Bells resonated throughout the large castle, signifying the end of the day for students. Several students rushed out eagerly to leave a blast of cool air in its wake. Young teenagers talked about homework and tests, normal topics for that age. However the building itself could barely be taken seriously with the outside looking like a funhouse. Naren stared blankly at the front gate, one eyebrow twitching frequently. Surely this was not the place that trained Meisters and Weapons. She had taken a wrong route... somewhere, but this place certainly was not it. And for the sake of infiltrating the school (and looking amazingly cool whilst doing so) the blond was dressed to the nines. Her flaxen hair was tied back, adorned with hairclips and flowers while wearing a pastel green cheongsam. Little did the mercenary know she looked as strange and out-of-place as the building she criticized, practically stepping out of a different era. The attempt to 'blend-in' had indubitably failed. Either way the woman went past the entrance in large strides, and was briefly surprised there were no guards. It had poor security like a normal building. There were no signs of hidden cameras or hidden mechanisms. Her eyes darted to each door and window, trying to memorize their places for future reference. In the end she had forgotten it was a new area and let her legs lead her to a large library. It was vast and probably full of information. Which was what she wanted. If it was a corrupt academy, the signs would be evident. Shortly after reading the sign that said 'Level One', the clatter of a door starting to open sent the blond crouching behind a table. But acting strangely would only draw more suspicion, a part of Naren reasoned. She curbed her instinct to hide and stood back up with a plastered smile as someone entered the otherwise empty room. "Hello," Naren asked with fake uncertainty. "I believe I'm a bit lost. Can you help me?" |

The sound of ringing bells echoed throughout the halls of the DWMA. Several students had made their way out of the classrooms and had darted towards their next destination. The now crowded hallways of the DWMA filled with the sounds of chatter and conversation. It was now the end of the school day. Some students were bolting right out of the school, heading out for recreation, or their duties as Kishin Egg hunters. A new student donning a gas mask was walking through the halls of Shibusen. Today was his first day of school here, and it was interesting to say the least. He had spent a little while worrying about the fact that he wore a gas mask constantly. It had gotten him plenty of weird looks back in Boston. On his first day of Shibusen, he realized that wearing a gas mask was probably not the weirdest thing one can do for themselves in terms of appearance. For example, Professor Stein, one of the teachers around here had a huge bolt lodged through his temples, which was twisted around like a dial from time to time. With blue mist streaming from the vent of his mask, Rick made his way towards the library. After his book listing came out with smudged ink before, he had to go to some of his teachers and ask them himself. Luckily for him, by showing the teachers the reason he didn't have the books, he was able to share a book with a fellow student. That, and they were willing to write the names of the books for him, allowing him to get the books after the school day. After talking to the teachers for the next day's block of classes, Rick was ready to get some books. As Rick made his way into the library, he saw someone. The person before him was a woman in a Chinese dress. She asked him for help, telling him that she was lost. "Sorry, I haven't quite gotten the hang of things around here myself. . .", he explained to the woman. "Perhaps the librarian could help?", he proposed to the woman as he continued to head over there. The person he recommended to the mysterious woman was where he was headed anyway. Once he reached the Librarian, he pulled out the hand written list of books. "Excuse me, but could I please get these books for classes?", he asked the Librarian nicely. A new student, the blond thought withholding a sigh. Bad luck, but perhaps it could be turned around. "Then I guess that means we're in the same boat," the woman replied with a cheerful grin. "Mind if go with you?" They both walked toward an empty desk, which upon closer inspection hid a small, mouse-like woman. Naren tilted her head while assessing the other's strange attire. For some reason the nervousness about not fitting in was completely gone, especially since the teenager who just walked in wore a gas mask. The librarian had crouched herself low enough to hide herself from any visitor's gaze. She shook in fear, but managed to take the list from the guy and quickly give him his books before returning to the sanctuary beneath her desk. Quickly asking for a book from the top of her head, Naren watched the girl scuttle to a different part of the library only to return with said novel. It would be too obvious to request something on the history of the academy. Plus, she didn't really feel like playing spy anymore. Maybe after talking to this student she'd just leave. After accepting the book gratefully, the girl smiled. Even if he was a new student she wouldn't accept being blown off like that. "Your mask is pretty cool. I'm Naren." Taking the novel in one hand, she offered her free hand for a friendly shake. Cloudy grey eyes stared at him curiously. Oh, what she would give to have mind-reading abilities. "It's kind of strange to have a new student so late in the year. Did you come for any specific reason?" |

