life as a Paladin will be over.” Belamy sat down.

Kyoto ran up to his room to grab his stuff, then he headed out.

Chapter 10

The horse moved along as a relaxed pace. Kyoto wanted to keep it moving as long as possible rather than trying to make it sprint as the horse would last longer and therefore cover more ground. Plus at this point if Sugao was heading back his way he would see her, otherwise he would find her. He knew he would find her.

A massive figure moved out into the middle of the road along with another much smaller man. The big man held a blade that seemed of impossible size. It would weigh a ton and if the guy was strong enough to wield it, it would've been slow. The man next to him was scrawney and held a dagger in hand flipping it.

As he got closer he saw men moving in behind him. He continued till he came five feet from the two in the front. He knew the others were moving in slowly. A coupe had crossbows and another had a short bow. The others held swords, none wore armor. These were trained men, they were bandits.

“Hail friend,” the big one said in a deep voice.

Kyoto nodded in response.

“What brings you into our neck of the woods?”

“Vacation,” was Kyoto's response though he knew the big one was too smart for that.

“Vacation with a sword and armor? Not much of one if I judged right.”

“It my 'just in case' plan. You know like plan b?”

The big man laughed. “Do you think you'll need it?”

Shrugging Kyoto replied, “I hope not. It has yet to see blood.”

“A greenhorn huh? Well only a fool would think he'd never have to shed blood, especially being in the military.”

“Well there hasn't been a battle in fifty years aside from the Marcian cleaning up the land from the filth of those who cowardly attack the harmless villages.” Kyoto knew he was pushing the big man's buttons, but to his surprise the big man only laughed.

“There will be war again eventually. And I'm sure you'll see it. But tell you what, if you come quietly, we'll let you keep that blade clean.”

Kyoto grinned, the man was stepping into the trap. If he had to fight, he would have the advantage of being underestimated. “I'd rather just be on my way if you don't mind. I'm a bit on a time restraint.”

“Short leave huh? Bummer.” Kyoto caught the ones behind aiming their cross bow. “But I guess you leave me no real choice.”

The cross bows shot. Bending down next to the horse's neck, the bolts ricocheted off his back. Rolling off he was already on them, not worrying about his sword, he struck one of the crossbowmen in the throat making him drop his weapon and strive desperately for breath.

The own with the bow fired piercing Kyoto's left arm. Wincing he moved towards him next. His foot came down on the man's knee shattering it. The rising, he brought his elbow up striking the man's jaw. Grabbing the falling man's arrow, he threw it at the other crossbowman piercing the neck though the artery was missed.

Kyoto misjudged these men, they were well trained and moved with precision. The swordsmen moved and came at him reading one another's mind. Kyoto had to move out from between. The first moved in followed by two more behind him. Removing his sword belt he unsheathed the sword and used the hard sheath as another weapon.

Their weapons clashed and the third one came in to skewer Kyoto. Side stepping Kyoto cut one of the men's wrists and bounced the sword and threw it at the other oncoming man while striking the other in the chest with his sheath. The man ducked the sword and another had to move out of the way.

Bear stood back and watched the boy move like a master. With the mark over his right eye, he knew the boy was fibbing. That was the mark of the Kitsune temple who were better than a dozen men at a boy's age. Even with the arrow through his arm, he was moving swiftly. He had to stop it quickly if any of his men were to survive which so far they have.

The one with the arrow through his neck sat there wide eyed not believing the arrow had missed the artery and spine. He would live though it would hurt like hell getting it removed. The others that were struck looked on in wonder. They had under estimated the boy.

“Halt!”

The fight stopped, Kyoto had another in an arm lock as was ready to shatter the elbow.

“Well not too often we have a Marcian in Elvesian armor. But it appears the rumors are true. The Kitsune temple really is gone if you are forced to be in the service of the Elvesians.”

Kyoto pushed the man aside and stared at Bear. “My temple may be gone but there's more than enough temples left to take its place. Besides... the temple lives within me and my sister.”

Bear stopped a moment and grinned. “Tell you what. As I don't particularly wanna see any more of my brothers hurt, why don't I challenge you. Should you beat me, I will show you where your sister is and you two will be free to go. If you lose, you will become a slave, or die if it comes to that.”

Kyoto held out his blade, pointing at Bear he said, “Why don't we make it easy and you just give me my sister. I don't want to fight anymore but you attacked first. I just want to find my sister. If you don't want to tell me then fine.”

Bear laughed. “Sorry kid, but sadly we are starving and need money. What you have on you will feed us awhile till we are forced once again to do this.”

Kyoto pulled out the coin bad he had. “Then here, take it.” He tossed it at the man's feet.

Bear shook his head. “No, see Zan' Elel has a naughty trade called slavery. We trade you in and the money will feed me and my family for months. A Marcian kid as yourself is worth a lot.”

“As I have no other choice then, fine.” Kyoto stepped forward and felt a blow to the back of his head. Blackness took hold quickly as he collapsed to the ground.

His head pounded madly as he slowly opened his eyes. It was dark out. Through the bars he saw the night sky and the stars. The various constellations like Alesia and Kuromu. Kuromu was an angel that many did not know but was only brought up briefly to teach the dangers of looking to evil as an answer. Apparently evil consumed him and he paid for it with his life.

Sitting up, he saw a couple other cages and a several tents and makeshift tents. Turning around he saw Bear talking with a few others. Looking at the bars he sighed, they were iron, tough to break.

“Don't bother, we know you Marcians can break out of a lot of stuff but the Iron bars should stop you,” called out Bear.

Kyoto knew it was useless and decided best to let the day come. At some point- soon he hoped- he would be able to free himself. They obviously had a lot of run ins with Marcian forces and knew their limits.

The King of Zan 'Elel sealed the final envelope that contained the orders he were to give to the armies of the Ranvian. Setting it aside on a stack that contained a dozen of similar orders, he waved for the messenger to take them. Putting them in his bag, he ran off.

