Actually, I'll post a bit of analysis of my own RPing-through-the-ages (because I have a report to write, so naturally I'm procrastinating): When I started, obviously I was writing in first-person present-tense, because that was the way the game was set up - as we played as socks first person was logical, and the GM was posting in present tense so we all just followed. When I joined the original BoP I'd figured out that writing in third person was the way to go, but I didn't clue in about writing in past tense until a few posts later. Tags I remember having to ask about (although for some reason, I can't find the post where I asked), but I was using them regularly after a week... so I'd say I picked up the basic ropes fairly quickly. The IC: <character name> thing I didn't start doing until June 03 when I created my second BoP character, but in my defence it wasn't actually standard practice back then. People typically posted their character's location, but only the people running multiple characters tacked on the name at the top (which makes sense when you think about it, although it's great that it's become standard practice, story arcs are easier to follow). Mmm... what else ... quite aside from the fact that reading my old crap makes me cringe :p for some reason within a few posts I started bolding character names in my posts and italicising quoted speech. Not sure where I picked up either, although I dropped the bolding thing not long after, I think. It's interesting to see the length of my posts as well - I started out with really craptastically short posts with little to no depth in them, then progressed to page-long essays on my character's Deep Internal Thoughts On Moving Three Steps, to oscillating somewhere in between. ... I'll stop now. :p If anyone wants to do the same (for my posts or their own), I think that would be an interesting exercise. |
