Quietly Sockface peered at the circle as Lucy drew. He had the appearance of watching closely but was still cursing himself silently. When she was finished there was an intricate symbol on the ground. Sockface had been surprised she was using crayon. Rather unfairly, he had thought she would draw it with blood or something equally dramatic. To be fair, though, most Shibusen students had quite the flair for the dramatic (including Sockface, who always claimed a mission wasn’t a real mission without an explosion). The living doll consoled himself that using crayon was like using wax, so he could just pretend she had used a gently guttering candle or dead man’s finger. He listened as she explained that the circle was a focal point. It sounded a bit like wican mumbo jumbo, but from what the weapon had seen of Lucy, she was no poser. With careful interest he watched, and hoped that the bench was a safe distance away, as he had no idea about what would happen. Before getting on with the display Lucy raised her face to Sockface with a mischevious grin, accepting his offer of a mission. Sockface blinked. It was a gesture he’d managed to perfect, which was really only a flicker of the eyes. He had no reason to blink other than to express mild surprise, or at other times disapproval, but like his fabricated ‘sigh’ it made him feel more comfortable in his body. Suddenly the living doll was very keen to go out on his next mission. Turning her attention downwards, and in an understated movement, Lucy extended one finger toward the ground. There was the slightest of pauses, where it felt like the kind of unnatural silence that could be heard after a loud noise, and the ground exploded outwards, leaving Lucy squatting over it with an extended finger. Sockface wasn’t able to see souls or wavelength energies, so it came as a rather large surprise, and he jumped considerably with shock. ‘She was going to do that to a kid’s head?!’ The living doll sat down hard, quickly convincing himself that the circle had been different and that surely Lucy would have not used full force. Getting to his feet, Sockface jumped down to the ground and gingerly prodded curiously at the crater. It was warm, but not hot. If Lucy worked on such a power no doubt she could even be a solo meister, if she really wanted. It was impressive to find someone who was already so powerful, and hadn’t been one week all together at Shibusen. A small dust cloud floated away from the destroyed patch of ground, briefly forming a three toothed skull shape before dissipating. ‘Impressive!’ Said Sockface as he briefly brushed by Lucy’s arm, too excited to maintain contact. He stooped and picked up a fragment of ground that had remnants of the crayon circle, examining it closely. It was just normal crayon, surely! He had recognised the ‘crayola’ trademark on it at least, and to his knowledge they didn’t sell the exploding kind of art equipment. Reaching out again to Lucy’s arm, he added, ‘That was brilliant! When did you learn how to do that?’ He carefully put the piece of ground down again while he listened to her response, nodding occasionally to show he was listening and could hear her. After she’d finished, Sockface turned and placed his held out a hand to talk to Lucy, ‘Do ye want te see mah weapon form en moor detail? We shuld find oot if ye’re compatible wavelength befer goin on a mission an’ all? Et won’ be any good ef we get there an ye cannae pick me oop.’ |

”Well I had a lot of free time” Lucy had said with a sly smirk when Sockface had gotten all excited about her technique. It was an impressive technique, Lucy thought so at least, but it had only been created out of necessity. When she’d first started training and flexing her soul muscles sort of speak, she’d found herself unable to focus enough energy into one single point to achieve the effect known as a soul strike. Or any other attack for that matter. So she’d come up with her own little focus points to help her out. The gum was one, the circle was another. It had its uses, and it was strong enough, of that there was no doubt. But there was a big difference between drawing one when she had the peace and quiet to do so and trying to pin one on an enemy mid combat. That was still something that gave her a bit of a headache when she thought about it. When Sockface started talking about compatible wavelengths though, her mind started churning again. It was true, he was a heavy weapon to say the least and Lucy wasn’t exactly known for her upper body strength, or any kind of muscle related strength. And he was right about it being a big deal. If she couldn’t actually wield him, one way or another, then their team would be at a serious disadvantage as team work would be rather out of the question. Tilting her head to the side, the pink haired girl eyed the Sockface curiously, almost as if trying to figure out how to work through the problem before they’d even established if there was one. ”It’s a good point” she said after a few moments. ”If I can’t lift you it might get a bit difficult though…” Lucy eyed him again, chewing on her lip for a moment before standing up, the usual confident smirk back on her lips once again as she held her hand out towards him. ”Show me what you got. And if I can’t lift you, I’ll sure as heck do my best to figure out a way around it” she grinned, a strategy already forming in the back of her mind. |