The King relaxed, then covered himself with his arms as there was a sudden chill. The torches flickered then the light died down. A shadow seemed to grow out from the wall.

Standing nervously, the king went to one knee where he could see his lord. “My lord Sakan, the armies will be ready and the spot you declared will be cleansed of the scum that currently reside there. Given two weeks, they will be amassed there.”

The shadow formed revealing long black hair and blue eyes that were captivating to the point of being sucked in if one stared to long. His white robes flowed as if they were alive around him. He grinned, “Good Malvis, and soon you will rule all of Alesia along side me.”

Malvis bowed, “Thank you my lord. It will be an honor to drive your forces to the walls of Alesia and end their reign.”

“Stand Malvis and rest. You have work to do and it would not do to have you be too tired to perform well. Believe me, should you fail, your life in hell will be much more unpleasant than most.”

Bowing once more Malvis left the room toward his own chambers. Sakan grinned and his hair began to recede leaving behind tattoos. His image faded within the shadows again.

Another figure was in the room, ready to strike when Sakan was present but now he thought, wondering what the orders were for. Surely to muster forces to attack Alesia but it would be a loss cause. The forces of the Elvesians and the two sister cities would obliterate the Ranvian forces and the seal on hell was reinforced meaning only one or two demons could come through at a time and if they interfered then the Angels would back the three blessed races.

He left his spot of hiding, his black hair rolled up in a bun to keep it out of his way. It couldn't have been Sakan who had visited Malvis, the seal only allowed a couple of lesser demons to escape. Or so he thought.

He moved through the hallway towards the King's room, he stopped when he reached a corner, and peaking around he saw two armed guard keeping watch. The hallway was too long and even though he was quick, they would make too much noise.

A feeling of someone approaching behind him alerted him. As a master assassin and his fine tuned senses that have sharpened the last three years since his run from the assassins of Malvis, he's been able to feel when someone one was approaching. He waited, counting down the distance. As he got closer, the feeling got stronger. When he was sure the man was only a couple of feet behind, his sword was unsheathed and the blade was arching to split the figure in half.

The assassin stopped as no one was there. Yet he still felt the presence. It was strong and it caused goosebumps.

Maruji.

Maruji turned again back to the two soldiers. They stood there, no change.

Maruji.

Maruji went into a pocket and pulled out a small spherical device. Something wasn't right, and from what he could tell, it was the one in the room that Malvis was talking to. Tano, a master illusionist, hero of the Ranvian war.

A slight noise alerted him and as he turned, a hand gripped his throat and slammed him against the wall across the hall. He was held two feet above the ground by an elongated arm. In the shadows a face appeared, it was hideous. A beast, pale white scaly skin with red eyes. The snout was long and saliva dripped from impossibly long teeth.

Looking over he noticed the Guards remained looking on as if they didn't see him.

I can't have you kill him yet Maruji. No, I have use for him still. And afterwards I want the pleasure of skinning him alive and eating his flesh.

Maruji still held the device that was no bigger than a bead. Throwing it to the ground, there was a painfully bright flash that would've blinded him as well if he didn't close his eyes.

The hand withdrew, dropping him. The light subsided, and he noticed the guards were blinded as well. He had a chance to kill the king but he knew he would die shortly after as Tano would have no tolerance. Running over to the window, he shattered it using the pommel of his sword, and jumping out, he landed on a small ledge.

He looked down, breathing heavily. Below was a straight drop to the city streets. I wish I could slide down the wall like that Marcian boy could. Moving quickly along the ledge, he jumped to a nearby roof and ran out of site.

Tano grinned, he liked the assassin, he was as clever as Tano was intelligent. A mind worth calling a worthy opponent. But he had to be clever. He was a wanted man and has survived three years with assassins hot on his trail. The man was getting better by the day.

What a dangerous team he and Kyoto would make, he thought. Turning he left down the hall leaving a bloody mess from the guards he dismembered and disemboweled.

Chapter 11

Kyoto awoke suddenly to the sounds of hoofs running across the ground. Sitting up, he looked through the morning's fog. Hundreds of dark shapes moved swiftly on horse back. This wasn't the group that would be coming to buy him and the other slaves, this was an armed force.

He looked over and saw Bear standing there, a worried look on his face.

“What's going on,” Kyoto asked.

“Something not good. That force is too large.”

“I can help you escape if you let me go.” Kyoto watched as the riders got closer.

Bear took out the keys and handed them to Kyoto. “You are on your own. I don't wanna see you die but I can't help you either.”

Taking the keys he unlocked his own cage. Before he could get to the next, the first of the riders were on them. Using the cage as a boost, he jumped tackling the first rider off the horse. They collided with the ground and Kyoto heard a crack. Standing up, the soldier didn't budge. Kyoto grabbed his sword and moved over to the next cage where six others watched. Two were boys, the other four being women. One was Marcian, part of the Chiyu temple. The others looked as if they were from Sahadra. The two men were probably Elvesian soldiers that were on patrol.

Unlocking the cage, he could hear the screams of those from the camp. The soldiers overwhelmed the small bandit group fifteen to one. And he knew that they were in that count.

“Run for the trees. Keep heading south till you reach civilization. You should hit a city or a village within a couple of days.” He turned and ran to the next one.

Two horsemen were on top of him, swinging at him with their swords. Diving between them, his sword removed the leg of one of the horses. The horse toppled taking the rider and the other horse and rider down with it. Kyoto was on top of them before they had time to get up, his sword piercing the faces of the soldiers. He grabbed another sword and ran to the cage door.

A hand reached for him and gripped tightly. It was a hand of one of the prisoners. Looking up he froze. Before him was a blond girl, one that had the mark of the Kitsune temple. Tears were rolling down her face.

“Kyoto,” she said, her force crackling from the overwhelming emotion of seeing her brother for the first time in three years.

“Sugao,” Kyoto quickly unlocked the cage and helped her and the others out. “Sugao, I need you to help these people reach the safety of the forest.”