Rick nodded in response when she said that they were on the same boat. As Rick began his approach, she asked if she could accompany him. "I don't mind. . .", he replied to the woman as he approached the library desk. As he presented the list, he realized something. "Oh crap. . . .", he muttered as he shuffled around his pocket, finally pulling out his school ID. What he saw behind the counter was what he perceived as a stereotype. An antisocial, extremely shy girl was currently manning the library. Of course, she was taken aback when she saw what he was wearing. Were some students around here really that afraid of his gas mask? Back in Boston, the people who reacted did so in laughter. But so far he scared quite a few students today. As soon as she saw the list, she gave him the stack of books. Because of his gas mask, the expression could not be seen on his face. However, it was that of a smile. "Thanks. . .", he said to the girl before she retreated back under. The woman who decided to join him requested a simple novel. After this, Rick made his way to a nearby table, carrying the newly received stack of books in his arms, keeping them stable. As soon as he took a seat, the woman commented on his mask. She called it cool, a reaction that he had rarely gotten from wearing it. She had also opened the novel in one hand, using her free hand to offer a hand shake. Taking her up on her offer, he shook her hand. "Thanks, and I'm Rick. . . .", he said to the woman in response, introducing himself as well. And then she commented that it was strange for a new student to arrive at this point of the year. She also asked him if he had a specific reason to come. "Yeah, I guess it is. . .", he responded to her first remark, with a bit of a chuckle. "And yeah, I came here because I'm a weapon, and this was a good place in order to use and master my weapon side. . .", he explained to her. He then took a binder out of his book bag, full of blank pieces of paper. Along with his binder, he also pulled out a pencil. He opened one of his new books, getting ready for homework. However, his head was raised at her, showing her that he was willing to talk and work at the same time. . . . |

Ah, she got it. He was like her partner, quiet and pretty calm. A bit of a turnoff when you first meet someone with that attitude, and maybe even offending. But that was even better. She was used to hanging out with monotone people from her Meister. At least now she could safely assume that he had no hidden agenda. Hearing him muffle and briefly lose his cool, a quirky smile appeared on her lips. Naren decided not to bother pretending she had a school ID, and the librarian didn't ask for it anyway. After meeting two inhabitants she still couldn't make heads or tails of the school. The people seemed pretty mundane (not counting their fashion sense). He decided to take her hand, so she shook it gently before letting go. If every student was like him she thought maybe the academy wouldn't be so bad. Hearing his chuckle echo from the gas mask was a bit unnerving, but it was much better than if he were quiet. At least from his laugh she knew he was amused. Naren never liked masks much unless they had a really cool design, there was too much one could hide behind one. She nodded at his explanation while slowly walking over to sit across from him. As she sat she pondered what a person would see with them sitting together. A girl in Chinese clothes and a boy with a gas mask. The woman giggled softly at the image. Once her own laughter died down, she looked down at the book in front of her and opened the cover. It had been years since Naren had read something other than military or fighting manuals. Then again, it still had violence. Thus the mercenary started to scan the translated pages of Justine, by Marquis de Sade. Although reading the pages, her attention wasn't completely on the book. Her focus hadn't even gone to the novel she asked for at all. "Maybe if I wear one of those masks it'll become a fashion trend," she stated with a small chuckle. Finally the book was set onto the table. She rested her head on the book childishly, watching Rick start his homework in boredom. "Hey, what do you think of the school so far? Do you like it? It's pretty darn big." Naren thought for a moment, then let her mouth on auto-pilot. "I mean I've always thought school was pretty boring. Never had a lot of friends, more like associates. But then again, this place is pretty different from a regular school." |

