How would you pronounce this child's name: "Le-a" Leah?? NO Lee - A?? NOPE Lay - a?? NO Lei?? Guess Again. This child attends a school in Detroit, MI. Her mother is irate because everyone is getting her name wrong. It's pronounced "Ledasha." When the Mother was asked about the pronunciation of the name, she said, "the dash don't be silent." SO, if you see something come across your desk like this please remember to pronounce the dash. If they axe you why, tell them the dash don't be silent. Remember this be in affect in Deeeetroit. Any bets an old crackhead on this forum will have something to say in defense of the crackhead mother |

I had a friend of Scottish ancestory who named her son Colquhoun. Back from my singing days, I had learned a bit of Scottish Gaelic and Irish Gaelic so I knew how to pronounce this yet most people couldn't even come close. I'd love to hear you try without looking it up on the Internet. As she's white and Scottish, is her son's name less strange than any of the black names given or are there only certain white names all people, regardless of ancestory, should name their kids? I'm also wondering if you have issues with traditional Jewish, Irish or Scandinavian names or if it's just the black ones that get you up and arms? Honestly, it's the Irish ones which I still have a harder time pronouncing. One of my co-conspirators named Siobhan has taken to spelling her name phonetically in order to keep it from being slaughtered. Enya did the same before she became a well-known singer. Her sister, lead of Clannad, has taken to doing the same. Meanwhile.... a quick check of Snopes shows that the basis of this story is still "undetermined", meaning that while it's been circulating the Internet since at least October of 2008, the story has yet to be verified. As no one has stepped forward and gone on the record to state that they have indeed either named a child in this way or knows someone who has, this seems to be yet another case of racist urban legend. http://www.snopes.com/racial/language/le-a.asp |
