The night of December 31 was quickly approaching. Shibusen had adopted a renovated end of the year celebration, moving it from Christmas eve to New Year's eve. This was partly due to the lingering sentiments of a founding of Shibusen party gone horribly wrong in the past (you can't get much worse than the unsealing of the Kishin) and partially because people were more keen on New Year's as it was less of a family holiday time (and there was a better excuse to imbibe copious amounts of liquor).

The time was still early, though. Students, teachers and residents with nothing better to do at the time had arrived early. The massive ballroom in Shibusen's tower had been converted to a makeshift theater in note of this, and films were being aired onto a large projector screen hanging over the stage.

The main reason anyone would come early would not be to watch the movies, but to sample the food being served by the school; put simply, the dishes served at the end-of-the-year parties were to die for, and those who arrived early got the best picks of the bunch. The good seats to watch the film were a perk of that.

The room was decorated all around in white draperies, all adorned with a golden bow and Shibusen's symbol, the Reaper's friendly, skull-like mask. Vibrant bouquets of white roses tied with a gold ribbon were set atop clean white tablecloths, and all around the room's edges were set elegant, tall candles upon gold candelabras. Gold-framed mirrors were set up at intervals around the room, for students and for Death's convenience.

Though this party's actual activities were less formal than in years past, today's dress code was unmistakably "formal"-- the idea was that that meant "black tie", but some people interpreted that differently. In any case, it was simply in bad form to show up in anything less than semi-dressy. Even Death, appearing in his mirror from time to time to check up on the festivities, looked a bit more regal today.

The catering staff skittered across the room, setting up the various plates of food, drink and dessert. A small band sat in the corner, tuning their instruments. A movie began playing on the screen, the volume somewhat low. The Sun, with a sleepy expression and a strand of drool hanging out of its mouth, hung on the horizon in the west while on the other side the moon began to peek, signaling night. Though the party would not truly start until a few hours later, people still arrived and made themselves at ease in the ballroom.

Ashton arrived at the party relatively early. This was partially because he was hungry, partially because everyone he knew was either out of town or going to the New Year's party, and partially because he had received a threat to "be there, or else". The threat had been in the form of a ransom note, newspaper letters clipped out and all, though it was not mysterious at all-- it had been signed "DAD <3" at the bottom. He still had the damn thing in his pocket-- just thinking about it annoyed him, so he took the note out and crushed it in his hand.

He would throw it away when he got the chance. For now, Ashton found one of the mirrors and preened himself. He was wearing a simple tuxedo-like ensemble, though he had substituted a bow tie for a normal one. His hair had been styled for once, tamed and combed into a neat flip in the front. No headband for him today. He left his reflection and went to examine the rest of the room. The movie looked boring, so he ignored it. The dinner plates looked tempting, so he stole a small bit of food. Walking aimlessly around the room, though, he had the feeling he was being followed...

Felix had not come early for the food, the movie, or any of the poor entertainment Shinigami may or may not have hired. In all honesty, it was his mother's fault. As was everything, but it was his mother. It was expected. Even so, he had refused to accept defeat of the usual craziness of parties held at Shibusen, and he had resigned to a floor above. He had calmly enough avoided a few of the delinquents hovering about, waiting for some wimps to beat up. They found what they were looking for in Felix.

This part was sort of hard for the black-haired to teenager to remember - something about getting into a fight. Head trauma aside, he knew there was an absence of a certain lucky charm, and that he was kissing a cracked floor. Then he blacked out for a second as he was sure something hit him much too hard.

He only knew blackness for a minute as he recovered. He opened his eyes slowly, the room coming together in a blur. Before all else, he looked in his pocket for his second clover necklace. He found it and wrapped it around his neck quickly. Wouldn't want to attract bad luck, no. Observing his current surroundings, he first noticed a definate floor in the ceiling. Ah hell. He thought before sitting up. He wondered why he had such a fast recovery if he was BEATEN INTO THE DAMN FLOOR BELOW but passed it off as he's an anime-based character, who cares?

