I have often commented on my libertarian leanings RT. In my 20's I was an ardent objectivist. I simply came to the conclusion that as lovely a fairy tale as it was, it was just that- a fairy tale. Just as I never completely rejected every aspect of the conservatism I was raised with, I still cling to a few libertarian ideals. You are helping to strip those away however.
I believe libertarians are fence sitters. They seem to moderate on topics that are sensitive to either side. For instance, a libertarian friend recently told me he was against the war; however, he would be up for a lottery to fund the war. I said, what do you mean by that? He said, "I don't support Bush's war, but I would be up for a lottery to pay for it." His point was that if nobody bought lottery tickets then there would be no war. I don't believe we need to make military decisions based upon a poor man's tax (lottery) system.

Another note, I got a kick reading about the lady in Grand Junction who won lottery this week. She elected to take the $ 4.8 cash option. After taxes, she gets $ 2.4 million. I wonder what's she thinking about being considered rich today.

RT, you should talk to my husband....he won't even buy a lottery ticket if it isn't over 100 million.....something about not wanting to waste his luck on a piddly few million. I, however, would be happy with a million or two.....chump change, but better than nothing

The lottery is a poor man's tax. Studies show that the typical buyer of the lottery tickets are the poor and lower middle class families.

The crazy thing is that when they win they get zapped by the IRS as a rich person. Then all of sudden they went from paying 0 percent in taxes to 50 percent in taxes.

I say, make the lottery interesting, all earning all tax free! If the US government was really smart, they would offer "No Income Tax for Life" Lottery tickets for $ 1. Imagine that, a chance to never pay Federal Income Taxes for the rest of your life.

You would still owe Ritter $ 76,800.

It interesting how the govenment gets away with this shell game....

First, it's a lottery for the "education" or whatever cause. So they collect the money from the people. Second, there is a winner, he/she gets taxed on the earnings, now the government has "new" revenue for other expenses. It's a tireless cycle of a shell game with money.

Any windfall of money gets taxed, no matter where you get it. (unless it is inherited, then if it's lots and lots of money the estate pays the tax) When we sold our rental property it was taxed big time. And of course none of the previous congresses have done away with the Alternative Minimum Tax....so in addition to the huge taxes, everything we made that year got taxed at the highest rate and we had minimal deductions. I am hoping that after healthcare Obama will get around to the tax code that punishes the middle class and rewards the upper classes....the more they own, the more they borrow, the more they can find tax free or low tax investments....the bigger writeoffs they get. The biggest loopholes go to the wealthiest people, who end up paying a far lower percentage of their income than the middle class does

That's why we need a flat tax and get the BS of giving a handout, credit, or write off for special classes. Everyone needs skin in this game.
