Email from a third grade school teacher in North Carolina: Simple explanation - it's all about the Ice Cream... The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade in 2008. The presidential election was heating up and some of the 3rd grade students showed an interest. I decided we would have an election for a class president. We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote. To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members. We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have. We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot. The class had done a great job in their selections. Both candidates were good kids. I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support. I had never seen Olivia's mother. The day arrived when they were to make their speeches Jamie went first. He had specific ideas about how to make our class a better place. He ended by promising to do his very best. Every one applauded. He sat down and Olivia came to the podium. Her speech was concise. She said, "If you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream." She sat down. The class went wild. "Yes! Yes! We want ice cream." She surely could say more, but she didn't. She did not have to. A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the ice cream? She wasn't sure. Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it? She didn't know. The class really didn't care. All they were thinking about was ice cream. Jamie was forgotten. Olivia won by a landslide. Every time Barack Obama opens his mouth he offers ice cream, and fifty percent of America reacts like eight-and-nine-year-olds. They want ice cream. The other fifty percent know they're going to have to feed the cow. |

Interesting that you posted this today.... just yesterday I was enraged watching the morning news coming out that the bailout was going to cost more, That there was something like $60 million earmarked in the banking industry for Christmas bonuses for CEOs - explaining it was not coming out of the bailout money but out of the funds of the company - HA! After listening to story after story of the abuses going on I had to turn off the TV before I threw it into the ocean.... I have had it. I told a friend that we, the tax payers, are lining the pockets with our tax dollars - to the tune of how much? Like $4000 per person and they turn around and offer us an ice cream in exchange - and we just sit back, happy to lick our cone. |

Bush has offered us nothing but the promise that he is making us safer.... HA! He didn't even offer ice cream and yet, they voted him in TWICE. |

Gringa, I am assuming you are making a point that Bush is running Congress now. |

I have no idea how you made that assumption. I never said nor implied that. I am angry with everyone over this bailout - I could rant for hours.... but I won't... because if you can't see what is wrong, I can't help you - it is all wrong on so many levels, the initial bailout, the resistance of bailing out the car makers (not that I am in support of it, but the underlying reasons why I think Bush is opposed to it) ALL OF IT! Bush has his blame in all of this, too. I guess you forget him saying that the initial bailout plan HAD to be approved in 24 hours or the entire economic system would collapse? Do you forget the pressure he laid, the verbiage that was contained in the initial bill? His hands are not clean. |

Oh, I get it! Because your initial post was partisan you assumed mine was, too, RT. It wasn't. We are ALL being sold a bill of goods, we are ALL being offered ice cream from ALL of the politicians. What I believe is that Bush is and has been interested in one thing and one thing only since he began his quest for the White House. IT certainly was not about giving a damn about the American people as a whole. What I believe is that Obama will shift some of those abuses that have taken place back to the American people. If we are going to spend billions, my personal preference is to spend it on our people, give them some well deserved health care, give them some help rather than making it possible for the CEOs of failed companies to take home ANOTHER $1 million dollar Christmas bonus supported by my tax dollars. I am sorry you are ok with that - BUT I AM NOT. If you have read even a portion of anything I have posted you would see that I believe that a totally Democratic controlled government is as bad as a totally Republican government is. Hopefully, in 4 years we can restore some balance. But at this point, does it all really matter anyway? The end of the world as we know it is suppose to end on 12/21/2012 anyway..... <sigh> Edited by Gringa, Nov 14 2008, 10:54 AM.