Felix got up onto his elbows and gave himself a quick lookover. His tux was, sadly, covered in... ceiling dust. Great. His mother will kill him when he gets home. A look to the side gave sight to another black-haired teenager. Who also looked pissed, but for probably different reasons. Felix tried to not look as panicked as he was as he scrambled up onto his own feet. "Uh, yo."

Will was so happy. He had forced Ruben to come to the new years eve party two hours early because (and this is what Will was sticking to) he wanted to have the best seat in the house for the movies that would be on. It was for this reason that he had demanded that Ber be plonked smack bang in the middle of the impromptu theatre, and that he and Ruben sat astride the great clay monstrosity in readiness for movie 'watching'. Will was sitting facing the back of the cinema but Ruben hadn't told the eccentric weapon this yet. He also hadn't told Will that Ber was blocking the view so much that most of the screen was being projected onto the golem's back, so they weren't so much impeding the view of those behind as those in front.

At one point Ruben wandered away and wandered back with some food, and in general the weapon/meister duo sat and had a tasty meal and a good laugh, dressed in their Sunday best. Eventually Will suggested that they leave Ber to hold the seats for them, and went to talk to people. Will greeted most people with a fist bunp to the face, despite the fact that this was giving him a throbbing headache himself.

”Uh, yo.”

came a voice from nearby. It wasn't directed to Will, but being blind the gregarious and childishly egocentric weapon was not aware of this.

”Hello!”

shouted Will happily, and his fist flew in the direction of Felix's face in greeting. Will winced as the behaviour correcting chip in his brain kicked in for what must have been the fiftieth time that night, sending a spark of pain through the back of his skull.

”This is a great party, am I right?”

the blind weapon gazed enthusiastically just over Felix's left shoulder in a slightly vacant, but excited way. His usual beanie had been replaced by a smart looking top hat that was slightly too large, and slipped down, mostly covering Will's eyes with his hair. The rest of Will was clothed in a neatly tailored suit, complete with tailed jacket, and pinstripe pants. The bow tie was already hanging loose around his neck, having been too much of a restriction for Will's tastes.

In a friendly way, Will leaned on Felix's shoulders, being nearly a foot taller than the other boy.

“There's something wrong with the puuuuunnnnnch”

Will whispered breathily, his lips nearly tickling Felix's ear (Will had no concept of personal space, or at least that is what he like people to think). He hadn't tried the punch, and wasn't entirely certain that there was punch to be had, but it seemed as good advice as any.

Festive events were some of Miru's favorites. She was able to sit back in a corner and watch, content with music, the good cheer of others, and (usually) very good food. Even knowing that few would notice her, she felt it pertinent that she dress for the occasion - a cream and gold dress with three rhinestone straps per shoulder fit her snugly in the torso, billowing out in a fluffy princess skirt to her slender ankles. Her legs were markedly bare, though for once she wore shoes; cream colored heels with rhinestone straps, still perfect and new from the box. A translucent gold scarf hung around her neck, resting over her shoulders in place of her carefully packed away sweater. The blonde's normal wheelchair had been decorated slightly with poinsettias on the back handlebars, and her backpack rested in its trusty and easy-to-reach location.

Everyone looks so lovely tonight, she thought happily, smiling to herself as she viewed everyone from a space off to the side. She brushed her hair away from her face absently, tucking the loose strands behind her ear, the ashen threads having escaped from her shining brass barrettes.

This will be a wonderful memory, to be sure. My next piece, indeed! Joyous of the thought, the teen slipped her tiny sketchbook from her side (carrying the large one was a hassle in these situations) and procured a pencil from her bound hair. The style remained unchanged, and she began afresh, sketching those she saw - teachers, students... even flashes of Shinigami-sama flickering through the mirrors. Basic sketches to get into practice with various features and styles.

This is the trouble with gambling, Ellis thought irritably, pinning a black wig harshly into place as she stormed towards the stables. You look like a fool when you lose.

Though, granted, those lovely girls in the Crescent Moon class had seemed so delighted with her performance a while back. They appeared ready to do just about anything to see the Winchester in costume again. So, Ellis had made them a wager/compromise; if one of them came to her in honesty with a request for a date, she would be more than happy to wear the costume to the New Year's Party, perform, and treat the lucky lady to a perfect date. Not surprisingly, the cowgirl had expected them to back out and thought little of it until a week later.

