There have been billions of "which Trek Captain was the best?" threads, but this one isn't necessarily about that.

This is a fictional "Evaluation" for four of the Captains (I won't do Archer, as he sucks in every possible way, and is, therefore, not worth the time); I will give number grades to each character based on several different aspects. Each attribute is graded on a 1-10 scale (with 1 being the worst, and 10 being the best).

These are just my opinions of each Captain's "skill set"; I'm sure most people will give different grades in different areas.

Here we go:

James Kirk:
Charisma: 10. Kirk has an overpowering presence, which is undeniable. No matter what kind of creature he faces, he commands attention. He just has a way about him, that makes people want to be around him, to listen to him, even to join him.
Technical Skill: 5. A weakness. Like most Captains, Kirk isn't all that useful when something needs to be operated. He knows how to give orders, and has a general understanding about all aspects of ship's functions, but details are totally foreign to him.
Improvisation: 9. Kirk was all about finding new ways to get the job done, and "thinking outside the box". He did almost nothing by "conventional" means, and seemed to actually want to do things differently, using any excuse to throw "the book" out the window. His perfomance in the Kobayashi Maru exam is a prime examle of this.
Battle: 9. In all aspects of warfare, whether it be hand-to-hand, ground, or starship "dogfights", Kirk is a master. He's beaten the odds more times than even Spock could calculate.
Diplomacy: 6. Kirk leaves a little something to be desired in this area. Though he is more than capable of delivering the infrequent stirring speech, he's never going to be the guy that's going to sit down and stop a war with nothing but words.
Accessability: 8. Kirk is not a guy who puts himself apart from his crew. He's on a very non-protocol "first-name basis" with several of his officers, and never "rips someone a new a$$" unless absolutely unavoidable. Makes it a point to connect with virtually everyone on his ship on a personal level.

Overall Rating: 7.83

Jean-Luc Picard:
Charisma: 7. Though not quite as magnetic as some of the other Captains, Picard never has a problem getting anyone's attention.
Technical Skill: 4. Not Picard's strong suit. More than any other Captain, he seems utterly lost when not on the bridge.
Improvisation: 6. Picard can certainly come up with some unorthodox methods, but he tends to play things as "by-the-book" as possible.
Battle: 8. Picard is rarely overmatched in any situation aboard a starship, and he can certainly take care of himself physically.
Diplomacy: 10. Though Picard can get things done by force, he's a monster when it comes to negotiation. It seems that with very few exceptions, Picard can talk people around to nearly any point of view he chooses. He also tends to prefer to solve problems verbally first, resorting to violence only when there is no other way.
Accessability: 7. Picard has a warm relationship with most of his senior staff, but that's about all. Though he cares a great deal about everyone under his command, he never fraternizes with any of the "lower class", and often seems to avoid contact with them.

Overall Rating: 7.00

Benjamin Sisko:
Charisma: 6. He may be "The Emissary" to Bajorans, but he's not exactly the most glaring personality you'll ever see.
Technical Skill: 7. Not a guy who's going to rewire half the Defiant's systems, but he's far from detail-illiterate. He has more technical knowledge than most people in the command line.
Improvisation: 8. Though he can be a textbook Captain at times, he's no stranger to tweaking the rulebook, and has used his own personal knowledge to get his people out of a jam on more than one occasion. Has been known to endorse less-than-conventional actions by those under his command, as well.
Battle: 10. Sisko knows his way around a battlefield, and can plan strategy on a vast scale. Probably the most hardened of the Captains on this list.
Diplomacy: 8. Sisko also has the ability to curb his feelings, and listen to reason. He also has the ability to calm potential hostilities before things get out of hand. Unlike some others, this skill developed over the course of his command, while having to deal with so many radically different personalities, ranging from the overbearing Romulans to the hot-tempered Martok, and the despicable Weyoun.
Accessability: 8. Sisko makes it clear that any of his crew can approach him at all times, with any problem. He has a deep bond with a large protion of his crew, and an especially deep friendship with the various incarnations of Dax.

Overall Rating: 7.83

Kathryn Janeway:
Charisma: 6. Despite her rather frail stature, she carries herself like a lion. She has more than her share of personality, as well.
Technical Skill: 10. A former science officer and a bit of a gearhead, Janeway has intricate knowledge of almost all shipboard systems. More than any other Captain, she is extremely well-suited to "getting her hands dirty".
Improvisation: 9. Out of necessity, Janeway has had to develop a knack for using unorthodox means to accomplish the goals of her crew. Over time, she has become extremely adept at doing things in many different ways.
Battle: 7. Janeway can get things done on a small scale aboard a starship, but usually relies on her staff for strategy.
Diplomacy: 7. Well-versed in negotiation, but she can sometimes be baited into a fight rather quickly.
Accessability: 9. Janeway shares a very close relationship with almost every single member of her command. This is another attribute that developed over time, out of necessity. But though she considers many of her crew to be her personal friends, she isn't afraid to draw the line between "Captain" and "crew" real quick, when the situation calls for it.

Overall Rating: 8.00

......wow, this was unexpected. Doing it this way, Janeway receives the highest ranking (even though Kirk is my personal favorite), and Picard comes in last (even though I personally believe Sisko is the "worst" of these four).