“What about you?” The thought of finally reuniting with her brother to lose him again began to frustrate her.

“I'll be along, I need to get the others free. I'll be right behind you. Please go.”

Sugao nodded and she escorted the others towards the trees. Running to the other cage he unlocked it and helped the others out. Looking around, he saw the devastation of the raid. Seeing Bear fighting off three men while trying to protect what could've been his wife and children, he ran over.

His blade cut through one and the other pierced another. Bear took that moment to press the advantage on the third and in a moment had that one slain.

Looking at the boy he said, “I thought you would've fled by now.”

Shaking his head, Kyoto replied. “Can't leave one who's protecting his family.”

The man smiled, but then his face darkened as a dozen more riders were coming at them. Kyoto felt something stir within him. A power in his body grew. He stepped forward and pointed towards the tree line.

“Go! Get as many people out of here as possible!” Kyoto wasn't sure what was bringing on his confidence, but he knew he could stop them all here and now.

Bear paused, but something in Kyoto's eyes told him he should listen. The boy was young, yet the look in his eyes told him, he had all the wisdom and power in the universe and he was about to use it.

Beings like this make me sick. No mercy will be given to those who are cowards!

The voice in his mind was his, yet it wasn't. He saw the area had cleared of the innocent. A few of the riders went into the forest but he knew a couple would be nothing. Here, before him was an army surrounding him.

Sugao turned and she could barely see Kyoto anymore as the riders had surrounded him. “No!”

She bolted towards the clearing but massive arms grabbed her. She fought violently at the restrainer, but Bear hung on tight. “He knows what he is doing! You can't help him right now!”

There was a bright flash, then everyone was knocked off their feet by a shock wave. Bear and Sugao sat up and saw a beam of light coming from Kyoto shooting into the heavens. Horses disobeyed their riders and tried to flee. Beams of light rained down striking each soldier. With each strike a soldier was vaporized leaving only their suit of armor.

Sugao's eyes were wide with fear and wonder. Three years ago, he was one of the best students, equal to that of an advanced student, but now he was beyond that of the grand masters. “How,” was all she could ask.

Bear couldn't respond beyond a shake of his head. He was thankful Kyoto hadn't decided to unleash that on him when they had attacked him. After a moment of screams and a light show that was terrifying, all was quiet. The survivors waited, silent, afraid that the one that wiped out the entire force was going to come after them next. There they waited, nerves on end, waiting for what could possibly be their end.

Tano grinned, the light show from the field was wonderful. It was brilliant. Whoever had done that was certainly worthy of praise from the one who considered himself the most powerful being. Perhaps it was Kyoto finally awakening, thought Tano. But if he failed in killing him, who had succeeded?

Maruji was in an alley way resting and nursing his ankle which he twisted. The light show from beyond the walls caught his eye as he had seen the pillar of light.

“Great, I hope that isn't the sign of the real Sakan arriving, this world will die in a matter of days.”

Looking over he saw the main road had filled up with the inhabitants of Zan 'Elel. They watched in horror and wonder at the light that had shot to the heavens, as well as the trails of energy that seemed to come from it and disappear beyond the wall.

If it was Tano, no good could come from it, but he was the master of illusion. No who ever did this had a massive source of power. An Angel? A demon? Both had seemed more likely than a mortal.

Sugao waited for a couple of minutes and where there was no movement, she started to walk forward. Pausing, she saw blue eyes that had an ominous glow stare at her. The one before her was Kyoto, yet it wasn't. And after a moment, that glow subsided and it was Kyoto looking at her.

“We need to get everyone to Tai Jir,” suggested Kyoto.

Bear nodded, though he didn't like the idea, it was the only one anyone had. At least the only good one.

Sugao looked at her brother, “what was that?”

Kyoto shook his head, “I don't know. It was something I knew I could do. I couldn't copy it, that's for sure.”

Kyoto moved past her and helped get everyone motivated to move. He had a few weeks which was good.

Æ·Kyoto Kitsune
The Protector

Chapter 12

“This is truly troubling,” the Emperor of Tai Jir said.

Kyoto and the refugees arrived as Kyoto's men were pulling out. They met with Emperor Kame and Kyoto told the ruler everything that had happened. It wasn't good news either. They were thankful most survived but the movements of Zan 'Elel meant another was was brewing and it meant dark times were on their way.

A messenger had already been sent to Sahadra and Alesia warning of their movements. The refugees were given accommodations at either the palace, an inn or at Chiyu for healing. News had spread quickly that the Kitsune twins had arrived in Tai Jir. Some didn't like that notion, others were relieved to see the two were doing well.

Kyoto sat across the table from Kame, Kyoto hadn't forgotten what he had done that night, but he saw it more of a blessing then anything to fear. Though it did raise questions and he wondered why he couldn't have done that when Tano was murdering his family.

Belami leaned forward, placing his elbows on the table. “Why would they gather? Between them and Toric, they can't hope to beat us. Their forces are small.”

Kame nodded in response. He was the oldest there and he has seen much of what has happened. “Their forces are small yes, but during the last war, we out numbered them as well. Last time though, they used smaller forces to fight us. This time their forces from what my sources tell me are much larger. Though we may still crush any forces that fight us head on, we can't hope for that. The last war was fought between few men and therefore lasted for decades as no one could get ground. It was a war that was not fought with attrition. It was a war of wills. Who would give in first would win. Tano had been the one to break their will.”

Kyoto looked out a window nearby and saw the sun was vanishing over the mountains. “That's what I heard from a mage. He was supposedly a great man once.”

Kame nodded, “he sacrificed his sanity to bring an end to the war.”

Kyoto shook his head, “no, something is right though. Why would he have attacked the Kitsune temple? There are better targets.”

Belami answered that. “Madness has no rhyme or reason. I don't want the death of your family to mean any less, but sometimes there isn't more. It could've just been convenient, or a challenge that he sought to over come. Why do the Ranvians cause war? It's a madness that we can't understand, and we shouldn't try.”

