Well, we all know that we haven't always been amazing RPers, some of us still aren't (like me). I know that, as time progresses, and we continue to RP, we definitely improve. I know I certainly have. In the span of one year, I went from some of the worst posts to winning Best RPer. So, post one of your old/first posts and post one of your newer ones under it so we can all laugh...I mean compare and praise you for your improvement. :D Here's mine:
- me from 5/19/04

Master John entered the combat training room to view the young padawans training. He then asked "Master Renn-Bar what are they doing, this is forbidden. This could lead to anger between them, and that could lead them to the dark side."

IC: Vic Horkin ~The Graylands~
[blockquote]Vic stood with three of his Jedi companions. He knew them all, but had barely spoken to them all, expect for Kimara Odon, a near-human from Arkania who he had known for several years now, since she was just a youngster. She was a great Jedi, but was often impatient, which is a major downfall for Jedi. He liked to consider himself a sort of mentor to her since he was older than her. He was also older than Kara Dysar, who was also another near-human species. He was not quite sure where exactly she was from, but she was a Zeltron from Zeltros. He took a liking to her because of her skin tone, which was pink. His liking could also be caused by her pheromones that she could release. He had yet to come across those, but he most certainly would. Vic was not, however, older than Anengy Facefoot. She, too, was not human. He felt out of place with these three near human females. But, that would not stop him from completing his mission.
The Jedi Knight, who was walking around the still smoldering ashes of the house from which the Moff had lived. Vic could sense the death that had occurred hear through the Force, their echoes screaming out in pain. The Dark Side was mixed in with the anguish that flowed through the Force. It all brought a chill to his back. The feeling was so dark, and brought him such unhappiness, it was as if nothing in the entire galaxy could bring a smile to his face. In fact, he could not even remember how to smile.
"Masters?" came a voice from behind Vic. It was a human female that came forward. Her name was Callo Merlose. She bowed with respect to the Jedi around her. "I'm a Valendian Peacekeeper- we enforce the law in the region. I feel sorry that we could not deal with this matter on our own. With the arrival of the Empire's Knights and now yourselves, it seems that things have moved out of our hands. Nevertheless, I am happy to help you if you have any questions before you head to the city ruins."
Anegny responded first. She asked of the bounty hunter who the Jedi Council had briefed them on, Jan Rosencrantz. Then Kara asked if there was more than one entrance into Leá Monde. According to the Jedi Council's briefing, the only entrance was through the mine shafts. Vic nodded, realizing that Kara had come to the obvious conclusion that the mine shaft would be very, very difficult to pass through, just because it was a mine shaft, not to mention the fact that the group of Sith knew that someone was going to come for them. Since that was the only way in, they would most likely do something to the mine shaft. Perhaps they would set traps, put some Sith alchemy within it or even collapse the mine shaft all together.
Callo responded that the only known bounty hunter on the case was, in fact, Rosencrantz. "He has not been in contact with us. He simply announced that he would find the child. Our records indicate that his ship has visited Valendia on a number of previous occasions, though we do not know why." So this Rosencrantz was serious about this. Vic did not mind it, another being with the same cause could be of some use in obtaining the boy, and that was really all that Vic cared about. Though, Rosencranrz was not the only other person trying to obtain the boy; the Imperial Knights were as well. This could become very, very confusing, and possibly deadly, if they all met up at once. There was always the possibility that one of these others would fail, and Joshua would be killed. That would not be acceptable.
Callo also confirmed the Jedi Council's briefing that there was only one entrance...through the mines. "And even that route is not entirely safe. It is populated by wild creatures. The last time we sent someone to the city was ten years ago- they did not return."
"That's not to mention," said Vic, "what kind of defenses, traps, magic or what not that the Sith most definitely put into place so as to not be bothered by saviors." Vic shook his head lightly. A thought came to mind. "This may seem like a strange request, seeing as the destruction of Leá Monde occurred a century ago, but are there any known survivors still around these parts?" He, of course, referred to any of those species that could live for many more years than humans could. These survivors, if there were any, could give them a detailed description of the city. Of course, such a description would be outdated but it could prove to be heplful.[/blockquote]

OOC: A little different than I'm used to, but I'll adapt.
IC: Aaron
Aaron heard the announcement and stood up from the cahir he ahd been sititng in. He walked over ot his desk, clipped on his lightsaber, pulled his grey cloak around him, and made his way to the hanger bay. As he entered the hanger bay, he saw Xanatos II climbing into an A-wing. Aaron climbed into his own green and black A-wing and strapped himself in. He sat anxiously as the docking bay doors slowly opened, and he started up his engines.

