Has Anyone Tried the New Winery in Conifer?; New Winery in Conifer

I was sent a link about a new winery which just opened up in Conifer. Has anyone been there or tried any of their wines? I never thought of a winery being in Conifer so I admit this is a bit of a surprise.

Thanks!

I haven't yet, though I've been meaning to. I'm assuming that they import the juices they use.

How is the wine biz in NM going? Anything we should look for to try?

Oh, I thought you knew I was laid off in April - after they thanked me for doubling sales in a market where sales have dropped almost 20%. The company was a total ..... I'd rather not use the word but I saw friends and bosses fired left and right over absolutely nothing. I was warned about it after I used all of my post-divorce savings to move here. Now they have a bunch of minimum wage know-nothings who only take orders. No tastings, no education, nothing.

But I digress.

I'm certain that's why my friend sent me the link to the winery. Admittedly, it looks like it's a very small operation. It appears as though they focus more on sweeter/fruitier wines. Their zinfandel sounds as though it might be very good, though. I love a good zin. That's one of the wines my old winery couldn't make well to save their lives.

Geez RL- that really sucks. One of the biggest shocks (for me) of growing up was learning that doing a job well doesn't always (or even often) lead to success. More often it's who you know. I hope you find something even better soon.

We didn't know, RL. I am so sorry to hear about your job. Any plans to move back to Colorado?

Spoken like someone who has never had to meet a payroll deadline. A job isn't a social program.

I appreciate all of the concern.

I actually started work again immediately and never collected unemployment. The new job essentially means I'm working for myself, which I like, but being straight commission in this economy right now is extremely hard. I'm doing some freelancing on the side but it's only earning me a couple hundred a month, at best. All together, I'm not earning enough to cover expenses.

I want to stay in NM but I also have a friend in Bailey who has seen his earnings drop from $100K to $60K to about $25K, if that - and he's been with the same company for about 25 years. He's having it hard and as I can do this job from Colorado as well I may end up moving into his guest room until things start to pick up again. I also have friends in Albuquerque, whom I love dearly and love the area, who have offered me either their guest room or I could rent a place down there for a fraction of what I'm paying here. Another friend thinks I should move to NYC (not bloody likely). I do like the idea of being in Albuquerque but I'd like to know that more money is coming in and more regularly before I move into another home.

MM, this may be the only time I ever say this but you were absolutely right with your earlier statement. Now that I'm no longer with the company.....

The week that I was in training I had to physically remove someone with the company who had stopped by my hotel to see how I was doing. I thought I might have to scream for help. Yes, I should have thought twice about giving my hotel room # to someone but I honestly assumed his intentions were honorable and that we would spend time in the office area of my suite discussing work and maybe head out for a business dinner later.

A manager had pressured at least 6 of us to "date" (fuck) him in order for us to keep our jobs. HR and another manager blew the whole thing off and kept stating he was such a "company man", in spite of the fact by his own admission he had spent time in prison. Also in spite of the fact he was always drunk and wine from the warehouse, where he worked, was always missing. It took him nearly killing a little boy while driving drunk in a company van in order to finally get fired, which happened immediately after I had been fired.

There are exactly 3 remaining sales reps who haven't lost their jobs. One of the 3 works about 90% of the territory - in spite of the fact that she had no wine experience, sales experience or customer service experience before getting hired. She did, however, go to the right church, which was the same church many of us were repeatedly pressured into attending - one person getting fired after he reported religious harrassment to HR. For a tiny company, the majority of people who do or did work for them attended this church. I was frequently harrassed to share my religious views, was harrassed further when it became obvious that I probably wasn't Christian (I'm not), harrassed even more to attend this church and saw first hand other reps and a driver endure the same thing.

Some of reasons I had avoided this site was because I didn't want to explain how work was going. In some ways, as I doubled sales in spite of the fact that sales overall were down 20% in this area means that work was going quite well. The comapny politics, culture and climate were stressful beyond belief. It is sickening that I spent every last dime I had to move here for this job and this was how they treated people. I ended up with lupus-related pleurisy just after the first of the year, I think entirely due to stress and 7 day work weeks. I had been told by both managers and clients as soon as I moved here that this company hired people to fire them, which I had seen happen a dozen times before it became my turn. On the bright side, 2 of my clients dropped my former company after I had been let go. As I'm still hearing complaints from other clients about shoddy service, I think more may be to follow.

Jeepers, thanks for the rant. It is good to be back.

Also, I really would like to learn about this winery in Conifer. Most wineries in Colorado get their grapes from the western slope but I don't know what percentage of grapes need to be grown in Colorado in order to be considered a "Colorado" wine.

Please don't stay away just because you don't want to talk about the job- we simply won't ask. We desperately need more high quality posters to balance the board.

As far as the winery goes- I know it would be nice to see more Colorado wines on wine lists in restaurants. I'd think there'd be a market for that especially in ski towns where you have a high saturation of tourists. If you do get a gig representing some local wineries let me know. I'd love to find a way to get them into the restaurant of our condo.
