most of the kids I encounter at the High School football games have NO idea as to what reading is...if it ain't on the puter or on dvd they are clueless.. I might volunteer as a coach next year , and if so I will prolly have to hand out reading materials...

No silly!
It has to do with the Ipods and $300.00 cell phones parent's spoil their little ones with.

I heard the football coach was gonna, or did quit. You'd be a good one Mtnman.

But get ready to listen to a bunch of winey ass parent's.....

Why isn't my little Mikey playin?

well I might last 1/2 a practice... most of them are pussy pcs of shit.. afraid to tackle or hit,, they are only there cause there daddy or mommy wanted them to play.
Ya can't yell at em ya gotta praise them and make them feel like they are a tribute to the team... sorta like the old Whine Cam group...
I am personally training my grandkid to become PRO.. he is one of the biggest kids on the team and Loves to hit..... I set up a wieght room in the shop and will start him as soon as wrestling is done...

and it ain't got nutin to do with football I was talking about the girls and guys that are always there...at school and the games. I overheard one of the teachers ask a student if they had read the memo for the upcoming homecoming and she said "Can't I find it on the Internet,, or could someone text me?" HUH

and just talk to some of the kids that work at the stores.....LOL

we were all talking about Ginghis Kahn and how he had been a great ruler/conquerer and did more to promote democracy than any other ruler blah blah blah,, and a boy spoke up and said "Yeah I saw that on one of the "old time" Star Trek shows....

You have to be a good coach to bring tiny Platte Canyon to the season they are having this year..And you wouldn't talk about the kids like that Mtn Man if you ever coached..And BTW- My kid was the hardest hitter I ever saw..Have you heard of him? It was like a man against boys when he played..He was ridiculous..If I say "son, you were the greatest", he responds with.."It means nothing to me dad" . He broke a couple kids necks and soured on the game...But we watch the Bears everyweekend together..

I would add "Democracy in America" by Alexis de Tocqueville to the list as well.
YES! My list is by no means complete. What a great addition!

G, don't worry. Heh. My brother-in-law (not the sharpest tool in the shed) made an observation a while back that I find myself referring back to. There are two kinds of people in this world: readers and sports. (I've added a third category: cosmetics. Because Paris Hilton doesn't strike me as a reader OR as a jock. Oh, that's a funny idea...) As long as your kids are happy people, productive members of society, so what if they don't read? Heh. Last year for Christmas, my 11-year-old nephew asked for a laptop. Every single person in the family (and there's a buckload of us) gave him books. Heh. There's one method, I guess.

I have three kids (all in their 30s) and two of them love to read and the one does not.

The one that does not read for pleasure is a licensed Electrical Engineer in Colorado as well as a Licensed Architectural Engineer AND a licensed Electrical Engineer in California. AND she's a female!!!!! YOU GO GIRL!

And "A Clockwork Orange" by Anthony Burgess. But get the version with the 21st chapter. Otherwise it doesn't make much sense. IMO...

And "Parliament of Whores" by P.J. O'Rourke. My favorite line is from the introduction: "Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenaged boys."
