A young boy ran sobbing through a thick blanket of mist. The pine trees around him were damp, and gave off an almost overwhelming aroma as he stumbled against their thick trunks before limping onwards. In the distance there was the comforting yellow glow of the small town of Chirrickdale. Blinking away tears, the pre-pubescent teen sunk panting to his knees. Although he was so close now, he had run out of stamina. Closing his eyes, which were stinging, and sniffling to himself, the boy let out a fresh sob of terror. He could hear someone whimpering, and it took the boy a moment to realise the sound was emanating from his own throat. Quieting his breathing as much as he could, he glanced fearfully into the dark forest. All around him there was silence. The damp was starting to seep into his pants at the knees, where they touched the ground, and his arms were itchy from running through the pine trees. As his heartbeat slowed, and his breathing came back down to something resembling a regular pace, fresh tears (of relief this time) coursed down his cheeks. He had been so worried about the recent rumours that his sisters had unkindly exaggerated for him, telling him of a wild eyed beast that ate up little boys, and was forever in search of his lost lover. The more he thought about it the more he realised that is was just something that they would make up, they were like that, his sisters. As the fear subsided, and the adrenalin along with it, his limbs grew weak and he was assailed by trembles that ran up and down his body. He had sprained his ankle in the headlong dash, and now the pain was making itself known once more. About to shift his weight to examine the ankle in question, the young boy froze as a twig cracked nearby. He wasn’t alone. His heartbeat immediately jumped back up to what it had been before, but the boy would not let himself be cowed again, especially when it was probably only his sisters pulling a prank.

“V-Very funny!”

He shouted crossly, eyes watering in terror, and snot dripping down his face.

NNNNNNNIIIIIIIIVVVVVVVVVvvvvvviiiiiiiiaaaaaaannnnnne

Came a plaintive howl from startlingly close by. Ankle forgotten, the boy shot to his feet in alarm, backing away from where he thought the noise had come from. His wide eyes were unable to make out more than a dark shadow before him, approaching through the pine trees and the mist. He could hear heavy breath and the crunch and crackle of debris on the ground as it approached. Whatever the beast was, it was big, heavy, and certainly not his sister. With a feeling of dread rushing through the boy like cold water, he stood rooted to the spot as a pair of glowing white eyes turned on him from the dark. Suddenly the figure burst forwards, and in an instant, all that was left of the frightened young boy was a shredded mangled corpse.

Not a person slept that night in the village as the pained cry came floating along the night air,

On the Shibusen note board there was a fresh mission token with the details gathered on Merlin’s mission. There was a buzz of early students that were carefully attending to the board, searching out missions, happily discussing missions they had recently completed, and generally being sociable. Of all the new missions, however, the Merlin mission was receiving the least attention, and was hung high out of the reach of most students in any case.

Arthur calmly drank his cup of tea on a train. In his other hand he held information on a 'Merlin' from a Mission he accepted on behalf of Shibusen, who felt that his skill set would be useful in such a situation as this.He skimmed over the known information on Merlin which wasn't too specific but it was more than enough to peak the interest of this man.Merlin was disrupting the peace and presumably eating the souls of innocent humans, thus becoming a Kishin egg, however the fact that he would shape-shift is what truly intrigued Arthur.Shape-shifting, weapons aside, was a recognizable trait of witches.Should Merlin in fact have belonged to the Witch community, it is up to him to deal with him, as by now his soul most likely deteriorated from it's once more powerful state. When he finished his tea he set it down in it's cup and put the information on Merlin in his front pocket, he took a glance out the window and he could see the final stop that brought him into the English countryside.

Arthur stepped off of the train and looked around, it was rainy and beginning to get dark, which would normally make fighting either difficult or suicidal depending on the opponent. He still left his Soul Protect active for the moment, hoping he might be able to attract Merlin posing a normal human."Murci." he said plainly and in his palm formed a bat, which flew up high into the air, scouting for any abnormal sightings in the area.Arthur began heading toward the supposed location of the nearest town being terrorized by Merlin in hopes of obtaining more information on either Merlin himself, or simply the target's location."It all falls into place now, perhaps this will prove to be an enlightening experience into the mind of a corrupted soul." he thought to himself, as he opened his umbrella to protect his suit from getting wet.