Ah well - bit myself in the arse there. Not that making a young lady happy has any issue on my conscience. Only... Shaking her head, the girl pushed open the stable doors and gave the face that greeted her a stern glare before setting bareback on the sole white stallion the school had. The horse was freshly washed, smelling of spring rain and animals without a spot on the perfect alabaster coat.

"Not a word, Alice." The blonde only grinned and "zipped" her lips with a pat to the flank of the horse. Shifting to make sure the black case on her back was settled properly without interfering with the sword (functional display) and revolver (empty but real) settled at her left hip in the old-fashioned belt. Satisfied with the easy reaching of all aforementioned objects, the masculine woman sent a message to the steed through her legs, poised gracefully on the pseudo-Companion as they trotted off to pick up their date.

I hope this impresses them all enough. Honestly, it's been so long since I've been on a date, though... so maybe it's not so bad...

If only she'd actually convinced Bale to come, too. She would have felt minutely better knowing the dour Meister was around in case a repeat of last year happened (or something equally as bad), but wasn't about to admit it out loud. "Focus, Ellis - time to be the Herald Mage and make a lovely lady happy."

Whew! So, just to clear up, Ellis is gay. Being overly masculine, this is no issue for her, and any female character who wants to be her date may certainly do so. ^_^ I mainly wanted another excuse to throw a Mercedes Lackey reference in here. The gold lines in the bottom of the picture are the tops of knee-high boots, btw.

The band happened to be one member short. The young lad who played the tuba thought it funny to follow Jenna around whilst playing a low refrain in tune with her footsteps, but after having the breath choked out of him he would probably sit the rest of the new year out. Alexander of course was quick to scald the overzealous offensive from the meister, but congratulated her once out of earshot of any bystanders (of which there were few, since this fight happened to be much more one sided and swift than any of her other recent bouts of stupidity). Much to Jenna's dismay she was stuck waiting for a new pair of absurdly shaped shades thanks to the untimely demise of her previous pair, but even then would probably not have gotten away with wearing them to the event.

Upon attempting to leave for the party early and get first dibs on any and all snackables, Jenna was overpowered and pretty much mugged by a few classmates who fancied themselves seamstresses. No amount of threats or references to breaking limbs would help her cause, and the result was very unfavourable. Instead of being allowed to don her (frankly, currently unwashed) yellow ensemble, she ended up far more dressed up than she really deemed necessary. Her dress was strikingly white and overly frilly to the point of it being obvious that it was attempting to hide her ample figure, and her cords wrapped around her waist and spiralled down the outside of the dress barely disguised as ribbons of some kind. Full-length, it also did well to hide the fact that her footwear choice remained unchanged. That is to say, needfully heavy boots that almost betrayed her stealthy following of Ashton. Almost but not quite, as when the time was right she seized her opportunity. She didn't snatch his food, but rather made a small diving motion and ate it right out of his hands.

Twisting on her heel and wiping residue from her face, she faced the not-headbanded weapon, who seemed more concerned that she almost bit off his fingers than being glad to see her. She paid no mind to it, letting her mind drift whilst rubbing a few strands of hair between her forefinger and thumb. Her hair had been perfectly straightened, creating a bob cut that would probably make her head resemble a mushroom in silhouette. Waving away any and all complaints of a Kuan nature, she gestured over to the movie screen that Ashton had been paying no mind to. The original movie had its playback cut short, and a new one took its place. Those looking towards the screen would see a convict writing and receiving letters to and from his young daughter, Casey.

"Don't say I never do anything nice for you."

A sudden crash next to Ashton had him whip around suddenly to find that a boy had fallen there. Odd. There was also rubble. A pouf of dust descended from above him, and Ashton looked up to see a hole in the ceiling. He looked back down at the boy. Well, he was dressed for the occasion, no mistakes there, but... wow.