OOC: alright, I guess I'll go ahead and post for my Mandalorian too, going back in time a little.
IC: Vance
Vance fidgeted in his armor. It wasn't fitting right and it was bothering him. he needed to get it fixed. He looked at his general and said, "General, my squad is ready for combat." His voice sounded cold and lifeless through the filters in his helmet.

"It's not quite fitting right. I need to have it fixed. I think it's dented or something underneath. I'll take care of it."

"Have a scout sent out."
Second in command: "Yes sir."

IC: Darth Solus
Solus stood and moved over to the window behind him, not caring for a response from any of the Masters. So far the meeting had progressed in a manner pleasing to Solus. He smiled to himself, his back to the others. And then, his spirits were dampened slightly.
All in the upper room had a shared vision. Blasters fired, red lgihtsabers blurred through the air, defending against the blasts. other lgihtsaber entered the fray. Panic was abounding. Images flashed by. It was vague. but left little doubt of it's meaning. The team in the underlevels was in danger.
Curse it. Things had been going so well. Solus did not need for this to be happening. Without turning, Solus slowly gained his composure. He ran a hand through his hair, and then pulled his hood over his face. He rested his left hand on his saber hilt surreptitiously. He needed to be the first one there. In a calm controlled voice, Solus spoke.
"My friends. It seems that our underlings need us. I suppose this meeting has run its course." With that, Solus whipped out his saber, igniting it. He slashed the window and with a force push from his right hand sent the transparisteel flying to the street below. Hardly pausing, he leapt from the window. This was the quickest way he could think to get there before the rest.
He feel, using the force to slow and direct it. He leapt off of speeders, ledges, and anything else passing by to slow his fall. After an eternity of falling and maneuvering with the force, Solus landed heavily on the ground of the underlevels of Coruscant. Without pausing, he burst into a run, using the force to speed him beyond any pace that any normal being could achieve. The team should not be far. Solus stretched out and found...... strangely, nothing. Only one Sith. He burst forward, honing in on that one presence within the Force.

lol... Let's see what I can find.
This was my first ever RPing post (it was in a game we played as socks, which is why it doesn't show up under my username):
- Me 11 Jan 03
-
I thread my way through the city streets, heading for the city centre. I make sure that Kija is at my side, since getting separated would be a problem - and in the crowded streets, it's entirely possible.
First things first. Making sure that we aren't being followed, I stroll into a small inn at the street corner and set about obtaining rooms for the both of us. After all, we'll be here fora week, and I don't want to have to sleep on a street corner.
My first ever post as, er, me was similarly woeful:
- Me 10 Feb 03
-
Krasus weighs the lightsaber in his hand, then ignites it. Grasping the hilt with both hands, he blocks the blows. Feeling slightly more confident, he takes a step to the side and raises the saber to block any further blows.
And then now (not my latest post, but a recent-ish one I'm reasonably happy with):
- Me 28 Mar 08
-
IC: Kara Dysar
Mineshaft
This section of the shaft would have been unremarkable had it not been carpeted in corpses. Kara nearly tripped over the first one they came across, but the quartet of Jedi continued through steadily, picking their footsteps with care.
Then, without warning, the swirling darkness around them seemed to abruptly thicken, flooding through the air and the Force. Caught off guard by the combined assault of the dark side and claustrophobia and panic, Kara staggered, her lightsaber wavering dangerously - frantically she tried to close her mind -
You will die here
We all die here
The Dark is everywhere
No! Kara clutched her head with her free hand, for the lot of good it would do. This was definitely a situation where natural emphatic ability was a very bad thing to have. Dimly, she registered that Vic had called out something, that Kimara had snarled a reply, that there was movement at her feet - movement? Something grabbed at her leg, clawing at her with surprising force. Instinctively, Kara lashed out with her lightsaber, catching that - thing - on the shoulder and shearing through.
Another slammed into her back, and this time Kara nearly went down. The Jedi Knight spun and slashed again. By now she had the darkness at bay and she could think again. And her mind finally registered that they weren't under attack by just anything - they were the very corpses that they had been stepping over.
Around her, the other Jedi were fighting as well. The corpses were everywhere, animated by some dark sorcery that kept them moving through what should have been fatal damage -
"Move!" Vic yelled. Kara, having arrived at the conclusion that they were dead if they stayed put, had no problems with that plan. Stabbing at the corpse that had tried to grab her arm, Kara shook it off and did her best to run forward, cutting through the undead in her way.