Kyoto was furious to hear that Tano may have just found killing his family convenient, but he knew that wasn't true. “No, even madness and chaos have purpose. There are reasons to ever action even when the one performing the action is unaware of it. No, Tano and Zan 'Elel have their reasons and it would be best to know what they are if we want to win.”

Kame grinned at the boy. Belami nodded his head, Kyoto may not currently be a good leader, but he was intelligent in the ways of life. He would make a great ruler if he was ever given a chance. That was something the Emperor had hoped. The events that unfolded, he hoped would bring Kyoto to his destiny as the goddess had told him. Though the way to do it was uneasy. What if they failed? What if great potential is wasted by his death? But then this was Alesia who was talking about this. If the Goddess was unsure, she wouldn't do it.

There was a commotion outside that made the three stand up, Belami was ready to draw his sword.

Kyoto recognized the voice outside. “Damnit! I need to see the emperor! Let me in!”

Kyoto stepped to the door and opened it, Bear was standing there, he had cleaned up and his wounds were stitched up and bandaged. Bear looked at Kyoto.

“Well boy? You get to speak to the emperor but I can't?”

Kyoto replied, “Because I am a commander working my way to paladin. I have the rank.”

Kame called out, “it is fine Kyoto. I have a few questions for him.”

Bear was let in and Kyoto closed the door behind him. Bear stood and bowed, it was evident he was not used to seeing royalty.

“Speak Bear.” Kame stood slightly amused at the nervousness of the large man.

“Sire, uh, lord... Emperor, I have a request.” Bear realized he the man before him was one of the elders. One of the very few that still lived from the time their races were created. “We no longer have a home and many of use are able bodied men and women and we would like to get work so we can have a place to live.”

The emperor had a cruel sense of humor at times, and this was one of them. “You had many times attacked the villages. Why would we help you beyond the hospitality we currently have given.”

Kyoto was about to say something but saw the look on the emperors face was not one of anger but one of slight amusement.

“For that we are sorry. Being a group who didn't belong anywhere we had to fight for our survival.” Bear pleaded with the emperor, true emotion poured from the large man.

The emperor leaned back a moment and studied the man. “We've been discussing this as well as what Zan 'Elel had done. Alesia is the city you will want. A couple may find their way in a temple and therefore their families will be cared for. Otherwise, Alesia is going to be the city you want. They have the resources to bring in refugees. Kyoto will lead his men and whoever doesn't get a job at a temple within the next couple of days there. In the mean time, I have a few questions for you.”

Bear relaxed a bit, he nodded his acknowledgement and acceptance of the questions. The questions were simple. The attack was provided in detail again and it seemed it was the first time Zan 'Elel had unleashed any kind of an attack on them. They found bear served in the Ranvian was as a soldier but had thankfully missed the final battle. He did know a few and those few who were there killed themselves or were struck down or executed for their madness.

Dinner was brought to them as well as drinks. Nothing more about the attack was discussed, just idle chatter. Kyoto was asked what his time in Alesia were like. Bear had asked why Kyoto wasn't part of the Kitsune temple. That was a somber discussion that left Bear feeling sorry for the boy and hate towards himself for keeping the brother and sister for slave trade.

Kyoto had interested Bear. Age fifteen and he had already experienced so much. In a couple of weeks when they reached Alesia he may get his Paladin title which bear learned he would be one of the elite forces that dealt with the random demon attacks that happen occasionally and also lead armies into war. His actions during the attack showed he had promise as a leader. Bear was going to make sure he followed this boy as he showed tremendous strength beyond that of anyone else he had ever seen.

Kyoto and the group left the village. They had one more, then they would be on the last stretch. Kyoto realized Sugao wasn't saying much, she seemed to be talking with a few of the children from the villages. During the whole trip she seemed to have been keeping away from him, only saying a few words and giving him a fake smile. He wondered if she still didn't believe it or if something else bothered her.

Getting off his horse he waited till she was near. “Sugao, can I talk to you?”

Sugao walked over to him and they went to the side of the road where they could talk privately. “What's wrong?”

Sugao looked away, she felt uneasy around him. “Nothing.”

Kyoto let out a sigh, he knew she was lying. “Since after the attack, you've said few words to me. It's like you're ignoring me.”

Sugao looked at him, her eyes told him everything. She didn't know who he really was. “You've changed so much Kyoto. And with what I saw, I don't know who you are. I can't tell if this is some kind of dream,or if I've truly lost everything. When I look at you, you are not the same brother you were. You've lost your carefree nature, you lost your love of life. I can see it in your eyes.”

Kyoto looked down. He knew he had changed. But how could he not after what happened. “I can't live carefree anymore. I had to change to adapt. If I'm going to protect those I care about, I can no longer be a chi-”

He was cut off as there was a high pitched squeal. Kyoto looking over saw his men battling small creatures. Jumping onto his horse, he told Sugao to help those behind. He turned and rode off at a spint.

Small red creatures jumped around and slashed at the soldiers and the refugees. Their claws were like daggers, black Mohawks topped their red scalp and massive ears framed their tiny, malnourished looking face. They stood merely three feet tall and had horribly thin bodies which from what he could tell could take a beating.

Jumping off his horse he met one of them and slashed at it. The creature was quick, almost too quick. When he lashed out in retaliation, Kyoto barely managed to block the attack. Another jumped at him but was skewered by Bear's massive sword.

“Come on Kyoto! We could use that power of yours!”

Kyoto didn't feel what he felt before. His chest burned as one of the creatures connected with its claws. Kyoto stumbled back and held his chest.

He waited for the creature to strike again and in an arc, his blade cut through the creature, severing the thing in half. The sword rested and for a brief moment Kyoto thought it was glowing, but the glow vanished.