Arthur's arrival was not the top of anyone's priority list in the small village. Recently the giant shape shifting 'daemon' had been through, leaving destruction and death in its wake. Houses were destroyed in no discernible pattern, and the mauled corpses of the dead lined the streets, as they were extricated from their broken and crushed domiciles. Men, women, and children, dogs, cats, and livestock were all being moved (slowly) towards a mass grave site. No one would eat the livestock as there was an ancient superstition in that part of the country that anyone who ate cattle killed by a wolf (or in this case demon) would be cursed to live as a wolf by night and a human by day. The devastation and loss was palpable. Many had lost their means of livelihood, and others had lost family, while still more had lost everything. A small area had been set up outside town for the (still living) victims of the beast, and they alternately slept fitfully and screamed about glowing white eyes, and giant clawed hands reaching out from the dark. Many had lost limbs. In all it appeared that Merlin had moved on from the village, and was now (once again) combing the countryside, and many of the townsfolk were certain of his departure to the point where they felt confident that rebuilding efforts would not be wasted. In the little town, everyone was busy, and only the dead rested.

---------------------

Some distance away, a strange shambling beast with stubby cow-horns, and a body covered with shaggy matted hair walked placidly through the forest. With no sign of person or beast, Merlin was sated to wander aimlessly, searching the world for his lost love. The fur was damp with water that had sunk in ages ago, and never fully dried away, occasionally becoming replenished by rainfall during the beast's recent sojourn outside of its prison. If anyone ventured close they would smell a musty earth smell of rotting vegetation and damp soil, and moving closer still they might see various types of mushroom and fungus growing in the warm, moist environment. Occasionally the beast would let out a long low mournful cry,

NNNNNNNIIIIIIIIVVVVVVVVVvvvvvviiiiiiiiaaaaaaannnnnne

Overhead, unnoticed, a small bat-like shape fluttered. Merlin seemed to sense the small magic, but the shaggy headed beast was disinterested in anything with only the semblance of life, and so continued on.

Arthur scanned the village, taking special notice to the type of damage done to buildings and animals as well as the living villagers. It seemed to be done mostly by a large animal, from this it can be assumed Merlin transforms into animals with a melee specialty as far as combat goes.Of course assumptions were pretty much useless so clearing his throat Arthur addressed the villagers "Excuse me! Does anyone here know about the person who did this?" but the villagers did not give him any response.Arthur grumbled and tried once again, "Excuse me! Does ANYONE know about the person who did this!?" only to be ignored once again. He was about to lose his temper when his bat came back down and he crushed it in his palm, revealing as a sort of hologram what he saw.Arthur watched the image like one would watch a video tape, fast forwarding to the point where he caught sight of Merlin and paused it there.

Arthur looked at the image of what was once a man, but was now something that could not even be called humanoid anymore. He looked more like a big bulk of fur, dirty with whatever the forest could throw at someone. He tried to address the villagers once again, hoping that perhaps this image could get him the response he wanted "Does anyone know about this...thing?" not completely comfortable with calling Merlin anything but 'it'.

A small child paused, attention snatched by the loud noises being made by Arthur. Her large eyes glanced up at the paused picture. As soon as the grisly visage of Merlin came into view the small girl shrieked fearfully, before fleeing to grab at a nearby adult who was (by assumption) some kind of relative. The woman patted the girl on her small head gently cooing softly to calm her. She had brown hair, and the same large brown eyes that the child sported. Her volumous skirts were dirtied with mud at the knees, and a delicate spray of freckles stood out on her otherwise pale face. Looking for the cause of the child’s distress, she noticed Arthur who was standing with the offending image in his palm. Walking over hastily to him with an angry frown the woman reached out to slap him across his face.

“If you have any common decency, You’d put that away!”

She said in a strangely calm voice, that warned Arthur she was in no mood to muck around.

“This town has dealt with enough without having to have reminders shoved in our faces.”

Her glare didn’t last for long, however, and her gaze softened, making her look much younger. It seemed that the woman was more usually a kind hearted sort of person, and not one who stayed angry for long. There were still grief lines about her face though, and she sighed heavily before picking up the still shrieking toddler.

“You’ll have to excuse my sister, but last night the entirety of our family was killed by that beast, along with a large portion of our town. He wandered off in that direction, and if you’ll take my advice, you’ll leave it well enough alone.”

The woman pointed off briefly into the forest, making sure Arthur could see the direction she indicated, before turning and moving back to what she had been doing – digging through the ruins of her house trying to find salvageable food. There was a roar in the distance that could have been mistaken for the howling of wind, but had a peculiar effect on the villagers. Many of them stiffened, and fearful expressions abounded. There was a lull in activity as everyone paused, straining to hear anything more, but as the seconds stretched onwards without any further evidence that Merlin was returning, the villagers quickly got back to work.

Arthur only looked at the child calmly as she began to shriek in fear from the image of Merlin, which was a good sign for him, and as the woman who was presumably the child's guardian of some sort would probably mean he's finally getting that information that he wanted. However when he was greeted with a slap to the face, he was filled with indignant rage and would have had no trouble putting her in her place for some a disrespectful action. However as she apologized, as indirect as it was, his anger was curbed and he listened to her story. Finally someone told him where Merlin was, which was all that he needed to get his mission done.

