So there's a lot of issues we could discuss. We both showed interest in education, the tv desensitizing us, discipline, and children's activities. My mom brought up another issue: talking on the cell phone while driving. I normally only get cut off by people on the cell phone, so that one is of particular interest to me.

Anyways, I'll browse CNN and some other sites to see what's happening. I haven't been following the news very well as of late.

Hey man, sorry I haven't been getting on. Had some stuff going on.

Yeah, I never really thought about just having kids watch the news like that. It does make sense that children might have difficulty comprehending that something is only happening once and being replayed. I think it's about at age 11 that we start developing abstract thought, so that makes a lot of sense.

I'll have to look into this further. Probably tomorrow night.

Here's some interesting stuff that I've found:

Studies have found that watching television does not increase attention, promote social skills, or foster creative play.”

The American Psychological Association Help Center indicates that there are three types of harmful effects associated with viewing violence. They are:

Learning aggressive behaviors and attitudes

Becoming desensitized to real world violence

Developing a fear of being victimized

* two-thirds of infants and toddlers watch a screen an average of 2 hours a day
* kids under age 6 watch an average of about 2 hours of screen media a day, primarily TV and videos or DVDs
* kids and teens 8 to 18 years spend nearly 4 hours a day in front of a TV screen and almost 2 additional hours on the computer (outside of schoolwork) and playing video games
Quote:

* Children who consistently spend more than 4 hours per day watching TV are more likely to be overweight.
* Kids who view violent acts are more likely to show aggressive behavior but also fear that the world is scary and that something bad will happen to them.
* TV characters often depict risky behaviors, such as smoking and drinking, and also reinforce gender-role and racial stereotypes.

Under the age of 8 years, most kids don't understand that commercials are for selling a product. Children 6 years and under are unable to distinguish program content from commercials, especially if their favorite character is promoting the product. Even older kids may need to be reminded of the purpose of advertising.

They basically recommend that children should be allowed only a couple of hours of viewing, and that commercials should be cut out entirely, if at all possible. It's pretty much completely proving my point: television isn't a substitute for good parenting.