A brief moment of silence ensued between them. As the woman was apparently reading her novel, Rick was doing his homework. Of course, this was a lot for the new student to take in. But he had to take it all in if he wanted to be successful. So far, he had read about souls, how pure ones would set one down the path of the Kishin, all of that. He would have to consume ninety nine of these souls, along with one Witch's soul in order to become a Death Scythe. And then, the woman broke the silence with a remark about his mask. Of course, Rick wasn't wearing it for looks at all. It was a medical treatment that allowed him to bypass his faulty lungs. But that didn't stop Rick from chuckling in response. "I guess so. . .", he said to the woman. And then she asked him what he thought about Shibusen. Before he started, she commented that school is usually boring, and then discussing her experience. Once she was finished, Rick took a breath before replying to her. "Its pretty interesting here. . . I mean I can say it is anything but boring around here. . .", he said to the woman. Of course he was telling the truth. On his first day, he realized he was no longer in public school. Aside from the fact that he was being trained to hunt and slay monsters across the globe, this was a massive change of pace. For one, he was no longer the only student to be able to transform into a weapon, but one among many. But he was still probably one of few who couldn't and didn't need to be wielded by a meister. That, and his main teacher was a mad scientist with a love for disecting things. And also that bolt through his head. Rick cringed at the memory of Stein twisting that thing around like a dial. And then there was that guy who helped around, Sid Barrett. Somehow, that man was actually a zombie. But Rick had to admit, he was a pretty cool guy. Hell, he was a major farcry from what he associated with a zombie. But still and all, it was just another strange thing he was introduced to. After Rick spoke, he took the time to quickly get another section of his homework done. Even though he wasn't a dedicate bookworm like some of his new peers, he would still get the job done. After he got his homework done, he would probably go out and do something more. . . fun. He might have to ask around to see what would be good to do around his new home. . . . |

Boredom was bad for people like Naren. People died from notebooks when people like her got bored because that type of person would do anything to sate the dullness. And at the moment the blond was quite bored. She tapped her foot restlessly while the good student did his homework, but stopped for a moment when he chuckled. He didn't seem that corrupt at all, aside from having interesting style. She smiled when he explained it was anything but boring there. Perhaps the place wasn't as dangerous as she originally assumed. Inching closer toward him, she lightly prodded his mask with her index finger. It felt strangely cool to the touch. It also seemed air was truly filtering in and out from the gas mask. Naren wondered why he kept it on, was it a medical condition? She moved away and sighed, glancing at the book she had gotten tired of a few minutes ago. Playing with a lock of hair, she gazed at Rick with slight pity. Poor kid. He probably got stared at a lot for the mask. Naren grinned and leaned back in her chair. Then they would be friends whether he liked it or not. She reached forward and started to tug the homework he was currently working on away. "Hey, wanna go out 'n do something? If you're legal I can take you to a bar, or we can just go to the park," she said, a subtle whine in her tone. ((Sorry for the short post.)) |