Kyoto charged where the remaining creatures fought the soldiers. The soldiers were fairing well, but knew eventually they would begin to fall back as the creatures were too wild. He stopped near Belami and struck an arm of one of the creatures. The creature yelps and backed off nursing his wrist.

“Where did these guys come from,” asked Kyoto.

“There was a brief light and when it was gone these guys were there. So in truth I don't know,” replied Belami.

Kyoto was defending as he built up energy. His hand began to catch on fire as he began to gather the spell Ashera showed him.

“When I tell you, protect yourselves behind your shields. It's gonna get hot.”

The men nodded and once Kyoto gave the order they were behind the shields. Kyoto felt a burst of new energy and the red and orange flame turned to a black flame. He launched it at the nearest creature then out of reaction raised his arms to protect his face.

The creatures screamed in agony, when no one felt heat, they lowered their defenses expecting to be in another fight but to their surprise the creatures were screaming in torment. The flame didn't seem to be killing them, just torture them. They tried to douse the flame to no avail. Many sought death and skewered themselves or one another to escape the pain.

Belami watched, he felt sorry for the creatures as a few of them seemed to be pleading for the pain to stop. Many fell to their knees praying to Kyoto to stop. Belami saw the look in their commander's eyes. A look of satisfaction, a look of not caring about those who pleaded. This terrified him. But realizing Kyoto wasn't going to do anything, he began cutting down the creatures, many waited for their turn, waited for their one escape.

Kyoto saw Belami kill the last one, he had felt the satisfaction of watching them suffer, though he wasn't sure why. It was as if he knew these creatures, like he knew what they had done in the past.

Belami walked up, “What the hell was that sir?”

Kyoto was unsure himself, but he knew he did it and consciously. “I don't know. I was going to hit them with a spell a mage showed me. Fireball I think, but before I threw it, the flame turned black. Not something I know how to do exactly.”

“I wasn't talking about the flame. He watched them writhe in p-” He was cut off as he saw Sugao running up.

“Everything alright up here?” Sugao looked at the fallen creatures.

Kyoto nodded, “We should continue. Let's get these bodies out of here and get moving before more show up.”

The soldiers sheathed their weapons and worked to get the bodies to the side of the road. Sugao watched Kyoto move the bodies and sighed. She noticed Belami was't very pleased. What about she didn't know but when he looked at Kyoto, it seemed almost as if he held her brother in contempt.

Chapter 13

The boy struggled hopelessly against the chains. The soldiers had placed him in the center of the clearing. There were hundreds of them all watching. The boy of ten cried to be let go but soldiers just laughed as his predictament. The king walked up to the boy with a smile.

“You should be honored,” said Malvis. “Not every day can one be the bringer of glory to an empire. You my boy will be the bringer of the Ranvian empire. You will be remembered as the one who gave strength to a weary people.”

The boy looked at him, his eyes filled with fear and a hint of hate.

“Yes, display the hate. Make sure that you hate me and everyone when it is time. Be our savior Tasuda by hating us.”

The crowd parted as a hooded figured entered the circle. Malvis turned and bowed. The figure walked up to the boy a grin could be seen beneath his hood.

The figure leaned in close to his ear. “You will be spared as you have much power Tasuda. I can't say the same for those who have done this to you though.”

The hood was removed revealing the tattooed head of Tano. Malvis looked on in shock. “Who are you!”

“I am your lord Sakan, or at least had fun portraying him. Never the less, I will be bringing him forth for you. I'm sure he'll reward your sacrifice.” Tano grinned.

Several soldier stepped forward and charged the man, but with a single wave of his hand, they were fighting one another. Malvis ordered them to stop to no avail. Tano grinned as he flew into the air. And with one word, “fight” everyone was at one another. Blood drenched the rain soaked field. The king moved near the boy and watched in horror as his own men brutally slaughtered one another.

Tano let out a laugh of pure enjoyment. Looking down at the king, his fingers signaled for him to come to him and against his will, Malvis was raised high into the air.

“My dear king, you have served your purpose. And I have one final use for you.”

Long sharp finger nails grew and in a swift motion the king's throat was slit. Blood poured out and in a moment the king was dead, all life in his eyes gone. Malvis laughed again. He wanted to enjoy this blood bath but he had work to do which was much more important then his enjoyment for his mission would ensure he had much more fun and a lot more challenges than a simple wave of his hand.

The body dropped lifelessly and was impaled on the stake Tasuda was tied to. Tano lowered himself to where Tasuda stood, the blood from Malvis dripping onto the boy's face. Tano looked at the circlet on his head. It was fancy for one who wasn't royalty, a sign that it had some magical properties which was rare. He knew the properties though. It suppressed the boy's chaotic powers. It was useful enough to prevent the destruction of the city though it didn't work fully when one angered him enough. It allowed the power to focus more, but that focus wasn't what he was after.

“I will unleash you boy. Your power will should never be controlled. Your power is too important. But the king was right, you will unleash your power to bring forth the dark lord, but you yourself will live.”

Reaching up, Tano grasped the crown. Tasuda screamed out his resistance and tried to move his head, but being tied did little to help him. Tano removed the crown and stepped back quickly. Nothing. His face turned to a frown.

“Well,” he paused a moment, “looks like there may be some sacrifice. Maybe some pain.”

He hand raised, but he stopped a moment. The boy was silent but he felt the power rise. He stepped back more and watched in amusement. This would certainly prove exciting. What looked to be black smoke rise from his body was in fact energy from the dark realm. The black energy intensified and in a moment if flowed freely off of him. Other colors began to get mixed in as well as white energy which signified the holy energy.

“No wonder he's so chaotic, he can tap into everything. Interesting.”

The ropes snapped and ethereal wings began to spread, the shape much like an angel's though instead of white, it was constantly shifting multiple colors. The crown had sealed his powers so much that it built up like a volcano and exploded, Tano hypothesized.

