Well, I wouldn't go that far but it was created by the flower industry to sell more flowers.... they did accomplish that. Make it commercial. That is why I don't give flowers to my mom

Mother's Day was actually created by Anna Jarvis, a woman who loved and honored her mother to the point that she wanted to make a national holiday for it. After it was done and she saw the commercial appeal of it, she spent the remainder of her life trying to undo it. So, yeah, Mtnman, it is a bit of a fraud. Here's a fun article about this: http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/news/story.html?id=c942370c-cdbb-43b2-af59-71ad4b546854 Back to the original subject of this thread, a man died because of overzealous shoppers and the best response so many can come up with is, "Damn consumerism." It's hardly about consumerism or the evils of capitalism, it's mostly about our total lack of respect for our fellow man. I mean... the man lay dying and people looked and walked on. This isn't just about shopping, it's about a total disdain for one another's lives and livelihoods. |

Things are more important to us than our fellow humans. Sorry Yhitzak, but I see that as consumerism. A society is all about what it values. |

I like the idea of contributions instead of gifts. Now what can you do instead of sending cards? |

I'm not saying that consumerism has nothing to do with this - not by a long shot! Obviously it has much to do with that. And I see your point, DB, but... this situation illustrates a disconnect between our view of things versus people, and there really *is* a difference, and *that* is ultimately the problem. What I mean to say, I guess, is that people weren't just interested in getting their things, they saw this human being as an obstacle in their way. It's not just that we value things more than people, it's that we don't value people. I guess I'd agree with you more if people were actually products to be bought and sold (though that's a point I imagine we could all discuss to the end of days :) I'm not arguing the point to be a bastard; I just feel that qualifying this incident as a mere byproduct of consumerism is missing half the issue. |

I can't disagree with your take. You're right, it's too complex to boil down to a simple term. I guess I'm just addressing the whole "Black Friday" issue- the way the retail sector and the media has whipped us into this shopping frenzy every year. |