"Nice entrance," Ashton said, bemused. He had his hands full, so he merely watched the other boy, who got to his feet just in time to receive a greeting and a punch to the face by someone Ashton vaguely recognized. The top hat made it a bit difficult to be sure. Being fond of his face, he backed away quietly. It took only a few steps for him to bump into something solid. What was that? He turned around and found a rock. A very large rock just... sitting in the middle of the room.

Taking a closer look at it... it was definitely a rock. Though it looked more like some kind of statue. Holding his food in one hand, Ashton gave it an experimental poke. For the moment, he forgot about his sense of pursuit and examined the thing. Was it a party favor? If so, why was it sitting in the middle, blocking the screen? He was so engrossed in wonder, he didn't hear the sound of approaching footsteps from afar. There was a sudden whoosh of air, and the weight on his hand was gone. He snapped out of his fixed gaze, looking back and forth hurriedly. And there she was... the culprit turned to face him.

Ashton stammered, mumbling something about how he was going to eat that and rubbing his fingers. That thought of protest disappeared when he realized it was Jenna in front of him, frills abounding. Jeez, that was weird. He wasn't used to seeing the girl in anything even remotely dressy (ironic, considering she usually wore a dress-- though a simple one). Ashton attempted to compliment her on her looks, but couldn't quite get past deciding between saying "pretty" or "frilly", so he botched it.

"Jenna? Wow. You look frippy..."

Jenna hushed him with a vague and disaffected waving motion. She then directed him to the movie screen; someone had managed to jerry-rig the projector to mostly avoid the large golem that had been blocking most of the screen, and along with that the old movie cut out and a new one began to play. It was immediately familiar to Ashton, and he commented on this.

"Hey, I like this one--"

"Don't say I never do anything nice for you." Jenna butted in.

Ashton stared at her for a moment. It took him a moment to realize what she was referring to-- how she knew his favorite film was a mystery to him. Had he inadevertently mentioned it? He didn't know really, but in any case, that meant she had gone out of her way to get a copy and goad the staff into playing it.

"Oh! You did that? How did you know I liked--" Ashton began, then abruptly interrupted himself. "--Wait, I never said that!"

He sighed.

"Egh. Never mind! You could at least ask before you freakin, almost bite my hand off," he said, scolding Jenna, then muttering.

"Bet you don't even like chile pepper anyway... Right, well, better get some more food. You come with me, an' get your own this time!"

With that, Ashton edged away toward the outskirts of the room, where the platters were set up. Ashton was careful to circumvent the blind boy in the top hat. Despite his dapper looks, Will was still enthusiastically punching people, and Ashton did like his face. From the looks of it, ceiling kid was still being harassed by him. The boy hissed something in his ear, something about a punch, and so Ashton made a beeline for the food.

For the moment, between meeting up with and being surprised by Felix, Will and Jenna, Ashton had mostly forgotten about the note in his pocket. At least, it had been pushed to the back of his mind in the list of pressing issues; the current priority was "get Jenna something to chew so she doesn't attempt to eat me again". Someone in the wings, familiar to Ashton, seemed to sense this. A man handed his drink to the nearest person and excused himself from vapid small talk. Target sighted and in range. He chuckled maliciously.

"Hhm hm hm hmhmhmhmhm..."

"Hello!" shouted an unfamiliar voice. Felix turned around just in time to get punched in the face. He yelped and grabbed his aching nose instinctively. The new happy guy knew how to punch apparently. "This is a great party, am I right?"

The black-haired teenager let go of his face and glared at the older guy. "What the HECK do you mean, 'great party'? I fell through the ceiling and you just PUNCHED ME-" he started to complain when suddenly Will leaned upon his shoulders. Felix stopped out of pure shock - hey, he didn't swing that way. He flinched back and continued glaring.

“There's something wrong with the puuuuunnnnnch”

A slight shiver creeped down Felix's spine as the stranger was suddenly hissing in his ear. What the hell he had to wonder. Of course there was something wrong with the punch. It just hit him in the face! He closed his eyes and tried to calm himself. This guy had crazy written all over him. And if he knew anything from past experiences with crazy white-haired guys, they were pure bad luck. And there was just about nothing worse for Felix than bad luck but pushy pinkhaired females.

