I'm not clear on what is going on with the pass- we used to drive over it all the time without car damage. What appears to be happening is a struggle between the residents and CDOT. CDOT wants a big, wide road with shoulders capable of bearing truck traffic. I don't care if it's paved, dirt or a hybrid- you should be able to drive across it without getting a flat or busting an axle. I've been told that CDOT has been unwilling to do even basic repairs over the past few years in order to beat the locals into compliance.

OHHHHHHHHHHH - I get it then. I wasn't aware that CDOT wanted to make it a "super" highway - so to speak - I thought it meant just improving it.

When I worked for the Senior Coalition, an elderly couple lived 3 miles in from Grant on that road and it was just awful and when I had to make my visits with them, it rattled my car so badly that the doggy cage that I had up at the time, completely fell down.

Because of the condition of that road for only 3 miles, we've just not bothered to go any farther.

I would like to see improvements but not to that extent. Thanks for the clarification db.

How about a long-term look? Firstly it will bring a few jobs to the area and Secondly isn't it possible to bring tourists from town up to see the aspen leaves turning in the fall - among other reasons - and maybe spend some money to eat and buy gas from local merchants?

I don't know RT - I'm just trying to see the good side of things. The long term result could be a very good thing for the local economy.
I agree about the a few jobs and some tourists; however, if that was the basis of the expense...what would it take to get an ROI on a $ 92 million dollar investment. At least 5% year over year.... so unless we could collate an increase in sales tax revenue of $ 4 million per year - it's a sinking black hole. Every year there would be maintenance of the road...probably to the turn of at least $ 1 million.

With regards to CDOT strategy - it's typical of a government agency strategy. They make it painful until you surrender with your wallet.

Ok, I see what you're saying RT - I just wasn't aware of the details.

We looked into buying that building that had the restaurant in Grant right there at the intersection and I was thinking that if that road had been better, that location had potential. But we decided against it.

No, CDOT wants another access to I-70. Go slap yourselves, your hysterical. BTW- a check for $100 wouldn't pay for the two broken axles I enjoyed after my last excursion over Guanella. Boreas is an easier drive.
Access to I-70 when? in summer? they got that now. In the winter? why? Who's going to climb that fricklin pass in the winter to just end up in the a blowing blizzard in Jefferson. What a slow simmering crock of crap DB! BTW, a check for $ 100 times X number of times after the repair...would have paid for the repairs. Next they will want to pay Boreas so they have another access to Breck.
What are you talking about? I haven't read the rest of the thread yet, but Guanella comes out at Grant not Jefferson. And it is open all year (or was) my neighbor commuted over it to Georgetown for years and years. We HAVE to have an escape access off of 285 - come on, you really can't be that ignorant.

Hey G Guanella ain't been open all the way for years, since both counties agreed not to do winter maintenace. If there is no snow it's a go but usually you will find the gate closed at the trailhead.
There is a sign right as you turn on the road stating NO WINTER MAINTENANCE
and then a small one saying OPEN or CLOSED.

Well, I don't really see a problem with it closed in the winter, but you really do need another way out especially in fire season. A super highway, no, but the Trumble's (? Is that their name? I can't remember - of Tumbling River Ranch) and others really don't want to see the road improved or at least they didn't when I was around.

I had the PRI listed once years ago with Al. It was a dump then and I am thinking that was 20+years ago. I am sure it has imporved greatly since then