It was his suggestion, but at her thoughtful expression he was suddenly hesitant. Was Lucy having second thoughts? Quickly the smile returned, and feeling reassured, the hessian weapon quickly began to shimmer. He grew brighter and brighter until his form was a white silhouette burning itself into the eyelids. When it seemed he could get no brighter, the body shape dissolved and shifted like a smokey serpent, before hastily reforming into an anchor shape. There was a slight clunk as he dropped an inch to the ground and the light died away to reveal a cast iron anchor, roughly 5 feet tall. It was rather like any anchor, thick at the bottom, not so thick at the top, with a curved shape like a C split by a handle. The middle point of the C rested gently on the ground. ‘Well, I’m no Sailor Moon... but how was that for a transformation sequence?’ Sockface was feeling very smug. He’d only just regained his weapon form, so of course he was still pleased with himself every time he transformed. It was such a good feeling that sometimes he just felt like transforming at odd times, like during a class, or while walking to Lucy’s hand seemed small now, as she grasped the handle. Sockface could feel that the resonance was just as good as he had with most people. Being an amiable sort, he usually got on with, or at least tolerated most people. As such, bad resonance was not something he often had to worry about. Given time, and one exclusive partner, he would become more ‘in-tune’ with them, but with Lucy, as it was, he had the normal sort of positive feeling. Being in contact he was able to speak as he normally would, rather than show himself. ‘Weel, hew are ye feelin’? Want te try te give me a swing aboot?’ He thought that even with the usual type of ‘good’ resonance he should be light enough to hoist around, like a folded up card-table. Then again (and he realised with a shudder of amazement) this was the first time in years that anyone had laid hands on his weapon form. It was a little bit thrilling to be wielded in any capacity. |

Reaching out, Lucy had let her slender fingers lock around the metal that formed a loop at one end of Sockface’ weapon form. She had, quite frankly, not expected that she’d be able to do much in the way of actually lifting him. As such her head had already started working on other means through which to “wield” him were she to prove unable to move him, some perhaps better than others but without being able to shake off the idea of a sling. A sling and a mind air transformation. The thought lingered as she chewed on her lip for a brief moment. Ah to hell with it, worst case scenario she’d pull a muscle. The girl shifted her stance slightly so to steady herself, then, giving it everything she had, gave the heavy Anchor a tug. For a brief moment her mind continued to insist that the object could not be moved, but as soon as the anchor left the ground it was as if a switch was flipped. Lucy’s eyes widened briefly, nearly loosing her balance for having miscalculated the weight and overcompensated as a result of it. She staggered, though only for a moment before quickly shifting her weight to regain her posture as her natural instincts kicked in, allowing her arm to continue the arched movement she’d pull Sockface into, bringing the anchor up high before finishing off the arch as his weapon form was brought to rest across her shoulder. There was a few seconds of silence, Lucy still with that expression of not quite fully believing what had happened on her face. It all felt different than she’d thought, never actually having wielded a weapon before. All those years spent training and honing her skills had, in the end, been done solo. As a meister she knew that to progress she’d need a weapon partner, but there’d never been anyone with which to train with before. Not until now at least. The pink haired girl straightened her back slightly, feeling the weight on her shoulder as she continued to hold the anchor with one hand. He was still heavy enough for her, but not like she’d expected. ”Sailor Moon aint got nothing on you” she finally spoke, the smile returning to her lips as they slowly curved upwards. ”How do you do that anyways? The weight, I mean, I know you weighed more back in the hallway” She found herself compelled to look to her right, eyeing Sockface’ black metal form now resting on her petite frame. And to think the others had dismissed him as something of a weird oddity. Someone really ought to check up on their proverbs and that whole “judging by the cover” thing. |

