Sweating an onions is cooking it over medium heat until it is translucent but not brown. Broad beans are yes, like lima beans. Any big bean that you shell. I didn't know what varieties are common down there. Are limas a warm climate crop? Obviously I spend too much time watching the Food channel. Off to my Dads for Thanksgiving! Happy day everyone. |

Hey all - have a great day of eating.... Thanksgiving is pretty much the usual around here - Christmas is where I experiment. One tradition from my husband's grandmother is her cranberry relish. Pretty simple (cranberries, apples, oranges, sugar), but done in her old hand meat grinder, which we now have. The kids make this now every year, since his mother is gone too. Nothing else tastes the same as the hand grinder. I tried it a couple times with a food processor and a blender when the grinder was MIA, but it was just different. So they just hand grind the fruit (keep the peel on the oranges), add sugar to taste and let it set all day in the fridge. It is really good. |

I remember my great-grandmother had this spectacular hand grinder that hooked onto her counter. I wish I knew what happened to it. She also had this ricer attachment for it that made the best mashed potatoes. I loved pulling the handle. |

We usually have game at our family turkey day. This year we actually did have turkey. My brothers two daughters both bagged themselves a wild gobbler. Those with smoked trout and venison made it a special dinner. I can't say I was wild about the pumpkin soup though. |
