Given the speed at which the federal government is throwing money at the financial crisis, the average taxpayer, never mind member of Congress, might not be faulted for losing track.

CNBC, however, has been paying very close attention and keeping a running tally of actual spending as well as the commitments involved.

Try $4.28 trillion dollars. That's $4,284,500,000,000 and more than what was spent on WW II, if adjusted for inflation, based on our computations from a variety of estimates and sources*.

This is the new bush doctrine. Socialize the losses, privatize the profits. We've been had folks. We're never seeing that money again.

Naw- loan 'em the money them either nationalize them or break them up. We've got undo a disastrous two decades of mergers and acquisitions. Small is better.

Is it even possible at this point to undo these mergers? Will there ever be a point in the future where the mergers can be undone? Or will it happen only when the whole system collapses and we're left with a world not entirely unlike that in Dawn of the Dead?

It all depends on how deeply the corporations have wormed their way into our government. I do believe that if we as citizens demand loudly and vociferously enough that these entanglements be cut and the Anti-trust laws be rigorously enforced that we can turn these around. It all depends on us however. If we aren't willing to write letters, call, attend town hall meetings and make our opinions clear then we just need to content ourselves with being serfs.

I think it is too late, DB. I think it has been a set-up.... I really do. A set-up by the FRB. The evidence is becoming too overwhelming to ignor. I sure hope I am wrong.