Tasuda's head snapped up and a feral cry left his mouth, something a child should not be able to do. A spiral of energy erupted from him and shot towards the heavens. A wave of energy washed over the illusionist nearly knocking him off his feet. The pressure in the area grew as pure energy removed what oxygen there was. The ground shook violently and fissures began to appear extending from the now floating boy.

Tano was finding it hard to remain in the area. A power like that could obliterate the entire world, it would not do to have Sakan have that power. Tano made it a mission to keep the boy away from the man, maybe he could take him to his home and train him.

Another wave exploded from Tasuda, this time Tano was unable to remain standing, the wave knocked him onto his back. His defensive spells leaving him. He now felt what anyone else around would've felt, the intense pressure that threatened to crush anyone unprotected as well as suffocation from the lack of air. This also made it impossible to focus for any new spells. He hoped this ended soon enough, though guess it didn't much matter, this death would mean nothing except the boy being loose afterwards.

Gravity seemed to even lose against the boy's power as rocks and even Tano were lifted effortlessly off the ground. The rocks then shattered as the pressure increased to incredible levels. Tano could no longer see straight, consciousness began to leave him and soon after death would follow, but at this point there was nothing he could do. With a final grin, he was a pile of goo upon the ground, his remains unrecognizable.

With the final death, the energy subsided and Tasuda fell to his hands and knees. He was exhausted and found it difficult to move. Looking back, he saw a hole in the earth with an orange glow coming from it. Without much more thought, Tasuda stood and ran into the woods.

A man rose from the hole, his black hair flowing in the wind, his white feathered wings stretched out to full extent, a wing span that only two others had, a wing span that signaled the power he possessed. He stepped onto the wet grass and let out a sigh of satisfaction. For far too long he had gone without the touch of water on his feet. The wind blew and goosebumps formed across his naked body. He closed his eyes taking in the sensations he hadn't felt in hundreds of years.

When he had enough black robes formed and his wings vanished. He would wait on his armor if it was necessary, though his sword was. A blade formed in his hand, the horned and bladed hilt gleamed with the blackness he was used to and the silver reflected the light from the moon. He sheathed the longsword and started off to Zan 'Elel where he would begin his conquest. There he would summon 'his' children.

Chapter 14

Kyoto stood straight and arms behind his back. The audience in the throne room was limited to the command he was given, his sister, Shima, Tanis, the Goddess and a few Angels. Belami had recommended that Kyoto be given the title of Paladin for his bravery in both rescuing the camp and saving everyone from the creatures.

“Today we recognize the bravery of one boy who from this day forth shall no longer be a boy, but a man as he has demonstrated leadership, courage, and determination in the face of danger. His focus through his training raises the bar for many as one who completed the Paladin training under the Master Paladin Shima in a much shorter time than was necessary. Upon recommendation of his second and the Master Paladin, I am honored to give the title and duties to Kyoto Kitsune.” Tanis bowed to Kyoto who in turned returned the bow.

Shima stepped up, her arms wrapped through a breast plate much like she wore except fitted for him. “Kyoto, I am honored to have you among us. A may Alesia and the true Master Paladin Galinstra watch over you.”

Kyoto accepted the armor and she helped him put it on. An angel who's visage demanded respect and admiration as she was both beautiful and strong. Her presence made one look on in awe. The Angel had short black hair and armor much like he was given.

Her voice was soft yet commanding. “On behalf of the Angel Guardians, I welcome you among our ranks. Fighting to your last breath in the face of an enemy who's might may be above yours is a tradition that was started by the angel Kuromu.”

The name Kuromu struck something in his mind and heart, but he wasn't sure what.

“To put ones own desires aside so others may enjoy their lives peacefully is our curse and yet it is our blessing as heroes of are unselfish in their desires to protect go down in history as ones to be admired and followed. Children will want to be like you and soldiers will be inspired by you. Follow the principles that you have learned and go forth into the world and protect it using this weapon, the weapon of the Paladins.” Galinstra held out the sword.

Grabbing the sword, he felt power begin to course through him. It was something familiar. It wasn't like the other paladin swords, this one he could tell was different. He wanted to say something but instead said his deepest thanks and bowed.

“Then let Kyoto's name be added to the ranks of the Paladins and may he protect each and every child of this world with his heart.” Everyone cheered as Tanis ended the ceremony.

The breast plate was simply a symbol during the ceremony. It symbolized the protection he swore for the innocent and the sword though it made Kyoto wonder was a symbol for his courage as he fights for justice. The rest of the armor would be waiting for him in his room.

Galinstra stood by Alesia watching the boy who had become a man. “The resemblance is truly remarkable. But are you sure it's really him?”

“Don't you feel it? You were closest to him out of anyone. You embraced him when others made him an outcast. You fought along side him when no one else would. You took it the hardest when he left.” Alesia watched the woman beside her.

It was true, Galinstra was closest to him. “I do feel it, yet... there's something different, as if the boy before us is rejecting him. He lived when he should've died. If it really was him, he should've shown his true self by now.”

“He has, though not the way anyone had predicted. According to Belami and his sister, he had manifested a power that a mortal wouldn't be able to control normally.”

They watched as Kyoto talked with Shima and Bear who insisted he was there for the promotion. Sugao was away, eying Kyoto as if she didn't trust him.

“His sister notices a change in him. And if anyone knows who Kyoto really is, it would be her.” Galinstra left Alesia's side and went over to the sister.

Sugao looked up, she had been overwhelmed by the amount of angels here. She had never seen one and now she was surrounded by a dozen of them. She stood but Galinstra waved and signaled for her to sit.

Sugao looked a little uneasy. “I've always admired him as he always strove to exceed expectations.”

Galinstra nodded, “So I've been told, though you don't look to be too enthused.”

Sugao watched Kyoto a moment then looked down at her hands. “In every way he is my brother. His personality is the same, and even though we've gone through what we have he seems to have a positive outlook on things which was what he was like before. But something about him is darker still. It feels as though he is willing to die, or like he wants to die, but with what I've seen, he's survived where one would normally be sitting up with you guys in heaven.”

