Blame the guys in charge for the heretic stuff. Large sections of the imperium don't give a **** about trading with aliens. |

Yes, but that's irrelevant because the way a country/faction/state/empire/race is run nonetheless goes before that. |

I just like the way the Tau have an overriding philosophy that isn't self-centred and xenophobic like the rest of the universe they live in... |

What's the whole Greater Good stuff about, then? |

That 'greater good stuff' is a dream to unite the universe. Basically communism. Which may work because they arent humans. |

The "Greater Good" is, as Jethro says, basically Communism in its true, correct and ultimate form. Each caste works with every other, giving according to their ability and recieving according to their needs. There is no discrimination on most grounds (as far as I know no non-Tau get to leadership roles but at least they don't get murdered as they would by most other galactic races). I mean, they have at least 5 races (Tau, Kroot, Vespids, Humans, Demiurg) coexisting entirely peacefully - who else in the galaxy can boast that? And they'd happlily let just about anyone else in, too, bar races so fundamentally evil or unthinking that they can't live in a civilised society (Demons, Orks and Necrontyr basically). I mean, in reality I'm no Communist by any means; it's a nice idea that never works. But hey, if the T'au CAN make their society work then fair play to them. At least if I go Gue'vesa I know that I'm not going to be randomly shot by the inquisition, that I'm comparatively unlikely to starve to death, and that someone will be giving a damn if my planet gets invaded rather than blowing it up to prevent the same happening elsewhere. |

'nids aren't even conventionally sentient, for that matter. |

They are. If away from the synapse creatures link to the hive mind, the lesser creatures revert to a bestial state. The lesser creatures are like wild animals on their own. |
