In the US there's Republicans/Conservatives who support the war in Iraq, and the Democrats/Liberals who wanted to quit the war a long time ago. Don't know how it is in the UK though-- I sometimes watch the questions for the Prime Minister in some channel |

We have an interesting Parliament at the moment. Normally, there are three major parties:Labour (left-wing, like Democrats), Conservatives/Tories (right-wing, like Republicans) and Liberal Democrats (or Lib Dems - center-left). The Lib Dem are significantly smaller than the other two but are still a major party. We've had a Labout governemnt for the past 12 years who were, initially, very popular. We'd just come out of a Conservative government who had previously been run by John Major and, before him, Margaret Thatcher. Over the last 2-3 years, Labour stated to become unpopular and when Gordon Brown because Prime Minister after Tony Blair resigned, support for Labour really decreased. At the same time, David Cameron became leader of the Conservatives and they gained a lot of popularity. Still, it would take a massive swing for the Tories to beat Labour in the election. In the election in June, we had a hung-parliament - no party had an overall majority. The Tories had the most seats, followed by Labour, then the Lib Dems. If the Tories formed a coalition with the Lib Dems, they would have a majority and would be able to form a government. If Labour formed a coalition with the Lib Dems, they would have to get a number of other smaller parties involved. This was a very important few days. The Lib Dems and Tories had always been very much opposed on a number of things. However, 5 days later, it was announced that they had formed a deal and that there would be a Conservative-Libe Dem coalition. A lot of Lib Dem supporters criticised this as they didn't want to have a right-wing party in power. We're now in a position where the Lib Dems have quickly lost support and the Tories are passing a lot of tory bills without any real Lib Dem influence. At the same time, Labour is soon to elect a new leader after Gordon Brown resigned after the election. |

David Cameron is Prime Minister because he is the leader of the Tories and the Tories are the bigger party in the coalition. I'm not happy about that. |
