Democrats Look to Muzzle Conservative Radio

Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow says she wants hearings on “accountability” in radio, suggesting Democrats are eying a return of the Fairness Doctrine.

During an interview with Stabenow, syndicated radio host Bill Press said conservatives should not be the only voices heard on talk radio and asked the Michigan lawmaker: “So, is it time to bring back the Fairness Doctrine?”

Stabenow responded: “I think it’s absolutely time to pass a standard. Now, whether it’s called the Fairness Standard, whether it’s called something else — I absolutely think it’s time to be bringing accountability to the airwaves.

“Our new president has talked rightly about accountability and transparency, that we all have to step up and be responsible. And I think in this case, there needs to be some accountability and standards put in place.”

Press — former chairman of the California Democratic Party — asked: “Can we count on you to push for some hearings in the Senate this year, to bring these owners in and hold them accountable?”

Stabenow said: “I have already had some discussions with colleagues and, you know, I feel like that’s going to happen.”

Originally instituted in 1949 by the FCC, the Fairness Doctrine required broadcasters using the public airwaves to give equal time to opposing political views. The FCC repealed the measure in 1987.

Since talk radio is overwhelmingly dominated by conservative hosts, and liberal talk radio draws few listeners, the “equal time” provision would likely force many radio stations to pull popular conservative hosts from the air rather than air low-rated liberal hosts.

Michael Calderone of Politico.com, commenting on Stabenow’s remarks, wrote: “Although Obama has been publicly opposed to reinstating the Fairness Doctrine, conservative radio has talked nonstop about the fear of it returning (or perhaps something like it with another name) while there’s a Democrat in the White House and a Democratic majority in Congress.”

Bill Press wrote on his Web site: “I’m not a big fan of bringing back the Fairness Doctrine. But if station owners won’t act on their own to offer a mix of voices on the radio, this Congress and this new administration will find a way to force them to do so. And the sooner, the better.”

Has this stupid bitch ever heard the term, "conflict of interest"? Her husband, Tom Athans, is CEO of failed Air America. Before that was top dog of failed TalkUSA.

These people have no shame. Can't compete in a free market so we will legislate away the competition.

The liberals are walking conflicts of interest....

On April 2, 2008, the Detroit Free Press reported that Athans had been implicated in a prostitution sting.[2]

Thomas Athans, the husband of U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow and cofounder of a liberal talk radio network, told Troy police detectives that he paid a prostitute $150 for sex at a Troy hotel in late February, according to a police report obtained Wednesday by the Free Press under the Freedom of Information Act. Athans, 46, was not arrested or charged, but agreed to fully cooperate with police in their investigation of Internet-based prostitution at hotels in the city, according to the report. Athans was pulled over by police on I-75 minutes after leaving the Residence Inn on Livernois, just east of I-75 and south of Big Beaver, the evening of Feb. 26. He was driving a Cadillac DeVille registered jointly to him and Stabenow at their address in Lansing. He was ticketed for driving on a suspended license. When questioned during the stop, he acknowledged he had been at the hotel with a woman he met on the Internet. On further questioning, he acknowledged he had paid the woman $150 for oral sex.

Spanish stations get higher ratings in major markets...these are small market stations and they still can't pull decent numbers:

In Arbitron's Spring 2008 ratings book, stations carrying a majority AAR programming and in markets reporting every quarter averaged a 1.3 share. The highest rated Air America affiliates were KPOJ in Portland, Oregon (3.7 share), WXXM in Madison, Wisconsin (3.5), and KABQ in Albuquerque, New Mexico (2.6). The lowest rated affiliates were WDTW and WLBY in Detroit, Michigan (unmeasurable), WOIC in Columbia, South Carolina (0.4), WTKG in Grand Rapids, Michigan (0.5), and flagship station WWRL in New York City (0.5).

Just look at the Fall 08 numbers in Portland Market Rank #23....KPOJ was fourth in the market with a 4.3 share and the station with Rush was 5.2 (second place). Interesting is the the Mexican station had a 3.8 share of the marketplace just two spots behind the liberals.

Now to Madison (Market Rank # 98) ... WXXM-FM was sixth with a 4.7 share. The Rush station was number 1 with a 7.1 share . Basically the Rush station had double the audience. The liberal station was beat by an Oldies, AC, Top 40, Classic Rock, and Country.

Albuguerque, Market Rank #69.... KKOB-AM the Rush station was 9.6 Market Share and #1. KABQ was ranked number 23 with a 1.1 share...and was beat by three Mexican stations.

Liberal Talk is a disaster...there is no audience....

Let's take a look at the Denver market....the home of the mighty shouty liberals of the West....

Number #1 Station KOA 6.6 in the Fall 08 book.

The liberal station was #23 KKZN. It got beat by three Mexican stations. Even Sports station beat the snot out of the liberals...however, who has the louded voice in the newspaper, movie, and tv industry? Liberals.... Who has the loudest voice in Colorado politics today? Liberals... Even 630 KHOW beat KKZN...

Why can't they get decent numbers in radio? There is no audience! Liberals are a small class of people with a large voice. That's why newspapers are dying (not enough eyeballs read the paper).

...and because newspapers have dumbed down. More interested in the bottom line than the news. You want to know why liberals don't listen to talk radio? Because we don't need a Sean Hannity to tell us what to think and believe. We can do it on our own.
