And now for something slightly different. To whit, totally freakin' ridiculous. We've all seen odd looking weaponry in books, films, and so on. Things that could surely never be useable. However, if humanity is crazy enough to put these things in a book, someone out there will almost certainly be mad enough to make one and learn to use it. That's why this month, I'm looking at the tiger hook sword, all the way from China. ![]() It looks pretty unusual, and that's because someone made this while trying to have as many functions in a sword as possible. Initially, of course, these two can be used as common or garden variety swords for slashing at your foes. The hooks on the end are a devilish means of tripping your opponent, too, and can obviously pack a sharp punch spiking your opponents. They double up for trapping and catching enemies' weapons. Those are the obvious features. Now take a look at the handle end. Firstly, the ends of the hilts are literally daggers. Then that unusual crossguard? Close-quarters slashing weapon that can be drawn across an opponents' throat or face. In a tight melee a simple slashing sword can be caught out - the hook swords are designed to be used at any range. But we still haven't gotten to the most ridiculous bit. You have already been able to slash your enemy with the blade, stab them with the hilt, punch them with the crossguard and take their legs out with the hook. But... the hook has another function. Which is why these swords come in pairs. If that enemy is just a little too far away... why not hook the swords together? Double the reach, double the fun. Not that it isn't ridiculously difficult and dangerous, but for a three metre reach with a blade swinging like a morning star, perhaps some risks can be taken. Of course, there is one obvious problem with the whole setup; you need to be incredibly well trained to use it, and it's very much a solo weapon as opposed to one for formation fighting. Nevertheless, I'm sure the cool factor would outweigh this for many potential warriors who could be bothered to spend the necessary learning time! Edited by James Baillie, Nov 18 2011, 06:32 PM.
