The scouts struggled on through the forest, some were thinking the swamp had been a less daunting trip. But Sergeant Telion, having the highest rank in the group, chose where they travelled, and they travelled through the forest. Telion's auspex indicated the complex was only over the next rise, where the trees thinned and stopped. But, just before they crested the hill, the figure was there again. B ut something was diferent, this time, the figure carried a sword, blazing white, but again it was no daemon weapon, it was too pure. It stood there, silent, motionless. Then the silence was broken. A scream that would pierce the heavens, rang in their ears, the figure glanced away. Telion saw his chance to end this possible threat. Raising his weapon, he fired directly, a single shot, at the figures' head. It went clean through. Then the figure spoke again: "You take me for your enemy? Come, look at your camp". They advanced cautiously towards the hilltop. When they got to the top, the sight they saw would haunt their dreams from that moment. "chaos" "Yes, they were travelling faster than you, on skimmers, through the swamp. They arrived hours before you, the guardsmen fell in a few minutes". "minutes?" "Yes, these were chaos marines, of the word bearers, not a mere cult". "To crack that bunker they must have carried heavy firepower." "No, when they arrived, they summoned daemons, who's merest touch melted the bastion". "I have to signal the other marines" "At your peril" and the figure was gone again. The ultramarine strike cruiser drifted from the warp. The hull was scarred from the daemons trying to break in. A vox message crackled over the network. "this is -----ant Telion. The ch--- fo---s have taken over --- -------- base. Pull b--k, I re----, --ll back!" "The transmission is scrambled, whatever this message Telion sent us is, we will have to proceed, librarian, see if you can unscramble the rest of the message." "Yes, brother-captain. I will begin immediately" "Brother Matiel, ready the drop pods for launch, I want to be at full battle readiness for whatever is to come." "Yes, brother captain". As the librarian and marine left, the captain made a silent prayer to the emperor. This was worse than orks, much worse. |