Actually, I'll post a bit of analysis of my own RPing-through-the-ages (because I have a report to write, so naturally I'm procrastinating):
When I started, obviously I was writing in first-person present-tense, because that was the way the game was set up - as we played as socks first person was logical, and the GM was posting in present tense so we all just followed. When I joined the original BoP I'd figured out that writing in third person was the way to go, but I didn't clue in about writing in past tense until a few posts later. Tags I remember having to ask about (although for some reason, I can't find the post where I asked), but I was using them regularly after a week... so I'd say I picked up the basic ropes fairly quickly.
The IC: <character name> thing I didn't start doing until June 03 when I created my second BoP character, but in my defence it wasn't actually standard practice back then. People typically posted their character's location, but only the people running multiple characters tacked on the name at the top (which makes sense when you think about it, although it's great that it's become standard practice, story arcs are easier to follow).
Mmm... what else ... quite aside from the fact that reading my old crap makes me cringe :p for some reason within a few posts I started bolding character names in my posts and italicising quoted speech. Not sure where I picked up either, although I dropped the bolding thing not long after, I think. It's interesting to see the length of my posts as well - I started out with really craptastically short posts with little to no depth in them, then progressed to page-long essays on my character's Deep Internal Thoughts On Moving Three Steps, to oscillating somewhere in between.
... I'll stop now. :p If anyone wants to do the same (for my posts or their own), I think that would be an interesting exercise.

I will do so later on as well, but I just want to mention something. You point out that you use to write in first person and then you figured out that third was teh way to go. I am not sure I agree with you. I mean, I write in third person, but I've also written in first person, and that was a couple years after I started. I found it quite exciting and more challenging for me to write in first person. It seemed more interesting to me. I stopped because no one else did it and I felt out of place, but I find myself wanting to do it more and more...especially after I read Chuck Palahniuk books. :p
If I can, I will find one of my posts when I was writing in first person.

Mm, I get what you mean, but I think third person makes RP posts easier to follow. It means that the character name is mentioned multiple times in the post - "Bob did such-and-such" rather than "I did such-and-such" - that sort of thing. For longer posts especially when you might have scrolled past the IC: declaration, it might make things clearer... or something.
I think I write more naturally in first person, actually, but nowadays I've gotten used to third I guess. I don't find it any more .. exciting, or engaging, or even more personal (from a character POV) to write in first opposed to third, though ... I've sometimes drafted posts in first person and then converted them to third before posting, with minimal editing.

