LOL Hey Gringa member the party lines we had for phones?

And really everyone kept to themselves but we had some kick ass times at the Woodside and before Jigger Junction, The Rooster, The Old Rustic Inn and uh,, well,,, should I mention the original Bailey Bar....
But we all knew each other, new the vehicles everyone drove, waved at everyone,
and when someone needed help or something the community was there for them.

John and Tony used to drive cattle down Mt Evans Blvd, and Deer Creek ranch blocked 285 every year moving to winter pasture.

We are now a city with city BullShit and city acting peeps.
Speaking of John, he was on my party-line. You may not believe this but he was on the phone all day long like an old lady, I could rarely use the phone until it was beer o'clock... if he picked up and you were on the phone, the bastard would start punching numbers in your ear until you hung up. I knew it was him 'cause I recognised his voice - so, one day, I yelled STOP THAT JOHNNY OR I AM GONNA COME OVER AND KICK YOUR ASS!!! Hahaha..... he never did it again nor did he ever know it was me!

God, I hated party lines. The only good thing about it was you only had to dial 4 numbers. For years you knew who had been up there forever 'cause you would ask, what your number and if they said 4368 - you knew that they were an oldie.... hahaha

The green chili at the Bailey Bar was really good......

Wow, great discussion!

Seems like it boils down to this:

  • Those who are willing to make an effort to understand the community and fit in with like minded folks, will fit in and be happy.

  • Those who aren't interested in understanding the community or fitting in, but want to change the community to fit with their ideas, will cause frustration for themselves and the rest of the community. They won't be happy.

Mountain living isn't, and shouldn't be, city living with more trees. It requires more self-reliance, planning, and willingness to work at enjoying life,

Whether a person is 'mtn folk' or 'flatlander' isn't really dependent upon where they live (or are from), it depends upon what kind of person they are, IMO.

I guess as a "flatlander" (I've only lived up here full time for about a year) I can say that it's much friendlier up here than it was down in town. People up here seem laid back and easy going- yeah, we don't all have block parties all summer long, but you sure as hell don't see that down in town. My neighbor in Lakewood was pissed that the owner before me built a shed/garage that he didn't like. As soon as I told him that I had no intention of demolishing it (at great expense and no benefit to me) he decided we were worst enemies. He'd let his dog bark all night, throw crap into our yard, park in front of our house, play loud music, yell at my kids- you name it. We couldn't get out of there fast enough. I'll take the mountains any day. No, I don't want a rec center or a Walmart. I bought an old house and I get along fine with my somewhat eccentric neighbors.

Yep, when I first moved here I was on a 4-party partyline... (Hell, I didn't even know party-lines still existed!) About a year later they offered me a private line -- for $75... I needed it to share with my dial-up modem...(which was a long-distance call down to Denver to connect!)

I remember Woodside, (pre-Chinese food), the Red Rooster, Reggie's, and the Bailey Bar... Then the flatlanders started screwing things up...
Gee, I knew Looney Jerk was old...but party lines....doesn't that date her back to the last depression?

Anyway, I heard that it was long distance from the area to Denver up to about 1996 or 1997. I can't imagine what the phone bills were like then.

It wasn't that long ago RT. I remember when most of the businesses in Conifer kept a 697 and an 838 number so no one had to call long distance.

I usually paid 'em with a basket of eggs I'd drop off when I rode my mule to town.

That's funny, rumor has it you paid the phone bill by a shady means of self employment.