Arthur chuckled and took the woman's hand shaking it with his wide grin, "Well Miss, thank you for at least giving me the information I needed! Should I return, chances are your troubles shall be over." as he aimed for success in this mission.Arthur turned on his heel and began heading in the direction that the woman pointed out, and by assumption this wouldn't be too long of a walk as Merlin seemed to be coming back toward him.Arthur released his Soul Protect, aiming to keep Merlin's attention from the villagers, who could become a liability and anyway he would have to do so eventually to successfully battle Merlin.

Merlin’s great craggy head lifted sharply as his senses were flooded with a powerful soul wavelength. He could feel the rage, desolation, and unsatisfied lust, welling up at the thought of his long lost lover and tormentor. Loosing another of his fearful cries Merlin turned ponderously around before slowly starting to build up steam. That kind of soul, the type imbued with magic, was the kind of soul he was searching for most desperately. With steps that started slow but built in speed as he gained momentum, the great lumbering beast quickly managed to bring his gallop to the equivalent power of a speeding train, ramming into trees carelessly and tearing their roots from the ground, the pre-kishin began to plough a path of destruction in the direction of his destination – Arthur. Unfortunately it was also back in the direction of the village. If indeed there was a battle anywhere nearby the village it would probably result in further devastation for the people who lived there.

Just as a side note, you don’t have to worry about stepping on anyone’s toes so much ^__^ It’d be great to see you push the plot along a little bit off your own bat (hardyha). The more you give me to work with, the more I can give you in return and the thread can be awesome~

Of course Arthur's assumption was correct and so it was time to begin fighting, he had the range advantage and thanks to Merlin's speed maybe enough time to get in two spells before the hulking beast that demolished the trees in front of him would arrive.Clearing his throat Arthur began chanting "Murci...Murci...Murci..." spewing a black blob out of his mouth that became a large bat that slowly moved toward Merlin's direction, then Arthur continued "Murci~Murci~Murci~" releasing a number of bats from his hands that fused together to form a baseball bat weapon. That's when Merlin broke through the tree line, a number of villagers taking cover peeked their heads out curious as to how this stranger would fare against the monster that had tortured them for so long.

The smell was worse than Arthur expected but his main concern was a combination of his suit and being forced to fight in melee combat, Arthur was a strong man by normal human standards due to his built but he would surely be no match for Merlin's physical prowess.Luckily his baseball bat would offer some sort of protection and to a minor extent certain offensive use.For now Arthur waited for Merlin to rush through his Big Bat, to start the fight in his favor, as the more dead bats the greater his advantage in combat giving him the ability to attack from almost anywhere so long as a dead bat is there.Once Merlin was able to catch sight of his opponent, it was clear he was not Nivianne.

Time to step on toes! And I hope you don't mind me literally pushing it with my bat :P

Merlin was too far into his headlong rush to stop when it became disappointingly clear that Arthur was not Nivianna. With an angry scream, the creature burst straight through the big bloated balloon bat figure, which erupted into a number of creatures, smaller but of similar looking shapes to the original. Despite this merlin continued his charge, unable to stop, until he used the town hall as a beffer, crashing straight into it, and ploughing into the wood like a hammer into a cake. The villagers who had foolishly stayed to watch screamed in panic as a number of bat-like entities that had been created from the big bat started to attack them, diving in swiftly and biting at neck and faces. The child that had earlier been so frightened by Arthur's picture, was acosted, before her sister could get to her, and the bat gnawed out her soft juvenile jugular, continuing to attack even as it was sprayed with her lifeblood. Two other people who had been thus surprised had also been killed, and their pure blue souls hovered delicately over their bodies while bats gnawed at their corpses. Other people had managed to fend off the bats, slapping at themselves like someone being attacked by a particularly large mosquito. As the bats burst on their bodies, the people were surprised at the sticky substance of the dead body which seemed rather unlike a real bat corpse. They fled the scene of the fight, not wanting to be killed by Merlin or by the newcomer who seemed just as bad, meaning that the 'corpses' of those bats who had attacked them and subsequently died on them, also left the arena.

A few of the smaller bats were determinedly clinging onto Merlin's thick fur, but with the wirey fur, and thick layer of mud, it was barely even fleas to an elephant, and Merlin ignored them. Extricating himself from the ruined town hall, the giant beast turned, and roared angrily at Arthur, revealing large rotten looking teeth, and a giant tongue that hung limply in his mouth, dripping with saliva. With surprising swiftness, he drew in his bulk before making a giant leap, intending to land on Arthur, and squash him to death. Landing, Merlin started to lash out at any person - like object he could see with fists that pounded to the ground, and created dents in the dirt. It was unclear if he still remembered that he was fighting Arthur, or whether the turbulent emotions that were within him had turned him onto a path of more general death and destruction.
