Padawan Sunkisser

Sunkisser By SUGARBANTJINN Jedi Master Chukles and his 17 yr old Padawan, Sunkisser, sat around the campfire in the glowing twilight of Ragoon-6. They had come for a vacation, and a bit of wilderness training. Their first night the planet, it was still easy-going, but with a pair like Master Chukles and Padawan Sunkisser, adventure was a guarantee! Placing a puffy blue mushmallon on the end of a stick, the teenaged girl glanced across the fire at her master. Was it just the reflection of the flames, or was that a glint of mischief in his eyes? It could’ve been just the flickering shadows playing tricks on her eyes, but the ripple of amusement she felt through the Force confirmed that that was indeed a barely-contained smile on his face. -If he wished to share, he will- she told herself, slowly roasting her fluffy treat. But 3, and then 4 minutes passed, and not a word was said. And still he had that odd smile. Finally she gave up. “What are you thinking, Master?” she asked with an uncertain smile of her own. Letting out a short chuckle, that glint in his eyes got brighter as he answered, “I was just reminiscing… do you remember how you got the name ‘Sunkisser’? “ Tugging on her dirty-blond Padawan braid she rolled her eyes good-naturedly. “How could I forget? The sheer mortification of it seared it into my brain forever!” she exclaimed with a giggle. It had happened when she was 11. She had been in the map room, studying for a report she was assigned for her galactic geography and history class. She had pulled up the outer core and was working her way inward with the intent of finding a unique star-system. She had been so engrossed in her search that she wouldn’t even notice when another Jedi would enter, or leave the room, and, consequently, had adopted her ‘concentration face’ that she had been working so hard to rid herself of; it was a ridiculous expression with furrowed eyebrows and puckered lips. Her friends would always tease her, saying she looked like she was about to kiss something she was rather frustrated with! So completely engrossed that it took her a full two minutes to realize that Master Yoda was standing in the doorway, tapping his gimmer stick on the floor. Quickly she rose from the squat she had been in- a little quickly, in fact, for she somehow tripped on the hem of her robe. Arms pin wheeling, her datapad went flying and she landed on her stomach, just catching herself before she banged her chin into the floor. Dazed, it was a few seconds before she noticed she still had that idiotic look on her face. And what’s more, she had landed facing a binary system, her lips just touching the larger of the two stars, while the planets spun around her head. She could feel the heat radiating from her face, and knew she must be as red as Master Tii. Carefully she climbed to her feet. Turning towards the diminutive master, she realized he was not alone- Master Chukles was with him, wearing a barely-concealed grin, and holding her wayward datapad in an outstretched hand. Bowing to each one in turn, she said softly, “Thankyou for catching my datapad, mater Chukles.” She accepted it from his hand and stepped back, humbly awaiting the reprimand she was sure would come. Master Yoda was the first to speak, but not the words she was expecting to hear. “Found padawan Junna-Lee we have, it seems, Master Chukles,” and laughed his soft, gravelly laugh. Then to her he said, “Looking for a padawan Master Chukles has been. Watching you he has been as well. Impressed with your skill and,” his next word was totally poised, but there was a sparkle of humor in his big green eyes, “grace with the lightsaber, as well as your knowledge and grasp of the Force he is. Master Chukles?” and Master Yoda stepped back. Clearing his throat and schooling his features to a serious face, but smiling invitingly, he began. “As the Master said, I have been keeping an eye on you, and have been very impressed! I was wondering if you would be interested in training under me as my Padawan learner?” Junna-Lees’ eyes were wide, as they had been for moments now,. Her excitement was almost tangible, but she strictly reigned it in and carefully bowed, her clumsiness still not forgotten. “It would be an honor, Master,” she said, kneeling and bowing her head, as she’d seen other padawans do when being chosen. Master Chukles grinned and placed a hand on her shoulder. Throwing a secret smile to Master Yoda, and a conspiratorial wink at his new Padawan, he said with great grandeur, “Then, I hereby dub you….Padawan…Sunkisser!” Junna-Lee jerked her head up to see both masters smiling and Master Chukles open arms. Relief coursed through her and bubbled out in uncontainable giggles as she rose and stepped into his offered hug. Leaving the maps behind, the laughter of the three Jedi echoed in the vacated room and preceded them down the hall. The End This was an assignment for the New Jedi Trials from my Master, Chukles. A note to Master Chukles, I appologize for it being so colorless, but this forum doesn't have the same capabilities as the ones at TF.N. the one for you to grade is there. :) feedback is welcome! |
