This forum looks rather ... empty ... so I thought I'd make a thread. :p Like the title says, what kind of RPs do you like to play? There are many 'general' types of games on the RPF ... the very crafted I_H-type things where there's a system for postings, the sandbox-type where the GM is an arbiter more than anything else, the 'adventure' type like DnD where it's players vs. the GM's NPCs, the faction-based kind, combinations thereof, etc etc ... which type is your favourite? Why? |

Well, I like all types of RPs really. I like I_H style RPG's, because he makes some really, really good RPGs that are just fun to play. Personally, I think Winged_Jedi is one of the best GMs...I've always loved his RPGs, and LeĆ” Monde is very good which goes in favor of my view. What about you Xany? You posted without giving your favorite! :p |

Oh. Right. Sorry. :p Mmm, I think ... My favourite type of game is the long-term plot-driven kind, where there's a story arc that unfolds and space/time for character development along the way as well. Nothing beats the kind of game where it starts out with five or six scenarios that seem completely separate at the start, but they all come together at the end like pieces of a puzzle. The 'adventure' kind like Lea Monde or DnD comes a close second because, as above, they've got a compelling plot and it's fantastic to see it unfold. (And Saint and WJ are fantastic GMs, which helps. A lot. *nods*) I tend to like the "sandbox" type the least because usually it's character-driven rather than plot-driven - there's nothing wrong with that but it's just less interesting, IMO. Sandboxes with an overarching plot (like IBOP was) are fantastic, though, but I haven't seen that done again since. ... In a nutshell, I am addicted to plot. :p I actually haven't played in I_H's type of games enough to say much about them - I mean, yes I'm in Senate, but my character is a bodyguard with all the depth of cardboard, and my biggest challenge is making interesting posts. :doh!: Edited by Xany, Apr 4 2008, 10:57 AM.

Yeah, I like what you have described. Though, I would say that the majority of games are never finished to where you can actually fit the pieces of the puzzle together. Often times, they die out before that can happen due to lack of interest, or just because the GM has no time. |

Yeah, but you can't really complain. I mean, RL does that to you. I know personally. :( |

Well, yes, me too. I've disappeared before, much to my regret later, but no help for it now. :( It really illustrates though how much depends on the GM ... games die when the GM disappears, or when he/she can't hold the attention of the players. Good GMing can make or break the game. ... which would be why I prefer to just RP. :p |

That's a good point. Yeah, I don't GM because of several reasons: 1.) None of my attempts have been that successful 2.) I feel like I don't have the talent to do so. 3.) I know I don't have the time to do so. 4.) I don't want that much pressure put on me. :p |

Hm. I too like plot driven RP's. I hate totally open RP's tht start out, "You're somehwere doing something. Mroe to come later" I ifnd that it is too rambling and not as entertaining. |

I usually just play in games with interesting topics. I don't really worry about the styles or anything. |

That's actually an interesting thing. I don't think I have ever joined a game purely on the strength of its topic ... it's usually when I'm convinced the GM actually has something going. Not sure if that's a good thing or not. |

Yeah, I at least tend to read the opening post. If I do not like the story, I won't join. At times, I will not join a game simply because of the GM. If it is a "n00b" GM, I usually do not join because they often do not know what they are doing. That is not always the case, however. |

Nemisis: 'Usually.' I was a sort-of 'n00b' back on TF.N, with a recent join date, but I wasn't gung-ho, like other 'n00bs.' I payed attention. As for what I enjoy... Good plot and a neat set-up in the first post. Sandbox games appeal to me as an RPer, but Plot-centric games appeal to me as a GM and Game Designer. It depends on one's PoV, I guess. |

Actually, I was thinking about referring to you. I was going to say "That is not always the case, however, such as Burning_endor with his RP, a Galaxy at War." I thought that was an interesting game and even though you had a recent reg date, I could tell you had experience, so I joined. Unfortunately, I had to quit because of time restraints. :( |

That would have been okay by me. :) And that's fine; however, Jedi_of_Darkness and Darth_Allana quit as well. Too many key players dropping out forced me to close it down. |

*wince* I meant to create a character for that game, actually, but a slew of deadlines smacked me in the face and then the game started. |

I think I might've even PMed you asking about it - if it's the game I'm thinking of, anyway. But yeah, on the subject of new GMs, IMO there's a difference between noobs and newbies. Someone who's new but bothers to read and put some effort into it = newbie. Someone who doesn't = noob. Newbies should be encouraged and nurtured, noobs should DIAF. ;) |

Ehh... I'm on the fence about that, actually. It's one thing to be a good RPer and an entirely different matter to be a good GM. I've seen great RPers railroad horribly as GMs, for example, or just update so slowly that people lose interest in the game. *shrug* |