My first post in my first ever post-to-play RPG. I still role-play there, but not often, so that I can stay active on TF.N.
- Quote:
-
The Cathedral of Da'ala, Saridyn Cloud stood up, his body still shaking from his Bal Kar (Divine Vision or Divine Prophecy) He stumbled forward, and tripped on his scimitar.
He kneeled down before the grand statue of Da'ala, godess of Truth. He picked up his sword and sheathed it. He touched his bruises gingerely and decided they were of no worries.
He only had to worry about how to approach Him. The one revered by his forefathers. His village's protector.
The Protector was in the city, if his Bal Kar was to be taken in the Truth of Da'ala. Cloud had seen him, offering his services to a woman that had been found fallen into a fountain.
He had to find Him. He had no other choice...
And a more recent post, in Nick's 'Genocide' RP:
- Quote:
-
Of Naer the Shy on Corbos
As Naer finished his drink, savoring the cooling of his troat after the fiery spices of the upper portion of the beverage, the Ithorian finally got to the point, and made his job that much easier...
If the Rodian could have smiled as a human, he would have; the Ithorian not only tried to sound calm, but look calm as well... and achieve neither. To an untrained eye, she would have looked like a gangster off of the B-Vid Nar Shaddaa Crime holos. Which was laughable in itself; Naer was a... businessman, to put it lightly. But he was no gangster.
However, the simple fact that she had to try - for her could tell she was having to concentrate on staying calm - made her seem all the more vulnerable. But Naer had learned the hard way not to underestimate anyone... especially politicians.
"I don't just think I can do better; I know I can. I have," and he held out his hands to demonstrate, "the entire sector under my influence. And I have for a good while; I'm sure you've noticed something awry in your neighboring systems."
He proceeded to clasp his hands, place his elbows on the table, arms vertical, and look straight-faced at the Ithorian.
"I have a healthy number of smugglers ready to take peice of the fabled 'Corbos Run.' And they're willing to pay just about anything to get in on the action. I propose-" Naer leaned back in the booth, ready to leave as soon as he finished, for something was surely about to happen; as a Human would say, he could feel it in his gut, "that you get a cut of he deal, if you help me get things started. Say, thirty percent of my profits, right into your pockets."
Not waiting for a reply, he stood up and slid a business card over to Robyn, saying, "If you accept, contact me at this number. I'm staying in-system for a few days, but be quick, please..."
At that, he finally saw what had been eating at him; three Weequay Bounty Hunters were slowly converging on his location, taking the long way around the patrons and service 'droids, trying not to act suspicious. Not that he couldn't take on three Weequay blindfolded and both hands behind his back, but he couldn't risk an encounter somewhere so public.
It was then that he noticed they were definately amateurs; his best escape route, the front door, was clear away from the three Bounty Hunters. Too easy.
Slowly, he picked his way through the crowd, once elicitng the agitated, feral growl of a Wookiee, and quickly made it to the front door. As he went through the door, he began to bolt through the semi-crowded walkways. It was then he realized his folly, as a sniper bolt came dangerously close to his person. The sight caused a good bit of commotion, making things much more difficult to navigate through.
However, not another shot was fired in his direction, even as he boarded an open-air skytaxi.
* * *
300 Astalair Hotel, Room 312
Naer kicked aside the litter in his apartment. He hadn't left his place of residence in such disarray; someone had been here, looking for him. That much was obvious. But who, he could never be sure. There were hundreds of beings who had put bounties on his head, and hundreds more looking for him. Good luck to them; hewasn't easy to kill.
As he shifted through his disaster of an apartment, he noticed a piece of paper pinned to the wall. He looked at it closely trying to read the miniscule writing.
"If," he began to read aloud, "you are reading this, then my compatriots didn't get to you in time. In which case, I do believe you should start running; I'm watching you. Signed... Vanheart the Ruthless." Recognition clicked; Vanheart was his former Black Sun contact. Then realization finally set in as the words from the note seeped in... and as he saw muzzle flash from the building across the airlane.
He dove for cover, landing painfully on a sharp object- his blaster rifle, he realized, as he picked it up from underneath him. He checked the pack; it was at near-full power. He was set-and-ready to hold out, until the local police force came. If he didn't, they would only find a messy room and a blood stain or two.
He could hear heavy footsteps outside the room, but it would take a minute for them to properly slice his locking mechanism. in that short span of time, he pushed the citizen's emergency button on the wall behind him. Better to explain why I'm on the hit list of a pirate than be dead, he thought as the door slowly began to open...

Of Trasii Yelnar on Ossus
As the Grandmaster ate of the fruit of the tree, Trasii wanted to yell out, not in rage, but in joy. She had finally been assigned a new master, and, thankfully, a healer! Not caring that her eyes would betray her inner joy, not caring that Metellos was just as bad as Corsucant, not caring - rather, remembering - that her first master was gone, she bowed, a little too hastily, with respect to the Grandmaster, and said, "Thank you, Grandmaster Donn."
Forgetting that the Grandmaster had not exactly dismissed her, she hurriedly went off to her quarters to pack her things...
* * *
Onboard Jedi Transport 361784 AKA "Skyhawk"
The view of Metellos was breathtaking, just like Corsucant. Despite its lack of natural water formations, its floating cities held such splendor and magnificence that, for the moment, Trasii didn't much care. She had taken a long, soothing bath, and only got out whe the pilot came over the ship's comm, saying they were exiting Hyperspace. Her skin was no longer as dry as it had been on Ossus, but no doubt it would get worse on the urban planet.
The pilot, who she was standing behind, began standard procedures; she had noticed already that he was very quick and efficient in everything he did, even when it came to eating meals, which there had been two of since she had come aboard. But, she had also found out, he had a very active sense of humor.
"Ektra City Air Traffic Control, this is Jedi Transport Skyhawk, requesting vector and destination. Over."
"Ektra City Air Traffic Control here. Copy that, Skyhawk. Sending vector and destination. Your temporary registration number is 55276. Repeat. Over," came the reply, filtered with thec noise of transmission through a smog-filled atmosphere.
The pilot grinned, despite himself, and looked up at the Mon Calimari youth, mouthing, Stiffs.
"Repeat, number is 55276. Over."
"Good. Everything checks out... Ektra City Air Traffic Control, over and out."
The pilot flipped off the comm switch and sat back, letting autonav take care of the easy landing. Typical transport pilot behavior.
Moments later, the transport was landed and the young Mon Calimari was walking towards the innards of the city; hopefully, the buildings had air ducts, for the atmosphere nearly made her choke.
She felt a 'shockwave' of air as the transport lifted off and began its return trip to Ossus.
Now, she just needed to find Master Agar...