”How do you do that anyways? The weight, I mean, I know you weighed more back in the hallway” Sockface could feel the amazement radiating from Lucy, with curiosity hot on its heels. He chuckled at her enthusiasm. Most meisters would just accept that something worked. Mac had, and in the past Sockface had also just accepted that things worked. It was refreshing to find someone who asked ‘why’. Although Sockface hadn’t been the best student he had a loose grasp of soul theory, and attempted to communicate his findings, ‘weel, et’s te do with soul wavelengths, Ah’m told. If our wavelengths work well tegether, then Ah don’ appear te be heavy te ye. A good resonance improves a meister’s nachural skill and makes a weapon stronger as well. Thaht’s why et’s so rare te find someone who prefers to go solo... A team well almost always beat a solo weapon or meister. Ef oor wavelengths war workin’ agin each other, then Ah’d appear heavier than usual... Almost impossible te pick oop. Or other bad things can happen.’ Sockface felt like he was just repeating snatches of half heard conversation and lessons he’d been tuned in for, but in the end it was more coherent than he’d expected. He briefly mentioned that it was usually covered in classes, and that there were any number of books on deep soul resonance theory in the library... in the dustier, not often visited sections. Not many students were interested in the theoretical side of studies, after all. The trouble with soul theory was that most people were unique, so most theories were guesses, some were completely off the wall, a few were case studies of unusual souls, and while interesting the proved useless to a more average person. Some covered a lot of souls by being overly general, and others were good but missed out hugely important chunks of detail. This was the issue with soul theory, and was illustrated neatly by both Lucy and Sockface. Sockface had an anchor soul, something that was either a mutation, or just not commonly seen. Lucy had some kind of problem with soul strikes but had come up with her own soul theory to work around it, something that (to Sockface’s admittedly limited knowledge) was unique. The living doll suspected he’d never find the theory behind Lucy’s power if he were to merely consult the books on soul theory, he’d have to look at her notes. Sockface stayed in weapon form, although he mentioned to Lucy that she didn’t have to keep holding him if he started getting heavy. In the end, it was easier to make an appearance in the curve of the anchor, as he looked in weapon space (distinctly human). He would occasionally run his fingers through his short, messy, black hair just because he could. There were a few spots of grey, betraying his age, but overall he was still relatively youthful. He had lines on his face that would show up clearly if he was anxious or annoyed, but there were smile lines as well that showed his more commonly beheld good humour. He was no scrawny lad, but a man who had finished growing up and bulking out. He had a paunch and a sturdy build, with lines of scars that ran over his torso where they would on his hessian body. From his weapon he could talk normally. At first he’d felt a bit rusty, but as he became absorbed in the conversation he quickly forgot his worries. Having found someone to talk to about things like soul theory, Sockface found himself chatting happily away about his thoughts on the matter. He realised it had been a long time since anyone had spoken to him for so extensively, or in such depth. Lucy, however, was very easy to talk to. She was intelligent, made good points, and understood what he was saying without him having to ‘dum it down’. The meister was one of the rare few that Sockface had met who made him feel talkative, and didn’t seem to be bored to death by it all. In all, Sockface was looking forward to the mission. It was too late, and they would have to look at the mission board the next morning, but the weapon promised he would be there as early as it was open for business.

Lucy had quite agreed with Sockface, and had eventually put him down. She’d noticed the reflection of his true appearance when he’d spoke through his weapon form, but had said nothing about it. She hadn’t been sure what to expect as to his age, though at the same time she’d hadn’t been all that surprised to find that he was a little older than herself. He’d been too likeable to be a teenager she’d thought to herself with a smirk, well aware that she was still was one of said teenagers. It was nice though to have a face to put to the voice beyond that of his rag doll appearance. It made him more human, something she was certain he was all too aware of too seeing as he hadn’t first showed his appearance through the weapon. He had a strong mind and was probably a lot tougher than people gave him credit for, but even so she reckoned that whatever had stranded him in the body of a stuffed animal couldn’t have been an easy thing to accept and had probably taken its toll. She said nothing about it though, only nodding in agreement to what had been said as she’d put him back down. Maybe some other time, if he felt like talking about it, she figured. But for now she’d give him his privacy. And so the two had left each to their own with a promise of meeting up in the morning by the mission boards. Iit would seem her stay at Shibusen was off to a very good start after all, the annoyance of rowdy teens in the library nearly forgotten as she strolled up the path leading back to the academy and its labyrinth-like hallways.
