This fighter is not what the Air Force wants or needs right now. It takes 30 hrs of maintenence for every hour of flight time. The techs joke that they have to drive along underneath on training missions to pick up the pieces that fall off. The guys on mission in Afghanistan and Iraq are being shortchanged on equipment because projects like this suck up all the oxygen in the room. We're aren't trashing the ones we have, we just aren't going to add 7 new, unnecessary, useless, expensive new ones to the wing.
What do the pilots think? Is there a fighter anywhere in the world that can even come close to the F22? There is no reason why it has to be this project OR equipment for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Simply cut all of the ridiculous pork in the "stimulous bill" and we could build 20 more.
I haven't spoken with any F-22 pilots. Undoubtably the State Patrol would love to have Maseratis. Personally I'd prefer a fleet of 75 Crown Vics to 7 Maserati's. It's better to buy what you need then what you want. Anyway, the Air Force doesn't want these F-22's. The politicians who are trying to protect jobs in their districts do. I think jobs are important, but I think getting the troops on the ground the equipment they really need is more important.

The State Patrol analogy works for me because this isn't about protecting our country from invaders. If we are out there flying '75 Crown Vics against Chinese Maseratis, we're going to lose. I don't care how many pieces of crap you throw against a superior fighter, the superior fighter is going to win. The F22 is the world's best fighter. I understand that you think that building a few more F22's is tantamount to pulling armour off of the backs of troops fighting our wars, but that is not true. See above post. The Air Force wasn't asked if they wanted these planes, the Pentagon was.

I agree with TM. The US needs the best and most equipped aircraft in the world, without it we are major target. I think our enemies have discovered that there are three ways at attacking America without a war machine: 1) Public Opinion 2) Financial and 3) Low Costs Products

You have to laugh at this. Whatever Obama does will be judged as wrong in the eyes of the Conservatives. Had he supported these planes he would have been condemned as a pork farmer- ignoring the pleas of the Pentagon in preference of his party members. They have the meme down pat, gotta give them that.