"Look, I don't care how happy about this demented party you are. Just get away from me!" Felix yelled almost in a paranoid way - wait, no, it was totally paranoid. He hated this whole event. Practically everything was out to get him, even the ceiling, and he wanted out. Out out out. He ripped himself from Will's grasp and backed away quickly. He looked from left to right, trying to find the door... usually they were twice his size and easy to find - AHHA, there they were. Felix had no idea why he couldn't find them earlier - panic, he guessed - but either way, it was a godsend. He headed for it quickly.

A rushing caterer blocked his way. "No leazing until ze prepahracions are fineeshed!" came from the oddly french-foriegn accented waiter. Felix's eye twitched in annoyance. He grit his teeth in defeat. He turned his head to Will.

"Where's the closest bathroom from here?" Felix absolutely hated to ask, but usually he'd never had to explore around the ballrooms.

An end of the year bash where everyone would be wearing some of the nicest clothes they had ever worn. The activities this year were a bit more suited for fun in a childish way than they were last year, but the dress code was still strict on being fancy for the event. This was what became the calling card for Sivan.

Sivan was only in this place for a few days but he was enrolled before the bash came up so he was technically allowed to go to the bash, even if he had never participated in the classes or had even done a class yet. This would actually be Sivan's first time entering the Shibusen school to meet up with other students and participate in an event. Sivan was also excited that he would be able to see everyone's fanciest clothes.

Of course Sivan was going the ballroom with a tuxedo that he had sewn himself. The material Sivan had used was silk. He had to dye the colors himself as the process isn't bad once you learn how to. He got the materials he needed from his father whenever he could to help him through his creations as there was no viable location in death city to get threads and materials.

Sivan entered the ballroom with a wide smile on his face. Although he could make his clothes look nice because that's what he worked for. When it came to his own physical appearance, he could be a geek. His normally straight hair was gelled and then slicked back. Sivan in truth has never gone to fancy events and although he knew about the clothing from all the studying he did on clothes, hair was a completely different story, but it didn't matter to Sivan because he had his own custom tuxedo with his logo instilled on it in hopes of his brand gaining notoriety.

His tuxedo wasn't meant to be fancy in any way of showing off. He wanted it to be like the old times where the quality of the stitchwork was shown off in the light. His tuxedo was completely black as were his slacks. His long sleeved undershirt unnoticeable underneath the tuxedo as the tuxedo still manage to fit his form quite nicely. His dress pants were wrinkle free and stopped right before the shoes without showing off any socks and his shoes were bought so they weren't special. On the right chest of the tuxedo though was a golden stitch work of a lantern with a gold circle surrounding it.

Sivan was looking around and looked at the good food being laid out as well as the movie that was playing. it all seemd in good fun and Sivan was ready to join in until he noticed the atrocity that laid before him. A pair of men who had their clothe abused. One mean looking man who's tuxedo was dirty and messed up. The other one had clothes that looked all right but they were done horribly. With without missing a beat, Sivan made his way towards the pair. His first target was the one with the messed up bow tie. As soon as Sivan neared the man, his hand went as fast as possible to tie up the bowtie, straighten up the hat, straighten the tux, and yes, even tuck in the undershirt. When all was said and done, Sivan said, "Clothes are important too. You should never let them be mistreated." Of course this statement was also meant towards felix as well as his clothes were even more atrocious.

"Chile pepper? That's what that was? Point it out to me-- you know, so I can avoid it. That was disgusting."

She made it clear that the food stealing was pretty poorly planned and spontaneous. Sticking a tongue through clenched teeth, Jenna continued.

"But it's a general rule that you're a giant manlady with no tastes and will pretty much love everything that anyone with taste would avoid... Should answer the question about the movie, yeah?"

Circumventing Will seemed silly at first, but the thought was pretty hypocritical. There were definitely certain students who if Jenna caught sight of, she would have taken a wide detour too.

"Also if you hold my hand, I expect it to be worth my while or I'll ki.."

Jenna accelerated and outpaced Ashton for the last few strides to the table, stopping only when realising she was doing the whole 'large girl running towards the food' thing. Further pre-empting any flak, she looked over her shoulder and pulled a face at Ashton.

