Nemesis - Ogres

This month we concentrate on the big lads of the Old World, the Beasts from the East, the Bellies of Doom, the Devotees of the Great Maw, the Ogres. (It's worth noting that this is the last of my major forces so next month it could be your army in the spotlight - you have been warned !)

On the face of it, the ogre army has pretty much everything going for it ; hgih strength and toughness troops in the core section (and they cause fear too), some wierd and wonderful troop types in the form of the scarplauncher and the yhettis, rock hard rare troops like the Maneaters and the gorger (unbreakable killing machine which appears behind the enemy.), not to mention cannon-toting leadbelchers (missile troops that can certainly survive a round or two of close combat). It certainly all looks good (and then there's the spoons to figure in to the goodness!) but it does come at a price.

When highlighting the weaknesses of the ogres, top of the list for me is their lack of manoeverability. This sounds like a strange thing to say given that the basic movement is a healthy 6 inches but the fact remains that a canny oponenent with fast cavalry and or skirmishing troops at his disposal will find it easy to run rings around the big lumbering buffetmeisters. Even 'standard' heavy cavalry are pretty good, I have certainly found it difficult to deal with quality troops with a charge range greater than mine. The moral ? Get some ponies and those that kow how to ride them.

It's also true to say that pretty much every other force in the game will outnumber the ogres (even Daemons), a fact which you can use to huge advantage by ensuring that you never have to engage in a 'fair fight' - make sure you send two or more units to wipe out one unit of ogres. Just beware of becoming trapped in a fight that you can't win quickly; if the ogres pull a flank or rear charge against your already engaged unit you may aswell kiss them goodbye.

Fighting Ogres can be a very scarey prospect but don't be psyched out - if you examine the stat line carefully you'll see that an individual ogre is not actually that hard. OK they have three attacks and three wounds as standard but only WS3 and their strength is only 4 (the same as a gobbo boss !). Don't be put off, just pick your fights carefully and choose troops of a suitable quality for the job - a regualr ogre bull costs three times as much as an elite warrior of another race (ish) so you can reap victory points very quickly.

Ogre Gut Magic is a fantastic 'buff' spell list with the added advantage that spells can remain in play without stopping the butcher casting further spells. He also knows all six spells on the list as a matter of course, this allows for a very versatile spellcaster. So how do you counter the magical onslaught? Well, you can do the same as always; have a mage yourself to boost dispell dice and invest in a scroll or two. Alternatively, learn to be very selective over the spells you choose to let through and hoard your dice against that critical turn on which the balance of the game may very well hang.

As a consequence of some of the points listed above, Ogre players are often very cautious about not being flanked by fast cav etc, use this to your advantage and you may be able to get him to spend the entire game chasing around after you without being able to engage, if that happens then the game is yours for the winning - just don't mess it up !

On final note, I have some closing pieces of advice : avoid the Maneaters (they will mince you), watch out for Hunters and 'tusks (18 inch charge range, cause fear, hard in combat, unit stength two) and most importantly, never underestimate the amount of damaged to be caused by a well flung spoon.

See you next ish.