"i guess ill have to find out on my own since no vampires or werewolfs have come to greet me" Jaden skates down the street casually looking around.

Here's my first ever RP post at TFN
IC: Ki-Adi-Mundi
Ki-Adi-Mundi attempted to fly the large clone transport. What has happened?, the Jedi Master thought to himself. How did I get in this predicament? Why did the troops turn on me? How will I survive this? He tried to get the uncertain thoughts from his mind as he tried to set the large transport down in, what he believed, was unsettled tertain. After a slightly rocky landing, the Jedi left the cockpit to go to the transmission device, in hopes that he could contact some other Jedi Master to answer some questions ... unless, the same thing happened to other Jedi, and they hadn't been so successful at fighting off the hordes of Clone troopers as he had been ... No! He wouldn't even allow himself to consider the thought. Clearly the will of the Force would not allow it. He approached the R4 unit on the transport.
"R4", he began "Send this transmission to Master Windu on Coruscant, Master Kenobi's ship and Master Yoda on Kashyyk. Greetings masters. Something unusual has happened. My clonetroopers have turned against me. I was able to fight off the unit and escape on their transport to a remote cave on the same planet. However, I do not know if I will be able to pilot this transport off the planet, and the droid army of the Seperatists remains on this planet, and eventually, I have no doubt they will track me. Please contact me as soon as possible. I will meditate in this cave and remain on Mygeeto while I wait for your response!"
Ki-Adi-Mundi left the transport into the dark, damp cave, hoping that he would one day leave Mygeeto.

It was called "Forked Destiny" ... the GM wasn't very good, and didn't do a great job of following through with any of his plot or driving it forward. I ended up with a whopping four posts in four days (including my CS) before he closed it.
And most people spell Kashyyyk wrong. :p

Oh, I've been in a couple of those games.
Yes, most people do. :p
A new topic...going off what Inty just posted. What was the first major game you were involved in? Mine was one called "The Meaning of Jedi" which was very popular. If I remember right, it got over 1,000 posts from no more than 6 active players, including myself. The story line was pretty cool. It had two reincarnations. The second one did well, IIRC, but the third kind of died out really quickly.

I was fortunate in that the first game I ever joined (well, as myself) was Balance of Power. Pure luck the way that turned out - I posted in the RPF Introduction Service thread that I was a newbie looking for a game, and one of the players (stradman - who's no longer active, and indeed I never had any contact with beyond "Hey, check out this game...") PMed me and told me to check out BoP.

Wow...that's one hell of a starting RPG. :p I wasn't around for the original BoP however...was it as large as the IBoP?

Hm. Good question actually. Not as large as IBOP, no (although obviously, towards the end it got quite close), but with the same number of factions - just less players per faction, and less player control over factions for that matter.

First major one I got involved in was Hammer's Jurrassic Park IV game. That was cool. First major one that I was a major part of was Podracer, also from Hammer. Loved that game, loved my character in that game, and I'm still mad that I didn't have enough time to play the sequel game properly.

Yeah...still must have been a great experience for a first timer...I do remember IBoP when I was first starting out. In fact, you were my GM for my Sith character! :D
Those podracer games were amazing. I was a part of the second one for a while, and enjoyed it a lot. I was able to get my character into the Championship race and then was forced to leave the boards due to time restrictions. :( I was upset.