To say Rick wasn't bored with his homework was complete bullshit. As a teenager who loved being a geek, homework wasn't among his 'to-do' list. Right now, he'd rather be playing video games or checking out Death City. But he knew that he had to get his homework done. If one procrastinated, the work load they were supposed to do would come back to bite them in the ass. And quite frankly, Rick would rather endure the boredom than to have it bite him in the ass later. As Rick continued with his homework, he could see the woman was bored as well. She was tapping her foot restlessly, something Rick couldn't blame her for. However, she stopped momentarily as he chuckled. And then she smiled as he gave a statement on the school. As someone who usually frequented libraries for studying and homework, he knew places like libraries were boring as hell. But then, libraries were chosen above all else due to the lack of temptations as opposed to his home. Besides, it seemed like this was the most peaceful place in Shibusen. Even though the library was the most peaceful place in other schools, it was noteworthy around here because of the students here. His peers were rowdy as hell, and built to kill monsters across the globe. Surprisingly, this place had little trouble with them. Just then, she prodded his gas mask lightly. Sure he got a lot of reactions and questions for it, but this was a first. However, it seemed to be just out of curiosity, as no harm was done. For now, Rick would just let it be. His work would be his priority for now. In his mind, the sooner it was all done, the better off he was. Until the next round, he would be free to geek out or explore all he wanted. He was at the ending point with his homework now. But then, the woman pulled at his homework, getting his attention. She asked if he wanted to go to the bar, or the park. "Well, I still have a few years before I'm twenty-one, so the park is fine. . .", he said to the woman in a friendly manner. Sure it was a distraction from his homework, but what could it hurt? Besides, he was almost finished with it anyway, so he could always get to it at home. He would just hope the temptations of video games and comic books wouldn't hinder him. He then started to pack up his things. His new books went into his book bag, along with the pencil and binder with the paper he wrote his homework on. He did this because she was obviously bored as well. So now he was ready to go when she was. . . . |

The blond waited patiently for his answer. Her face was twitching and she was finding it hard to sit still, but she remained quiet like a good citizen. If he accepted there were so many things they could do. They could play the game where one goes to the playground and sees how many small animals or children they can get with tranquilizer darts. Squirrels were three points, kids were five points, and parents were ten points. Eating the prey caught was optional… On second thought, Rick might not enjoy that activity as much as she did. “A few years? Good sport,” Naren commented with wide eyes. Most boys his age might jump five feet in the air to get a whiff of alcohol. Well, that was the way it used to be. Youth, so eager and fresh. She patted his shoulder while grinning. “There’s always a first time for everything. I could get you a really expensive drink if you want. After all, it’s never quite the same as your first time.” She stood up, grabbing the book in one hand by the spine. It always drove Naren crazy when people left their tables all messed up. Spotting the mousey librarian, she stood up and bent one knee while reeling her arm back. It would be exercise for the both of them. “Miss, here’s the book back. Think fast!” Thwack. The librarian disappeared, but in slow motion one could clearly see how the book made a clear indentation in her nose. One of her arms slowly reached upward as she fell to the ground, making the blond doubt the girl’s hand-eye coordination. It really wasn’t her fault, really. Without sparing a glance to Rick she headed for the door in the most awkward and stiff way possible. Naren was out the door just as quick, only poking her head into the room again to see if her new friend was leaving. “She should start training herself to sense when objects are coming her way,” she insisted quietly, trying to keep any discomfort out of her tone. “That lack of coordination could be fatal in battle… You coming?” |

Of course, the woman commented on his answer. While most kids were excited at the prospect of getting shitfaced, Rick wasn't. If his bad luck happened while he was sober, who knows what would happen when he was crocked? He could misstep into the path of a car. Or the usual would happen, with his mind dulled by the booze. Rick was not willing to take that chance. And then she gave him an 'are you sure' comment. "Yeah, but I'd rather wait until I'm older, personal reasons. . . .", commented the boy. Of course, if she saw him in action, she'd see why. Pianos and anvils would always end up falling on him, which he'd have to dodge. One time, a massive globe structure had gotten loose from its base, and Rick had to run for his life to keep himself alive. And then, after he got done, the woman gave the book back. And by 'give it back', he meant throw it at her head. Of course, the girl wasn't prepared for that. She had been downed by the book at her head. And as Rick looked, the woman was at the door, commenting on that. She asked if Rick was coming or not. "Uh, yeah. . . I'm coming. . .", said Rick as he swept up his bookbag and hurried out the door with her. |
