While many subscribe to the Literary and Drawing/Painting Arts, I prefer something a little more... logic-oriented. While still being creative! Video Game Programming! I'm sure just about every little boy has dreamed of making his/her own video games, but time wanes the young one's interest in such activity. However, that was not the case with me. Halfway through the 2005-2006 school year, I began my search for an easy way to make my own video games... To learen there is none. So, I took up the easiest thing I could find; Game Maker. Back then, 6.0 was the newest and, of course, best version out there. So I downloaded it, read the tutorials online, and the rest is, as they say, history. My current project is entitled 'Final Fantasy Z.' Yes, I know, it seems so cheesy, but there is a reason for this other than 'Ooh, Z is a cool letter' or 'Final Fantasy is so awesome... Why not make this the last Final Fantasy and name it 'Z' cuz that's the last letter in the alphabet.' Reason #1: The Final Fantasy title simply appeals to people. Reason #2: The game's plot is truly the 'Final Fantasy' of the world it takes place in. After the end, it's simply no longer of the Fantasy genre. Reason #3: 'Z.' This ties in heavily with the plot and a mysterious substance known as Z-Particles, named so due to their Z-shaped atomic structure (A giant leap of faith I took here). The plot is still majorly in development, but a lot of the superficial stuff has, strangely enough, been consistantly ahead of schedule. And that's not a bad thing. :D In case you're wondering, the game is being primarily developed by myself, but I've allowed the rights to be accredited to the Video Game company (A part of my multimedia company, Resistance Interactive, until they broke away when I handed over control to my 'second-in-commad.' We allowed them to hold onto the name, however.) I founded all those years prior when I first downloaded Game Maker. I'm still credited as Project Supervisor, though obviously labeled as a Third Party contributor in the credits. We don't have an official webpage yet, (In fact, Resistance Interactive still doesn't; we all communicate via Video-Conferencing) but we already have a steady fan base... well, if you count relatives and friends as a fan base. :p Now, onto the game itself: The only completed portions, and these are constantly subject to change, are the Main and Start Game Menus. Everything else is under heavy development, or hasn't been started, due to the fluxuating state of the plot... Or, rather, lack of it. Just to showoff what we've got done so far, I've taken a screenshot of the Start Menu (the file is attached to this post)... and yes, those are Imperial Guards. :p In this thread, it is okay to: 1) Offer constructive criticism as I show the team's continual progress. 2) Give ideas here and there. 3) Debate (in a controlled manner) with your fellows. 4) Read. 5) Worship me. :D 6) Post fan art... Though that might be a while, with the lack of shown graphics. It is not okay to: 1) Flame, troll, flamebait, intensely argue, or otherwise harm/attack a fellow. 2) Do anything that the TOS forbids. 3) SPAM. 4) Masqerade as a member of Resistance Games or Resistance Interactive. 5) Be a lawyer. It's just not cool. :p 6) Pretend to be Virgil and thus yell, "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!" a lot. Trust me; you'll see once development is far enough along. It's an inside joke. ;) I will update periodically, and respond to any questions/comments left in this thread. Edited by Burning_Endor, Apr 10 2008, 05:25 PM.

Good thing Saint's not over on these boards, then? :p Edit - Seriously though, that's awesome. I always wanted to do game programming. Edited by Xany, Apr 10 2008, 11:13 PM.

Wow man, that is really cool. I am actually thinking about getting a degree that will allow me to get into video game design, but I am not sure....Choosing a major in college is really hard. :p Anyway, keep us updated! :D |

Nick: :D Xany: I'll remember not to draw attention to this then, when I'm around St. Modheart. :p As for programming; if you want a way to do click'n'add game creating either buy the 3D Game Maker (Totally different program an unrelated to Game Maker) or RPG Maker VX (For Vista) or XP (for XP). Even better, if you've a good enough computer, buy FPS Creator XI (Vista-only). Amazing visuals there. But all of that's for people who can't/don't want to learn a programming language. Nemisis: Best advice: Follow your dreams. If you want to get into Game Design, go ahead; its not a job that can be (easily) exported to other countries. If you want to be whatever it is you've taken classes for in HS, and if you want to do that, then do that. I'm going to post an update right now, in fact. Update: Well, it may not seem like much, but it is. The menu has had a slight coding overhaul: #1: A pleasant, sci-fi'ish beep plays upon pressing enter on the Start Menu (See previous update) #2: 'New Game' and 'Load Game' enlarge themselves when the mouse hovers on it, then goes back to its normal size when it leaves. (See Before&After pictures attached) #3: The coding is a bit more streamlined, so it runs faster. (From eighty FPS to eight-two FPS. :p In case you don't know, FPS stands for Frames Per Second. For something low-key like this, that's pretty good.) Also, the complex coders are having a bit of trouble getting the sprite paths to work, so I think we'll be abandoning the opening cinematic and replace it with scrolling text. Just a little information on the side. Also, the gameplay window tab on the bottom displays it as 'Final fantasy z' and, for some reason we can't get it to capitalize properly. Attached to the next post (Won't let me add any more files :( ) is the menu music, dubbed the FFZ Theme by the coders. A free cookie if you know where it's from. Note that neither picture show the mouse; its because of the way the Print Screen function works; just believe me when I say its on the bottom-right corner of New Game in the After pic. The enlarged "New Game" seems a bit more blurry than the original - perhaps a glowy effect instead? Yeah, I'd rather learn how to code it than buy tools, I think. I knew a guy last year who was studying game programming - he did lots of stuff with OpenGL and stuff, it was pretty neat. |

Xany: I believe it was supposed to be that way; however, the screenshot is a little messed up anyway. I blame my computer. :p If you want an easy language to learn to code, definately use Game Maker. Edited by Burning_Endor, Apr 13 2008, 01:06 PM.

Then learn C++. I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole. And I enjoy programming myself... but I have horrid memory, so it gets hard to recall the functions I should have memorized by now. |