"I know. And I'm okay with it-- god damn my hands are already full."

The hands comment seemed redundant, though Jenna was four limbs short thanks to what dressing up for the occasion called for. When she thought about it further, it made sense that she hadn't run into anyone whom she had friction with. Her tentacle-pronged silhouette had been reduced to something slightly more ordinary, and for once a feeling of not being someone who stood out in a crowd washed over the meister. And it didn't feel entirely good, almost disappointing in a way. She scanned over the faces dotted around the halls. As always, some were familiar and some were foreign. The most familiar by now caught up to her, being as halfsian and baby-faced as ever.

"Yeah, by the way," Jenna spoke through her food, "what was with that thing earlier?"

The allusion was vague until she mimed an over exaggerated re-enactment of Ashton's crushing of his father's note. Her eagerness to make fun of him gave her a little memory lapse, resulting in her crushing the slice of cake in her right hand.

"... Damn. Well, someone will clean that up. Later. Much later I hope. Not... soon."

The refreshments were reached successfully, with no punches to the face or otherwise along the way. Jenna jumped the gun just a bit and overtook Ashton, somewhat hogging the table to gather her own treats. Ashton watched blankly. He could say for sure that he disliked vain girls, definitely. Jenna, however, threw him for a loop. She was on the complete opposite side of that spectrum-- she seemed to care very little in the way of personal preening, or even etiquette for that matter.

Ashton walked at a normal pace up to Jenna. He didn't have to say anything, as she turned around as soon as he arrived. Unsurprisingly, she was already well loaded up on food, having accumulated a large portion of the desserts tray in her hands and mouth.

"Jeez, slow down," Ashton said. "You're gonna ruin that nice dress."

"Yeah, by the way," Jenna said, ignoring him and talking with her mouth full. "What was with that thing earlier?"

Ashton hardly interjected with a "what thing" when Jenna demonstrated what she had meant. She did so by making a paper-crumpling motion with her hand; unfortunately, she appeared to have forgotten that she was holding a sizable piece of cake in it, which she squished as a result. A moment of silence passed. The once-proud pastry tragically dripped between her fingers to the floor in globs.

"... Damn. Well, someone will clean that up. Later. Much later I hope. Not... soon."

"I hope that doesn't mean you're still planning to eat that," Ashton replied, putting on a slightly worried face. "And... anyway, that 'thing' was nothing. Just some stupid note I was gonna toss..."

Ashton trailed off as he felt a sudden shudder. A malevolent presence was drawing close, he could feel it. He mentally cursed Jenna for reminding him of the note; she had surely jinxed him. Prior to now, there had been no sign of the accursed man, but... Ashton knew he was trapped. He surreptitiously slipped behind Jenna in an attempt to hide. However, it was futile.

"I'm disappointed in you! You're supposed to frame that note and hang it over your bed!"

A man abruptly placed his face right over Ashton's shoulder, leaning in uncomfortably close. Ashton leaned away, distancing himself from the man's loathsome beard and infuriating, smug grin. He stayed like this for a moment, until the man abruptly stood up properly and stepped around to Jenna's front. Ashton moved behind her to compensate. Now that he had shown himself, the man could be looked at properly.

He was tall, somewhat wiry and just slightly on the lanky side. He was dressed for the occasion, for the most part at least; though he had a smart suit on, he was wearing a hideous checkered bow tie which somewhat offset the effect. On his face, he wore a neatly trimmed beard which gave him a slightly evil (or at least devilish) appearance. He was very obviously Chinese in ethnicity, with shiny black hair, sharp, slim eyes and a honey-colored skin tone. If any comparison could be made, one would find that he bore an uncanny resemblance to Ashton.

"You," the boy hissed. The man frowned. He stepped forward, but just as suddenly stepped back. Abruptly, he directed his full attention to Jenna, taking one hand and addressing her in a way of speaking that was almost theatrical.

"I am sorry, miss! My son has been terribly rude, hasn't he?" He shot a glare at Ashton, then returned to an overly nice routine for Jenna. "Didn't even bother to introduce! My name is Shen Kuan. You must be his date!"
