Pope in Africa reaffirms "no condoms" against AIDS
Tue Mar 17, 2009 3:17pm
By Philip Pullella and David Lewis

YAOUNDE, March 17 (Reuters) - Pope Benedict on Tuesday reaffirmed the Roman Catholic Church's opposition to the use of condoms in the fight against AIDS as he started a visit to Africa, where more than 25 million people have died from the disease in recent decades.

The Pope, who arrived to a tumultuous welcome in the capital of Cameroon, also said the continent's people were suffering disproportionately due to the global challenges of food shortages, financial crises and climate change.

"It (AIDS) cannot be overcome by the distribution of condoms. On the contrary, they increase the problem," he said in response to a question about the Church's widely contested position against the use of condoms.

The disease has killed more than 25 million people since the early 1980s, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa, and some 22.5 million Africans are living with HIV.

His words were some of his most explicit on the use of condoms to stop the spread of AIDS since his election in 2005.

The Church teaches that fidelity within heterosexual marriage, chastity and abstinence are the best ways to stop AIDS. It does not approve condoms but some Church leaders have been calling for allowing their use in rare cases between married heterosexual couples where one partner has the disease.

"The only solution is two-fold: the first is a humanisation of sexuality, a human, spiritual renewal which brings with it a new way of behaving among people and, secondly, a true friendship, especially for those who are suffering, a willingness to make personal sacrifices," he said.

He called for "correct behaviour regarding one's body".

So the question is "should someone with AIDS have sex at all?"

Two people with AIDS could pair up without any repercussions. I wonder how many of the people on the
African continent actually know they have AIDS.

I wonder how many of the people on the African continent actually know they have AIDS.
And that is EXACTLY why there's such a problem. Diagnosis and treatment of the disease aren't always possible, especially in rural areas, of which there are a LOT in Africa. Additionally, it isn't consentual sex that is the real problem with the spread of AIDS in Africa, it's rape that is causing the disease to spread so rampantly. I don't know how to say this without looking like I'm somehow advocating rape (that idea sickens me like I cannot express), but if condoms were made available to even the lowest common denominator, maybe the spread of AIDS would not be such an horrific problem.

I notice that the Pope can condemn the use of condoms, but he hasn't said a single word about rape. Fucking piece of shit, this guy is. Not that this is the first time I've had reason to feel this way. He seems to always make the wrong statement, you know? Like for Christmas, he sent out a message condemning transsexuals. What a nice Christmas message: hate those who are different from you! And the list goes on...

After reading your comments, Y...
I was wondering how this uncompassionate, homophobic, evil, stupid, man (G.W.) could get such “high praise” for his hatred for gays & lesbians?
As well as how President oblama will"CHANGE" this policy, after all the President’s budget must get the money from somewhere, besides just REAL TAXPAYERS…
(BTW, have found anything talking about this program?)

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/feb/15/georgebush.usa
“The $15bn (£7.6bn) President's Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (Pepfar) is in its fifth year and has been hailed as a "revolution" that is transforming healthcare in Africa and has been praised as the most significant aid programme since the end of colonialism.
Bill Clinton's legacy in Africa was the debacle of Somalia and the abandonment of Rwanda's Tutsis to the 1994 genocide. But with Pepfar, Bush's primary contribution will be greatly extending millions of lives even though the programme has been criticised for emphasising abstinence in Aids education and using religious organisations to deliver care.”

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/01/15/frist.bush/index.html
“(CNN) -- A legacy of President George W. Bush will be that he saved 10 million lives around the world.
His critics ignore it, but name another president about whom one can say that with such certainty. It is what historians will say a decade from now looking back. Not bad for a president who leaves office with the lowest approval rating in recent memory.
The bottom line is: George Bush is a healer.”

http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5iyCb3rt14Wy2mhlr0MulMptk-n3Q
“Nearly 9.7 million people affected by HIV/AIDS in PEPFAR countries, including nearly four million orphans and other children, had received "compassionate care" by that date, she said.
"Nearly 240,000 babies have been born HIV-free due to the support of the American people for programs to prevent mothers from passing the virus on to their children," Perino added.
In July 2008, Bush signed legislation tripling PEPFAR funds to 48 billion dollars from 15 billion dollars. The new program drops a requirement for one-third of the anti-AIDS funds to be used to promote sexual abstinence and lifts a ban on HIV-positive foreigners entering the United States

“It is unquestionable that GOP Present George W. Bush has done more to fight AIDS than any president in history, including Democrat Bill Clinton,” Benkof writes. “The people pushing Bush to fight the epidemic at home and abroad are overwhelmingly conservative Christians—the same people we keep hearing gay leaders tar as narrow-minded and bigoted. Well, those bigots deserve far more credit for relieving suffering from HIV in this decade than gay men and lesbians did in the previous two decades combined.”

Woah, woah, woah! Yeah, TP, chill out. I actually totally agree with you on this one. I don't think that GW is exactly egalitarian about his beliefs (ha!), but you're right about the funding he's given to African AIDS research. And he's given a LOT of it. No, what we're talking about is the Pope. And my example was just *one* of many. And, honestly, it's not that it has to deal with *that* specific group that irritates me, it's the idea that instead of coming out and saying, "Merry Christmas, here's a positive message," he said, "It's Christmas, the time to remember to persecute those who don't follow *our* book to the letter."
