Tactica Bretonnia - Other Instrumental Units Hello again. It may have been a little while now, but last time, we discussed Knights of the Realm and their range of benefits to the Bretonnian general. This time around, I'll be focusing on other units in the Bretonnian army list and how to use them. I did say that there would be a spotlight on Peasants, but unfortunately, I can't fit that in. Sorry. So, without further waffling, on to business. Knights Errant These are the other Core Knightly unit in the army list. They are the young knights of the kingdom, determined to prove their spurs to their elders and gain entry to the knightly ranks proper. As such, they are a bit less adept than the Knights of the Realm, with WS3 and Ld7 to show for it. However, they are not without their uses on the battlefield. At 141 points for 6 with full command, they are cheaper to field than realmers on the whole (although not cheap enough to be truly expendable!) As such, they are ideal for flanking, flank-countering, and distractions - which is largely what I use them for. In addition, the unit can be bolstered by the Errantry Banner, which, for a fairly cheap 25 points, increases their Strength by 1 on the charge. However, in some situations it is good to keep these units near the General, as one failed Impetuous test can send them recklesssly charging into the fray when it is best to just stay put, which can scupper your plans in some circumstances. This shouldn't be of massive consequence, though, but be wary of it happening at all times. Pegasus Knights These Special choices are more wealthy Knights of the Realm mounted on winged Pegasi - the Bretonnian trademark flying cavalry unit. As flyers, these are good at all the things one would expect - march blocking, flanking and distractions, to name a few. These Knights excel at picking off isolated, weak units at speed, and are equally useful for supporting charges for units of Knights of the Realm. However, their prowess in combat should not be understimated, even if they only form a small unit - the pegasi are just as hard as the riders, dishing out 2 S4 attacks apiece (thus often outstripping their riders!). This makes them excellent against light infantry, such as Wood Elves, State Troops, Gobbos, and anything strength and Toughness 3 in between. Grail Knights Now we come to my personal favourites. Grail Knights are the true elites of the Bretonnian army. Firstly, their proflie speaks for itself - WS5, S4(6 on the charge with lances!), I5 and 2 Attacks is certainly nothing to be sniffed at. This alllows you to charge them into the strongest enemy elites and/or monsters (see below*) and almost certainly come out on top. Their special rules are also pretty amazing. The Grail Vow makes them Immune to Psychology(*), and gives them magical attacks, allowing them to take on even Ethereal creatures. Living Saints allows them to make and accept challenges just like Champions. This may be of some use to you, but as I almost always put a Knightly character in with them, I rarely ever use it myself. On the tactics side, the Knights are the ultimate elite-hunters. Use them to search down whatever scary combat units your opponent has and slaughter them without remorse. Or conversely, charge at whatever gets in your way and plough through the enemy battleline, turning round next turn for a rear attack. Bear in mind though, that despite all I've said, Grail Knights aren't invincible by any means. Get flanked or led into prolonged combat, and their chances of survival are dramatically reduced. (See the March issue's Tactica Bretonnia for more info on how to keep your cavalry alive.) And last, but not least... The Field Trebuchet (I did include some Peasants after all!) This is just your run-of-the-mill stone thrower, but with Strength 5(10). This is a great unit for support in a 2000+ point army, and useful - as all stone throwers are - for dispatching annoying units of large infantry. Keep it on a hill, out of the enemy's way, and it could come in handy, but by all means, don't rely on it - your cavalry are your main priority and the crux of your army (unless it's a peasant-heavy army, which are out of my already minute field of expertise.) That said, it was somewhat useful to me in that less experienced opponents, during my brief love affair with the unit, suffered from chronic "Oh no, he's got a Trebuchet" syndrome. This normally meant they deployed miles away from me. See if you can use that to your advantage. Well, that's all I've got for now. See you soon, and happy gaming.