“You think he's changed on the inside?”

Sugao thought a moment and nodded, “Maybe his soul, I don't know. I just don't have the connection that I did before and that scares me.”

Galinstra nodded, “then maybe you should try to reconnect that connection. He still cares for you beyond anything anyone would think was sane. He left his men because he heard you were alive. He was ready to drop his entire future as a Paladin for you. And soon I will think that he'll need you more than ever. If what Alesia is saying, his destiny will not get any easier, and neither will yours. You will need each other.” She thought back to the debriefing about Zan 'Elel moving troops. “And I think it will be very soon.”

Soldiers surrounded Sakan, they had their swords drawn. He had tried to get into the palace but was blocked. Sakan found it amusing and instead of fighting back he decided to head towards the city square where he could make himself known among his children as they had obviously forgotten about him.

His arms raised as he called out, “My children, hear me out!”

A few bumped him as they walked by with words that showed him they weren't going to pay attention. Sakan let out an exaggerated sigh and the word “fine” left his lips. His hands balled into fists.

People began to stop and clear space as they saw armor begin to appear on him. Massive feathered wings extended knocking a few people over.

“Hear me out my children!” His voice was of anger this time. Several went to their knees and those he saw that didn't were killed instantly with a quick beam of energy that manifested out of his finger. “Apparently you have forgotten your God. You have forgotten your father, well I shall make myself known once more. I am you father, your God, Sakan! You have gotten weak, but we will remedy this quickly.”

Maruji watched from the shadows. The Angel in the center claiming to be Sakan had gathered quite a crowd which made it easier to be unnoticed. Blood will pour, he thought. He thought Malvis was mad, but where Malvis seemed to have fallen a much worst fate for the Ranvians had manifested. The world would be rocked and the pressure would tear the planet apart. Nothing would survive if the celestial civil war broke out here. Not if what he heard about the last one was true.

This he knew would drive the people together, the arrival of an angel claiming to be Sakan, the one who created them. Another war was brewing.

Chapter 15

Meriden pulled on the reigns of her horse. She signaled her troops to stop. Across the road was a body of a boy, his clothing was tattered and heavily dirty. They were only an hour from Alesia which was unusual to see a body lying on the ground. She got off and walked over, placing her hand on his back, she felt him breathing, though it was shallow.

“Let's get him in the cart and get him to Kormal Temple. He'll live though if we leave him here, he won't survive the night. Try to wake him up and get him some water.” Meriden stepped aside as a couple of men ran over and grabbed him. They moved him carefully to the cart and st him down.

Meriden got back on her horse and they were off again. After an hour they crossed the gates and moved off towards the nearest temple. Once they reached the smaller temple the Kormal clerics moved the boy inside. Meriden let out a breath of relief and moved out.

The tactical meeting ended, with the threat of war on the horizon by Malvis, they had to plan out their defenses. The city of Alesia was massive and therefore difficult to cove the entire wall that ran ten miles across. Kyoto was being assigned scout duty with their elite scouts. They would reach Zan 'Elel and access the situation. The city was much too small to house the entire force, but from what they knew, all the soldiers were being called there.

The door opened and a Cleric bowed. “I apologize for interrupting.”

Tanis stood, “Non-sense, the meeting is over. What can we do for you?”

“A boy was brought in. He was talking about a man who rose up from the ground who had angel wings.”

Everyone froze, if what the boy had said was true, it would mean that the threat was much more than anyone's assessment.

“Have him brought here, we must know everything,” said Alesia. She wasn't one to order things, but when she did, they obeyed. It wasn't like the goddess requested much.

The Cleric bowed and left to his chore. Everyone looked at one another. Tanis, Alesia, and Galinstra knew what this meant. If what the boy said was true, then the Demon lord, the betrayer of his siblings had returned. Karagma, or what he likes to be called now Sakan had risen. How they wondered, but that wasn't as important as how they were going to stop him. They almost didn't succeed last time.

The boy entered and the Clerics were dismissed. Several of the other Angels and commanders had arrived as well which made the room a bit more crowded. Tasuda realized he was younger than he was. The boy had been cleaned up and were given new clothing which he wore well. He knew the boy would grow up to be quite handsome.

They were about to start when the door opened again, a familiar figure entered in dark robes, the tattoos on his head were unmistakable, though Kyoto found it impossible that the man known as Tano would be allowed in here. And to make matters worst, he was being greeted by Alesia and Tanis as well as a few of the other commanders.

Kyoto's fists tightened and forgetting who were in the room screamed out in protest. “What the hell is he doing here!”

Everyone froze, the boy looked at Kyoto with wide eyes then realized it wasn't about him but the tattooed man who had been in the field with him. He was confused as well as this man should be dead. Tano only grinned.

Tanis was first to speak. “He was invited. As he helped end the last war, we found it made it more sense to have him here.”

Kyoto protested, his voice filled with anger and everyone feared he would try to cut down the illusionist. Either way, they would lose a powerful ally. “He's the one responsible for the death of my family! He nearly killed me!”

Tano nodded, “I apologize Kyoto, the death of your family was merely an illusion.”

Kyoto was speechless as well as the kid. The name Kyoto had come up around the dungeons in Zan 'Elel and before him was the one they spoke about. The monk who went to the armies of Alesia.

Alesia seeing Kyoto's hesitation spoke. “Kyoto, there are reasons which we will speak of. For now let us focus on the issue at hand.”

Kyoto sat down, not believing what he was being told. It sounded as if Alesia was in on it. Shaking his head he stood. “I apologize but I must go,” And without the dismissal of the emperor he left. The boy watched him go.

Kyoto slammed the door behind him and headed down the stairs then left. His hand was gripped tightly on the hilt of his sword. No way, it had to be a trick. He was tricking everyone. He saw his family, he saw his friends and his peers. He watched them die. He nearly died himself. He remembered the pain from the broken bones. No way could that have been an illusion. Also he had seen his temple when he was last there, it was empty and boarded up. He would've seen someone.

