North Korea: 2 US journalists pardoned

By JEAN H. LEE (AP) – 57 minutes ago

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korean leader Kim Jong Il issued a "special pardon" for two American journalists and ordered their release at former U.S. President Bill Clinton's request, North Korean media reported Wednesday.

The move to release of Laura Ling and Euna Lee, sentenced in June to 12 years of hard labor, reflected North Korea's "humanitarian and peaceloving policy," the Korean Central News Agency said in a dispatch from Pyongyang early Wednesday.

Clinton landed in the North Korean capital on Tuesday on a quiet mission to negotiate the freedom of the two women working for former Vice President Al Gore's Current TV media venture. During his visit, he held rare talks with Kim — the reclusive North Korean leader's first meeting with a prominent Western figure since reportedly suffering a stroke a year ago.

The KNCA report said Clinton visit was ending Wednesday but left unclear if he had yet left.

Oh yeah. You've been sitting around on the edge of your seat for over a month chewing your nails off worrying about them  What a joke.

Actually many of us have been extremely worried about them. I was afraid that they had simply been forgotten. I'm delighted that Clinton was able to use his diplomacy to get them released. That's important.

Euna Lee is a friend of a friend and I know a lot of people have been beside themselves with worry. N. Korea is no where I'd wish anyone 12 yrs. of hard labor.

I had no idea you were connected to this story in that way. I was frightened that they would have been doing hard labor for 12 years and am relieved to learn that they never got sent to the labor camps.

I wonder how many times Billyboy hit on them on the way back and if they would ever admit to it  Hey, like scorpion told the frog, "Can't help it. It's what scorpions do".Posted Image

Peripherally only, but knowing others who are distressed and feeling helpless can be upsetting. Journalists put themselves out there every day to bring us vital information. In return they mostly receive abuse and disdain. My sister covered the war in Beirut, the Aquino elections and Tiananmen square. She was often in danger like these two women but felt hers was a vital calling. I admire these men and women. We couldn't have a free nation without them.

Beautifully put. In some parts of the world, being a jouranlist can be a very deadly profession.

I'd love to give the credit for this to Clinton, but I'm pretty sure that all he had to do was show up. This had been pre-negotiated by the Obama team. Good job.