There was a sound of metal against marble, and as he looked down he saw a dagger. He looked to where it came from and a man was resting near the statue. One he recognized. The assassin who he had nearly lost his life to. What the hell is this he thought. Was everything his imagination? He drew his sword but the man didn't move.

“Put your weapon away Paladin. It's nice to see your skill were recognized. Not too often someone survives when crossing blades with me.” Maruji looked at Kyoto.

“Why are you here?” Kyoto was in no mood to take any more surprises.

“The one Tano who's currently in the room is not trustworthy.”

“No shit,” replied Kyoto.

“It's beyond what you think. Yes your family is dead. After our last meeting I searched for answers as to way a Marcian was a guard in Alesia. Tano killed them was was supposed to kill you. Obviously failed. You tend to have the nasty habit of living. I ran into him in Zan 'Elel. He was portraying Sakan to get King Malvis to do his bidding. I nearly paid with my life for finding that out. But apparently the real Sakan was resurrected at some point not to long ago. He was preaching to 'his children'.”

“Why are you telling me? Aren't you on Malvis's side?” asked Kyoto.

“No, they betrayed me. So me and my crew have disbanded. I was on the run for some time leaving a trail away from the others, then I moved to remove Malvis from the throne. I don't like war. Too messy and only the innocent are hurt. That's why I'm an assassin, or rather an ex-assassin now. My contracts are people who expect to have their life taken.”

Kyoto shook his head in disbelief. “Too bad we already know about Sakan.”

Maruji hopped down, “What you don't know is that Sakan has unlocked gates around the world and unleashing the creatures of hell. He is building an army of demons and he will march on Tai Jir first. They already know as well as Sahadra. They are preparing for the attack. Or at least should be if they listened to my message. But I don't think the elders there are dumb.”

“Then why don't you tell Tanis yourself?”

“Are you kidding? I guess the blond really does make one stupid. They would kill me on site.”

“And so you came to the one who probably could kill you.”

“Figured I'd stand a better chance in the open against one adversary than several angels, the Goddess and the emperor who is quite a capable fighter, as well as that boy.”

“What's so special about the boy,” questioned Kyoto.

“He has a power that can't be controlled. Pray that no one pisses him of-” They were cut short as there was a massive explosion. A hole appeared in the side of the tower. Based on the layout the hole was right where the meeting was taking place. “Damn, Tano must've pissed him off.”

The two ran into the building and up the flight of stairs. The door was removed. The boy stood, eyes wide and terrified. A couple of the commanders had died but everyone else seemed fine. Tano was gone.

“Wow, guess they are lucky,” said Maruji.

Kyoto, ignoring the remarks of the assassin, stepped forward to help Tanis to his feet. It looked as if he was struck by some debris but otherwise he looked to be fine. The quick reaction of the angels saved most everyone with little more than a few bumps and bruises.

“What happened,” asked Kyoto.

Tanis sat in a chair that was pulled up for him to sit in. “Tano...” Kyoto had thought Tano was the cause but he was wrong. “Tano had showed an image of the one who rose out of the ground. The boy started to scream then a wave of energy exploded around us with Tano at the head of the blast. He was thrown out the hole.”

Maruji stepped forward, “We saw no body.”

Tanis looked up, at first he didn't recognize him but then the memory hit him. How could he forget, the man was inhuman as far as his abilities to move were concerned. “What the hell is he doing here?”

Kyoto moved in front of Maruji to ward off any attacks. “He brought word, this boy's power is highly unstable. He was the key to opening the gate for Sakan to rise and Tano was the instigator.”

There was a thud, turning they saw the boy had collapsed. One of the angels moved to get him.

“Tano is playing all of us,” said Kyoto. “And if we don't stop him, this war will be hard fought as I don't think he's here to allow Sakan to win, nor us.”

Galinstra found she believed him, though not sure why. So she pushed the topic, “then what do you think is his goal?”

Kyoto shook his head, “I was told after the Ranvian war, he vanished.” Everyone nodded in agreement. “Perhaps whatever happened that day had changed him. Or perhaps it was the combined effects of his illusions. He needed to see more fear.” Looking at Alesia he said, “You sent him to create an illusion to draw me from home right?”

Alesia nodded though she felt horrible for it. “There is an exp-”

She was cut off as Kyoto continued. “I don't need to hear your reasons. Just know, the man you sent was evil beyond belief and he did kill my family. I was in Tai Jir, the place was boarded up tight. Kitsune temple is no more, you unleashed a demon without knowing the truth. He might've once been a hero, but heroes sacrifice something to protect everyone. He sacrificed his sanity to end the war. I think he fled to an isolated location because he knew what he was capable of. Then you sought him out and asked for his help. I think he is simply wanting to have a challenge. More people to kill and instill fear. Sakan was something to cause chaos.”

Galinstra couldn't believe what she was hearing, she was part of the plan. And Alesia was worst for hearing this. She looked as if she were going to fall apart. Many of the other angels looked at her with questioning glances and some looked on at her as if she betrayed them.

“Goddess, you may have meant well, but know this. I may be a Paladin, but I am a Paladin of the people and not you. You have caused the death of my family, and for that I cannot forgive you. But as my promises and my own morals keep me from joining Sakan, I will fight to defeat him.” Alesia saw something in his eyes, it was the same look that Karagma gave before he left. The look of one who felt betrayed.

Tanis sat back, he was as much involved as Kame was and any of the others involved. He moved to his knees, “Kyoto, I must admit, I was involved in this as well. Your family's blood is on my hands. I-I can't think of anything that could compensate you.”

Kyoto turned and left with Maruji falling closely behind. As they walked, Maruji caught up, “Hey, that was a bit cold. You and they need allies at this time. If there is mistrust among the ranks, your world will fall.”

“I will act as needed to save this city and the people even if I must hide my mistrust, but I cannot forget what they did, what they unleashed.”
